Croissant Ornament - Medium
There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament
Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.
The Croissant Ornament is hand-blown glass in six shades of brown, curved to a point at either end and shaded along every fold. Brown is the hardest family to mix and the least credited once it works, and the shading here is laid wet on dry so the seams stay legible instead of collapsing into one flat tone. Six browns is more than the subject looks like it needs, and that is precisely the point of the exercise. The finished piece wears its cap at the wider end and hangs nose out, sitting on the branch rather than dangling flat against it. My uncle Tobias reads the whole newspaper in order, including the sections he objects to on principle, and will not discuss a word of it before nine in the morning. Everything at the Royal Ontario Museum carries a number, a date and the name of whoever wrote both down, and there is something steadying about an institution that treats bookkeeping as a form of respect.

The Story Behind This Ornament
Storage Do’s and Don’ts:
(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)
- Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
- Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
- Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.
Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.
Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.
