There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

Painted in her own floral pattern, headscarf included, the Babushka Ornament renders a classic nesting-doll grandmother for the tree in glossy, hand-finished glass. Our glassblowers shape every piece by hand, painters finish the detail work afterward, and a metal loop goes on last, scaled to stand out without overwhelming a crowded branch. She had opinions, delivered without apology, and a housedress suited to whatever occasion the day happened to present. She made something once from a recipe you have tried repeatedly to recreate, and you understand now the failure was never really about the recipe. This ornament exists for everyone who has been warned they are turning into her, and who has quietly decided to take the warning as the compliment it always was. The Royal Ontario Museum keeps entire wings devoted to objects that outlived the hands that made them; this one is small enough for a tree, and just as stubborn about being remembered.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My grandmother Sofia kept a drawer specifically for things that might someday be useful, and nothing in that drawer was ever thrown away on principle, only relocated to a different drawer with the same purpose. She had a housedress for every mood the day could produce and a specific look for when you hadn't eaten enough, one that carried love and disappointment in equal measure without a single word attached to it. She made things from a recipe that existed only in her hands, never written down, and every attempt anyone has made since to recreate it has landed close but not exact, which we've come to understand was never really about the recipe at all. Drawing this ornament up, our team spent real time on the headscarf pattern alone, because a generic floral read as costume rather than person, and we wanted this to read as someone specific rather than a type. We tested six palettes before one of us said, out loud, that's her, and the argument ended immediately. This one is for everyone who has been told, usually as a gentle warning, that they are turning into their own grandmother, and who has quietly, correctly, decided to take it as the compliment it always was.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Funny Christmas Ornaments

Our Funny collection hangs the household's sense of humor at eye level, one hand-painted glass punchline at a time. She holds her own on this branch, and the Yeti ornament keeps her honest company just beside her.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. She passes that inspection on pattern alone, headscarf and posture both intact under a close look. Her fellow personalities — sharp-tongued, specific, entirely recognizable — wait in our Funny Christmas Ornaments .

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Glass takes over the tree for a single season. The rest of the year, our ceramic flower collection take over the counters and shelves instead, holding their color forever without a drop of water or a single complaint. She'd approve of anything built to last this long without fuss, honestly, and these flowers share her exact brand of quiet, stubborn permanence, sitting right where you left them, entirely unbothered.

About Chive Studio

Since 2004, Chive Studio has operated on the belief that a good design decision doesn't need to defend itself, it only needs to work, and to work honestly at that, without cutting a single corner. Between ceramic flowers, garden pots, vases, and a full spring seed season, the studio rarely sits still for long, but winter belongs entirely to glass, and to the specific people the glass gets modeled after that particular year. We spend real time getting a face or a pattern exactly right, because a generic version reads as costume rather than someone you genuinely recognize, and recognition is the entire point of hanging anything at all on a branch.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a Babushka ornament online?

You can buy the Babushka Ornament directly at chive.com — hand-blown, hand-painted, headscarf and all, and no other retailer carries her. My grandmother Sofia would have distrusted buying anything online, then inspected the result closely, then kept it forever. That was her review process for most of the modern world. It usually ended in grudging approval.

Would the Babushka ornament win a white elephant exchange?

She'd win a white elephant handily — distinctive enough to get stolen at least twice before the night settles. Sofia never played white elephant, on the grounds that giving a gift and then permitting its theft was a moral failure dressed up as a party game. She had a point. She usually did.

Is the Babushka ornament a good hostess gift idea?

She makes an excellent hostess gift because she reads as chosen, not grabbed. Sofia judged every gift she ever received by one metric: whether the giver had thought about her specifically or about the category of grandmothers generally, and she could tell instantly, every time. Everyone in the family learned this the hard way. Exactly once.

Is the Babushka ornament hand painted glass or plastic?

She's hand-painted glass throughout, mouth-blown first, floral pattern applied stroke by stroke — no plastic anywhere. Sofia owned exactly one plastic item, a rain bonnet, and regarded it as a necessary humiliation rather than a possession. She would inspect this glass, tap it once with a fingernail, and approve. The tap was mandatory.

Is the Babushka ornament too heavy for tree branches?

At 1.97 inches across and 4.13 inches tall, she sits comfortably on most branches without reinforcement. Sofia was also compact and also needed no reinforcement, a comparison I make with full confidence that she would have enjoyed it. Give her a sturdy spot anyway. She'd expect that much.

What is the best way to store the Babushka ornament?

Wrap her in tissue, store her upright in a padded box, and keep anything heavy off her. Sofia stored her own ornaments in a biscuit tin with a system nobody else understood and nobody dared reorganize, and every single one survived four decades. The tin outlived several appliances. Her system worked.

Where can I see your full funny ornament collection?

The full funny collection lives at /collections/funny-christmas-ornaments, all the household personalities in glass. Sofia would have walked that aisle slowly, pointed at one ornament, and announced which relative it was — accurately, and without a shred of mercy. It was her favorite genre of commentary. Nobody was exempt, including herself.

Can the Babushka ornament be shipped directly as a gift?

She ships anywhere as a gift, straight to the recipient, no arrangement needed — though not in a presentation gift box, just serious protective packaging. Sofia wrapped every gift in paper she'd saved from gifts given to her, some of it decades old. The wrapping is your job on this one. Use good paper.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
