August Birth Flower - Poppy

August's flower. Worn every November. Made for every wall.

Regular price $30.15

August birth flower ceramic gifts have the poppy to work with — the flower with the most complicated symbolic history of any bloom in the calendar and the most striking profile in a field. Chive made a version in burnt orange. Four inches, designed for a wall rather than a meadow. The burnt orange glaze is the honest version of what a poppy looks like when the glaze tells the truth about the color rather than performing it. Red is technically hard in ceramics. The kiln made a decision. The studio deferred.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

August birthday gift from a studio that understands this flower

The burnt orange poppy is the August flower: a form with international recognition in a glaze that does not arrive in the standard summer birthday palette. The studio designed this knowing what the poppy carries — Remembrance Day in Canada, the field at Passchendaele, the specific weight of a flower that has been worn on lapels for over a century. The ceramic version was made for August birthdays, not for November, but it is aware of November. It hangs with one screw in 90 seconds.

Chive ceramic flowers are stocked in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the High Museum in Atlanta, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and more than 200 galleries and museum shops worldwide. The Birth Flower Collection was designed in Toronto, made by hand since 1999.

August birthday gift ideas for the month everyone forgets is summer

The burnt orange poppy ships in a Chive gift box, arrives ready to hang and is still on the wall at the next August birthday. It is the August birthday gift that does not arrive looking like a leftover July gift repackaged. Brooklyn Botanic Garden stocks it. The recipient does not need to know this, but it is a better credential than the alternative.

Birth flower gifts, designed by hand

Every Birth Flower piece begins as a sketch in our Toronto design studio. Each month's bloom is drawn from botanical tradition — not a generic floral shape, but the specific flower historically tied to that birth month, studied and refined until the ceramic holds its character. Snowdrop for January. Poppy for August. Narcissus for December. Drawn by hand, glazed by hand, made to be kept.

Birth flower gifts work because they're personal in a way most objects aren't — tied to a date, a person, a month that means something specific. A ceramic birth flower is a gift that doesn't expire, doesn't wilt, and doesn't need a vase.

These are pieces made for milestone birthdays, for mothers, for the person who already has everything. Birth flower gifts for grandma, for a best friend, for anyone worth giving something original. Designed by Todd Newgren, Chive Studio founder, over 25 years.

How to Hang Ceramic Flowers?

In 60 seconds or less

One discovers these flowers, each bearing a secret: a tiny keyhole nestled in the back, waiting for its destiny. The ritual feels almost predetermined - reaching into that dusty jar of orphaned screws, the ones squirreled away over countless home projects. Those odd bits of metal, collected like precious coins, finally finding their purpose. A quick twist of the drill, and there hangs beauty, supported by hardware whose previous life remains a mystery.

Frequently asked questions

How does a ceramic wall flower hang?

The burnt orange poppy hangs with a single screw . The keyhole mount on the back sits flush against the wall once placed. The process takes 90 seconds. The screw is not supplied — it is a standard size. For plaster or tile, a small anchor handles it without significant wall impact. After 90 seconds the poppy is on the wall and it stays there, being burnt orange, being August, without any further input required.

What is the August birth flower?

The August birth flower is the poppy — the flower with one of the most recognized silhouettes in the natural world and one of the most layered symbolic histories. Poppies represent sleep, peace, remembrance, and imagination depending on the tradition and the century. Chive's ceramic version is burnt orange, 4 inches, made by hand. It represents August specifically, and the wall it ends up on more generally, and it does not require a poppy field to make this point.

What is a good gift for a neighbor?

A gift for a neighbor is best when it is specific enough to be considered but not so personal it becomes awkward. The burnt orange ceramic poppy — August birth flower, 4 inches, made by hand in Toronto, stocked in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden — is the neighbor gift that acknowledges their birth month rather than a generic appreciation of being nearby. It ships in a gift box, hangs with one screw in 90 seconds, and occupies a wall rather than a counter, which means it does not create a maintenance obligation in the neighbor's kitchen.

What is a good hostess gift?

A hostess gift that will still be visible at the next dinner is the correct hostess gift. The burnt orange ceramic poppy — August birth flower, made by hand in Toronto, stocked in the High Museum in Atlanta — ships in a gift box, hangs with one screw in 90 seconds, and is still on the hostess's wall at the next occasion. Flowers that are cut have been the hostess gift for decades because they are easy. A ceramic poppy is the version that stays, which is either more considerate or a longer commitment, depending on the relationship.

What is a good gift for someone who likes plants?

A gift for someone who likes plants is often another plant, which requires the recipient to have room, light, and the patience to maintain it. The ceramic poppy is the plant gift for the person who has already made the calculation about how many plants they can reasonably keep alive. It hangs on a wall, requires nothing, and is stocked in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's gift shop, which is the botanical sector's acknowledgment that a ceramic flower serves a specific need. Burnt orange, 4 inches, made by hand in Toronto.

What is a good gift for someone who is into boho decor?

Boho decor tends toward warm tones, organic textures, and handmade objects — all of which the burnt orange ceramic poppy provides. made by hand in Toronto, 4 inches, in a glaze that sits between terracotta and amber, it installs in 90 seconds and does not require rearranging the shelf to accommodate it. It hangs on the wall, which keeps it out of the category of objects that compete with the existing decor arrangement. The Indianapolis Museum of Art stocks the Birth Flower Collection. Boho sensibility and museum endorsement turn out to be compatible.

Is the poppy the right August birth flower or is it the gladiolus?

Both poppy and gladiolus appear in birth flower calendars as August flowers, depending on the tradition. Western European calendars tend to feature the poppy as the primary August flower, while some North American systems place the gladiolus there. Chive designed the ceramic poppy for August because the poppy has a more distinct and recognizable silhouette at the scale of a wall flower. The gladiolus is tall and structural in a way that translates differently in ceramic. The burnt orange poppy is Chive's confirmed August birth flower.

What is a good gift for a coworker who is leaving?

A going away gift for a coworker works best when it is portable, specific, and does not require assembly at the destination. The burnt orange ceramic poppy — August birth flower, 4 inches, ships gift-ready in a Chive box, hangs with one screw in 90 seconds — is the leaving gift that arrives at the new location ready to be on whatever wall is available. It does not require the coworker to find a vase, water it, or wonder what the office equivalent of that is. Brooklyn Botanic Garden stocks it. The coworker takes it with them.
