There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

An avocado ornament in hand-blown glass — halved, pit painted on in careful detail, the green shading done entirely by hand over glass shaped in the old method. Loop attached, ready for its branch, and quietly confident about being there. Before it was toast the avocado was just a fruit, which people ate without commentary or cultural significance or anyone writing a column about it in a newspaper. It was a fruit that was also somehow a vegetable that was also somehow a lifestyle, and it has been here for ten thousand years and has survived worse and is not particularly concerned about what happened in the last decade. Buy this for the person who loved avocados before they were a thing. They wanted the recognition longer than they would ever admit, and a glass avocado on the tree is exactly the quiet recognition they have earned. The Royal Ontario Museum curates objects that outlast their moment; the avocado has been doing that since the Cenozoic.

The Story Behind This Ornament

She ordered avocado toast in 2009, four years before anyone would write an article about it, and the waiter looked at her as though she had made a reasonable but unusual request, which she had. The avocado was a fruit in 2009. By 2015 it was a movement. By 2018 it was a generational talking point. She ate it through all of this without comment, because the avocado had not changed and neither had her opinion of it, and the culture's late arrival to her breakfast was something she observed with the mild interest of someone watching a crowd discover a restaurant she had been going to for years. The avocado has been here for ten thousand years. It survived the megafauna. It survived the Columbian Exchange. It survived brunch discourse. We shaped this piece with the pit exposed because the pit is the avocado's most honest feature — the part that reminds you this is a fruit with a plan, a seed the size of a golf ball that intends to become a tree. The green shading is painted by hand. The halved cross-section catches light the way a still life catches attention: quietly, with the confidence of something that knows it will outlast the frame.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

The avocado has outlasted every trend; a ceramic flower survives every season without trying. Chive's ceramic flowers are studio-made stems that never ask for water, never lose color, and never stop being the first thing someone comments on when they walk in. If the avocado belongs to whoever loved it first, the blooms belong to whoever keeps something beautiful without fuss. Same patience.

About Chive Studio

Chive Studio has been building objects that outlast their moment since 2004, when our first ceramic flowers taught us that things which look alive without actually being alive carry a staying power trends cannot touch. The current collection spans ceramic floral stems, garden planters, blown-glass vases, and seed kits in season — and in December, hand-blown ornaments for the month when living rooms turn into galleries. Every ornament is conceived in the studio, shaped by a glassblower over open flame, and finished with paint applied brush by brush. Our belief: a tree should hold at least one item that was loved before it was popular. The avocado has been that item since the Cenozoic.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find a well made avocado ornament?

Chive makes this avocado ornament in genuine hand-blown glass — shop it at chive.com with flat-rate shipping. My coworker ordered one and put it on her desk instead of her tree because she said the avocado belonged where she could see it daily, which is either office decoration or a lifestyle statement and the avocado does not distinguish. Ships fast.

Is the Avocado ornament right for yankee swap?

It is a reliable yankee swap choice because the avocado is the rare food that has its own cultural era — everyone at the table will have an opinion about avocados and the ornament will surface all of them in under a minute. The person who keeps it will be the person who understood first. Swap dynamics favor the prepared.

Is the Avocado ornament a good gift for coworkers?

It makes a great coworker gift because it is funny, it is well crafted, and it says something about paying attention without being sentimental about it. The avocado does not try too hard. It does not need a card. It sits on a tree and waits for the right person to recognize it, which is exactly how the fruit operates in the wild. Nature intended.

Is the Avocado ornament made of real blown glass?

The Avocado ornament is genuine blown glass — shaped from molten material over a flame, with the green shading and pit painted on entirely by hand in the traditional method. The weight in your hand tells you it is real glass, not resin or plastic, and the painted cross-section has a depth that photographs suggest but holding confirms. Real material.

How big is the Avocado ornament on the tree?

The Avocado ornament measures 2.56 inches long, 2.17 inches wide, and 4.53 inches tall — bigger than you might expect for a halved fruit, which gives it presence on the branch and ensures the painted pit is visible from across the room. My mother held it next to an actual avocado and declared the ornament more consistent. She meant it kindly.

How do I safely pack away the Avocado ornament?

Wrap it gently in tissue or fabric and store it in a container with padding, keeping it away from heavier ornaments that could press against the pit detail. Glass survives storage well when treated with basic respect. I keep mine in a small box with a cloth divider. The avocado rests. You retrieve it next December. Simple arrangement.

Do you have more food and drink ornaments like the Avocado?

Chive's food and drink collection includes croissants, donuts, cheeseburgers, champagne, coffee cups, pickles, and a fried egg that looks like it belongs in a still life painted by someone with very strong breakfast opinions indeed. The entire collection treats food as biography rather than decoration. Browse and build your branch.

Is the Avocado ornament packaged ready for gifting?

It is not packaged for gifting — it ships in secure protective transit packaging designed to protect the glass, not to replace your wrapping paper. Plan on a minute with tissue and whatever ribbon is handy. At 4.53 inches tall, it fits a stocking or a small bag neatly. The avocado arrives safe and unhurried. Presentation is your call.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
