We don't understand why other companies sell pots without drainage holes to people
We has theories. We don't share them professionally. They inform every design decision Chive has made since 1999 — why most pots have drainage holes, why the saucer ships with the pot, and why the conversation we won't participate in (the one about where the saucer went) doesn't come up. The saucer is with the pot. It's always been with the pot.

Indoor Plant Pot FAQs
What are the best plant pots for indoor plants?
The best indoor plant pots are ceramic, have drainage holes, and fit the plant's current root ball. Ceramic doesn't degrade, doesn't leach chemicals, holds temperature steadily, and is heavy enough to keep the plant stable when it gets large enough to make that matter. Chive pots meet all three criteria across every drainage design in the range.
Do all plant pots need drainage holes?
Yes. Every plant pot used for a living plant that is watered regularly needs a drainage hole. Without drainage, water accumulates at the root zone, the roots rot, and the plant declines in a way that is slow, preventable, and avoidable by selecting a pot with a drainage hole, which every Chive pot has. The only exception is the cachepot, which is designed to hold a grower pot inside it rather than soil directly — the grower pot has the drainage hole, the cachepot catches the drainage and should be emptied after watering.
What are the best gifts for plant lovers?
A ceramic plant pot works as a gift for plant lovers because you don't need to know their plant situation, their interior style, or what they already own. A Chive pot comes in ceramic that doesn't fade and a size range that covers most indoor houseplants. Immediately understood. Immediately useful.
What size plant pot do I need?
The correct pot size is two inches larger in diameter than the plant's current root ball. For a plant in a 3-inch grower pot from the nursery: go to a 5-inch Chive pot. For a plant in a 4-inch grower pot: go to a 6-inch. Going too large too fast causes the excess soil to retain moisture longer than the root system can manage, which increases root rot risk. Going too small means the plant runs out of room for root growth within months. Two inches up is the correct increment, applied at the point when roots appear at the drainage hole or the plant stops taking up water efficiently.
What is the difference between a planter and a pot?
A planter is a broader term that includes any container used for a plant: ceramic, plastic, wood, concrete, hanging, standing, indoor, outdoor. A pot is more specific: typically a ceramic container for a single plant, with a drainage hole, used indoors. In practice the terms are used interchangeably. The distinction that matters is drainage hole versus no drainage hole — which is why every Chive pot in the drainage range has one.
What are the best ceramic plant pots?
Chive pots are glazed in-house and fired so the glaze doesn't chip or fade through years of repotting, washing, and being moved by someone who underestimated the weight. The glaze is mixed in-house. The firing is controlled. The color you see today is the color in five years.
What are the best indoor plants for beginners?
The easiest indoor plants for beginners are pothos, snake plants, ZZ plants, and peace lilies. All four tolerate inconsistent watering without significant complaint. All four grow in indirect light, which is the light condition in most rooms that do not have a south-facing window. All four work well in Chive pots: pothos in the 5-inch Liberte or hanging planter, snake plants in the 5-inch or 6-inch medium and large range, ZZ plants in the 6-inch for their first year of indoor growth, peace lilies in the 4-inch or 5-inch until they reach their mature size and need to move up.
Have you come here for one pot, and if so, how is that going?
Most people who come for one pot leave with more than one pot. This is not a sales strategy. It is simply what happens when the range is fifty-four designs in multiple sizes and glazes and the glazes work together and the sizes stack and the plant you bought last month also needs a pot and the plant you are going to buy next month is already in the back of your mind. Chive does not apologize for this outcome. Chive has been ready for it since 1999. The one pot is a fine place to start.
