Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus

Regular price $27.15

The ranunculus is our favorite flower. We are aware that we have made more of them than is probably necessary. We have made them in ivory and blush and coral and rust and fir green with the word butterfly in front of it, and every time we finish one we tell ourselves this is the last ranunculus and then we look at the ranunculus and make another ranunculus. The Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus is the most recent evidence of this pattern. We are not expecting the pattern to change.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The ranunculus we told ourselves was the last ranunculus

The ranunculus is our favorite flower and we have made more of them than is strictly necessary. We have made them in ivory and blush and coral and rust and fir green with the word butterfly in front of it. Every time we finish one we tell ourselves this is the last ranunculus and then we look at the ranunculus and make another ranunculus. We are beginning to understand something about ourselves.

The Butterfly Ranunculus is named for the way the petals catch light — translucent at the edges, slightly ruffled, layered in a way that moves without moving. The fir green glaze is the color of a conifer in December when the light is low and everything else has given up. It is the green that holds. The ranunculus on a wall holds in the same way.

Gallery wall ideas that include something three-dimensional

Gallery wall ideas that include ceramic flowers need a piece that holds its position without competing with the other elements. The Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus does this. Fir green is a specific color that reads differently from standard green — it sits alongside art prints and photographs without blending into them. The three-dimensional form creates shadow at the edges, which distinguishes it from flat work on the same wall.

It works as the centrepiece or as a supporting piece. It has never been the wrong choice on a gallery wall. We have tried it in many positions. It has opinions about all of them and those opinions have consistently been correct.

How to Hang Ceramic Flowers?

In 60 seconds or less

One discovers these flowers, each bearing a secret: a tiny keyhole nestled in the back, waiting for its destiny. The ritual feels almost predetermined - reaching into that dusty jar of orphaned screws, the ones squirreled away over countless home projects. Those odd bits of metal, collected like precious coins, finally finding their purpose. A quick twist of the drill, and there hangs beauty, supported by hardware whose previous life remains a mystery.

Frequently asked questions

How do you hang ceramic wall flowers without damaging the wall?

Ceramic wall flowers from Chive hang on a single small screw — the keyhole mount on the back sits over the screw head and the flower holds flat against the surface. The process takes ninety seconds. The hole left by the screw is approximately the size of a thumbtack hole. In a rented space, a small amount of spackling covers the hole completely when you move. The Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus weighs less than 200 grams. No anchors required in most walls. One screw, ninety seconds, done.

What does ranunculus flower meaning tell us about the person who sends one?

Ranunculus flower meaning in the language of flowers centers on radiant charm — it is the flower given to someone you find genuinely impressive. The person who sends a ceramic ranunculus is making the same statement with the additional information that they found a Chive Studio flower, which signals their taste level. The Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus says: I found you something that will outlast the week. The ranunculus has always meant this. The ceramic version means it permanently.

Is this a good retirement gift for a woman who loves gardening?

A retirement gift for a woman who loves gardening needs to acknowledge what the garden means to her — not just the plants, but the satisfaction of something living in the right direction. The Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus is ceramic and does not require the knowledge to keep it alive, which is the gift. It is the garden on the wall, in fir green, without the parts that require good weather and remembering to water. It ships in a Chive gift box. It goes on one screw. The ranunculus retired into ceramic and has never once looked back.

What is boho wall decor and does a ceramic ranunculus count?

Boho wall decor is any object on a wall that communicates a relationship with natural forms, craft materials, and an aesthetic that suggests a person has been paying attention for a long time. A handmade ceramic ranunculus from a Toronto studio making flowers this way since 1999 is precisely that object. The Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus is not mass-produced. The glaze variation on every piece is the result of a firing process that cannot be fully controlled — the same unpredictability that makes a real ranunculus interesting. It counts.

Does the Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus work as bedroom wall decor?

Bedroom wall decor has a different requirement than living room decor — it is seen primarily by the person who lives there, which means it should be something the owner finds genuinely pleasing rather than something that communicates taste to others. Fir green reads as calm and considered rather than demanding. The ruffled petal form is detailed enough to reward close attention. It works at any scale — one flower or several — and does not require the room to do anything different to accommodate it.

Can the Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus be part of a gallery wall?

Gallery wall ideas that include ceramic flowers need a piece that holds its position without competing with the other elements. The Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus does this. Fir green reads differently from standard green, which means it sits alongside art prints and photographs without blending into them. The three-dimensional form creates shadow at the edges, distinguishing it from flat work on the same wall. It works as the centrepiece or as a supporting piece. It has never been the wrong choice on a gallery wall.

Can you mix the English Garden Collection with other Chive collections on the same wall?

Every Chive ceramic flower uses the same keyhole hanging system, which means mixing collections is a matter of color and scale rather than compatibility. The Fir Green Butterfly Ranunculus works with Japan Collection pieces because fir green reads alongside the avocado and peridot tones of Japan. It works with Coastal Collection pieces because fir green is a natural partner for ivory and blue-white. The ranunculus form sits well next to larger, simpler forms. No combination has been wrong. Some have been exceptional.

Is the ranunculus named after anyone in particular?

The ranunculus is named for the Latin word for little frog, which refers to the plant's original habitat near streams and damp ground, and which we consider one of the more successful botanical naming decisions in history on the grounds that the flower and the frog have absolutely nothing in common visually and yet the name has held for several hundred years. The Butterfly Ranunculus is named for the way the petals catch light. Nobody in the studio has been named Butterfly. We considered it. We did not pursue it.
