Grey Goyet Azalea

The azalea that got there first.

Regular price $49.65

The Grey Goyet Azalea did not arrive at grey by accident and has no interest in explaining how it got here. The glaze reads warmer in morning light and cooler by afternoon — the behavior of a color that knows what it is doing. A ceramic wall flower, 5 inches across, one screw, no water. The semi-double azalea form in this glaze is the piece that makes the most sophisticated rooms look slightly more correct, which is a quality most objects spend their entire existence trying to achieve and few manage without appearing to try.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Grey ceramic wall art for rooms that have already decided what they are

We make the Japan Collection for rooms that have finished deciding what they are -- rooms where the grey on the walls was chosen with a level of intentionality that most people reserve for larger decisions. The Grey Goyet Azalea fits those rooms without requiring them to adjust. It is not asking the wall to meet it halfway.

The grey glaze reads differently across the day. Morning light brings out the warmth in it. By afternoon it has returned to something cooler and more composed. We have found that the rooms where the Grey Goyet Azalea works best are the rooms where the owner was not looking for a statement piece and ended up with one.

The Grey Goyet Azalea has opinions about this.

The Grey Goyet Azalea sounds like a retired French diplomat who has seen things he will not be discussing at dinner. Grey is not a color that azaleas arrive at easily. It takes time, it takes patience, and it takes a complete indifference to what everyone else in the garden is doing. The Goyet has been grey since before grey was a design choice. It did not get here by accident and it is not looking for feedback.

Chive artisan hand-made ceramic flower petal without molds with keyholes for hanging

Ceramic wall flowers in 200+ museums and design institutions worldwide

The Art Institute of Chicago has carried Chive ceramic flowers for a number of years, and the buyers there have noted that the Japan Collection pieces are the ones their visitors return to -- the grey palette in particular, which reads in the context of the museum's permanent collection as precisely as intentional as the work it hangs near. We design the Japan Collection from the Japanese botanical canon -- cherry blossom at peak and just past it, the wisteria, the forms that have been refined in Japanese garden tradition for centuries. Every glaze decision in the collection starts with a question about what the color is actually doing rather than what it looks like it is doing. Designed in Toronto, made by hand since 1999.

How to Hang Ceramic Flowers?

In 60 seconds or less

One discovers these flowers, each bearing a secret: a tiny keyhole nestled in the back, waiting for its destiny. The ritual feels almost predetermined - reaching into that dusty jar of orphaned screws, the ones squirreled away over countless home projects. Those odd bits of metal, collected like precious coins, finally finding their purpose. A quick twist of the drill, and there hangs beauty, supported by hardware whose previous life remains a mystery.

Frequently asked questions

How does a ceramic wall flower hang?

One screw and 90 seconds. That is the complete installation. One small screw into the wall, keyhole slot on the back of the flower, and the Grey Goyet Azalea is up. No special hardware, no anchors, no contractor. The wall you have right now is the correct wall. It will be there when you have forgotten the installation entirely, which happens faster than you would expect for a ceramic flower.

What does an azalea flower mean?

Azalea flower meaning centers on lasting passion, elegance under pressure, and the specific kind of care for someone else that does not require acknowledgment. The azalea has been a symbol in Japanese floral tradition for centuries -- it appears in the art of restraint, in the garden as a considered placement rather than a natural occurrence. The Grey Goyet Azalea carries this meaning in a glaze color that the azalea did not arrive at easily, which we find appropriate for a flower that has historically been associated with things that take time.

Is this a good housewarming gift for a new home?

A housewarming gift for a new home that arrives ready to go on the wall within ninety seconds of opening the box is a gift that respects the fact that the recipient has a great deal of other unpacking to do. The Grey Goyet Azalea ships in a Chive gift box, hangs with one screw, and belongs on a wall that has been considered carefully -- which a new home wall, by definition, has not yet been. It is the first considered decision the wall gets to make.

What room suits grey wall decor?

Living room wall decor in grey tones benefits from the Grey Goyet Azalea's specific quality of changing across the day. Morning light brings out warmth in the grey glaze. By afternoon it returns to something cooler. A living room where the grey has been considered -- on the walls, in the furnishings -- finds the Grey Goyet Azalea extending that consideration to the wall without demanding that it be the centrepiece.

Is the Grey Goyet Azalea aware that grey is not a color most azaleas arrive at willingly?

The Grey Goyet Azalea is not aware of this, because the Grey Goyet Azalea does not track color trends and has not been reading the design press. Grey arrived in the azalea the way it arrives in diplomats and certain kinds of stone -- through time, through exposure to things that are not discussed at dinner, through the specific indifference to what everyone else in the garden is doing that produces, eventually, something that cannot be mistaken for anything other than itself. Other azaleas arrive in pink and magenta and the cheerful reds that make gardeners happy. The Grey Goyet Azalea noted this. It did not change course.

Does a grey ceramic flower work with organic modern decor?

Organic modern decor works from the position that natural forms and considered materials are compatible with contemporary simplicity. The Grey Goyet Azalea fits this framework on both criteria. The azalea form is botanical and specific. The grey glaze is contemporary and restrained. Together they produce something that reads as organic modern without performing it.

Does it come in a gift box?

It does. Every Grey Goyet Azalea ships in a Chive gift box -- no additional wrapping required on your part. The box is designed to arrive intact and to look like something worth opening. We have been shipping ceramic flowers and the packaging has improved considerably since the early days, which we prefer not to discuss in detail.

How long does a ceramic wall flower last?

Indefinitely, with no maintenance required. The Grey Goyet Azalea is ceramic -- the glaze is permanent, the form does not change, and it does not respond to seasons, light levels, watering schedules, or the general passage of time. We have flowers from the early 2000s still on the walls of people who bought them when they moved into apartments they have since left, taken the flower with them, and hung it in the next place. Ceramic does not negotiate with time.
