How to Plant Foxglove from Seed

When to Plant Seeds

  • Indoors: Start seeds 8-10 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Sow directly in late spring or early fall.

Seed Preparation

  • Foxglove seeds are tiny and do not require stratification.
  • For best germination, mix seeds with fine sand to aid even distribution.

Sowing the Seeds

Direct: Prepare the soil by loosening and removing debris. Lightly scatter seeds over the surface and gently press them into the soil. Keep the area moist until germination occurs. Once seedlings are a few inches tall, thin them to 12-18 inches apart.

Indoors: Use a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix. Scatter seeds on the surface; do not cover, as they require light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 65-70°F (18-21°C). Keep the soil evenly moist but not saturated. Seeds will germinate within 14-21 days.

  1. Once seedlings develop two true leaves, transplant them into individual pots.

Transplanting Outdoors

  1. Harden off seedlings one week before transplanting.
  2. Space plants 12-24 inches apart in a partially shaded area.
  3. Water deeply after transplanting to encourage root establishment.

Pro Tip

Deadhead spent flowers to encourage side blooms, but leave some if you want them to self-seed for the next season.

Bonus: Bees love them, but keep in mind—they’re toxic if ingested!

Getting to know your Foxglove

Foxgloves are fascinating biennials that spend their first year developing foliage before producing their signature blooms in their second year, though some varieties can act as short-lived perennials flowering for several seasons. These stately plants reach impressive heights of 2 to 5 feet, producing dramatic vertical spikes adorned with tubular, bell-shaped flowers that often feature intricate speckled patterns inside. The blooms appear in shades of purple, pink, white, and yellow, creating a spectacular display from late spring to mid-summer that lasts several weeks. These elegant flowers serve as vital nectar sources, particularly for bumblebees, while also attracting other bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden.

  • Attracts important pollinators, including bumblebees and hummingbirds.

3. Medicinal & Toxic Properties:

  • Historically used in medicine for cardiac treatments (source of digitalis compounds).
  • Highly toxic to humans and animals if ingested, requiring careful handling.

4. Cut Flowers & Floral Arrangements:

  • Long-lasting blooms make foxgloves a beautiful addition to floral displays.

  • Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with high organic content.
  • Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0).

Watering:

  • Requires consistent moisture but should not be waterlogged.

Temperature & Climate:

  • Enrich soil with compost or organic matter for healthier plants.
Maintenance

Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.
  • Reduce watering once established, only during extended dry periods.

Deadheading & Pruning:

  • Remove spent flowers to extend blooming and prevent self-seeding.
  • In the second year, allow some flowers to go to seed if naturalizing.
  • Cut back plants in late fall to encourage healthy regrowth in spring.

Disease & Pest Prevention:

  • Foxgloves are generally pest-resistant, but slugs and aphids may be an issue.
  • Avoid overhead watering to prevent powdery mildew and fungal diseases.
