There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The Breakfast Waffle Ornament is a waffle ornament built as a true square, three and a third inches on both sides, with a grid of wells pressed into the glass and a pat of butter set slightly off center on top. The grid is what makes this one difficult. Irregularity inside a repeating pattern is the only sort of flaw a person can actually count, so every row has to hold its spacing right across the face or the piece goes back to the bench. Round ornaments forgive a great deal. This one forgives nothing, and it hangs flat-faced rather than dangling, which makes it a spacing problem on the tree as well as on the bench. My mother-in-law Constance owns a waffle iron she has used twice and will not be talked into parting with. The Royal Ontario Museum will group objects by their form rather than by what they are, so a grid ends up beside a grid and the arrangement tells you something the labels never would.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My mother-in-law Constance owns a waffle iron she has used twice and will not be talked into parting with. It is not sentiment. She has no memory attached to it and does not claim one. Her position is that she has the space, the thing works, and that getting rid of a functioning object in order to feel lighter is a fashion rather than a principle. She has said this while looking directly at my wife, who had recently got rid of several functioning objects in order to feel lighter. The house is not cluttered. Everything in it is somewhere specific, and if you put a thing back an inch off she will not mention it and she will move it. I find her unanswerable and would not want to live there. A square is the hard shape here. The grid has to hold its spacing straight across the face, because a repeating pattern is the only kind of surface where a person can count the error rather than merely sense it, and one row drifting is the whole piece gone. The butter sits deliberately off center. Constance noticed the butter within about four seconds and asked whether that was on purpose. It was.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Food & Drink Christmas Ornaments

Our Food & Drink collection is a menu of the things people love without apology, rendered in hand-painted glass. This is the square one. The Sushi Platter ornament is the wide one, and between them they cover most of what a round tree is missing.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed.Spacing on a grid is exactly the sort of thing an eye checks without being asked, and it checks from about there. The other Food & Drink ornaments are built to be checked.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Shape decides more than subject here, and it does the same job on the flower bench. Our ceramic flowers are sold as single stems precisely so you can arrange by form: three tall, one wide, whatever the shelf actually needs. Each one is shaped petal by petal in ceramic and fired, so a bunch keeps its silhouette instead of leaning sideways by Thursday. They also never need cutting down, unless you would rather they were shorter.

About Chive Studio

The grid on this waffle draws on a design vocabulary this studio has been building since 2004, one ornament season at a time, and it belongs to the category we grade hardest. We sort designs by whether a flaw on them would be countable or merely visible. A visible flaw is a judgment call and people mostly forgive it. A countable one is arithmetic, and nobody forgives arithmetic. Anything with rows, repeats or a regular pattern therefore gets an extra inspection pass that a curved, irregular subject never sees, and it is the reason square and gridded pieces take longer to reach the catalog than far more elaborate ones. The elaborate designs hide their mistakes in the detail. A grid has nowhere to put them.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a waffle ornament online?

From us, and there are fewer of them about than you would expect for such an obvious subject. The reason is the grid. A repeating pattern has to hold its spacing across the entire face, and most manufacturers dodge the problem by softening it into a vague texture. My mother-in-law Constance counted the rows. They were even.

Would the Breakfast Waffle ornament win a white elephant exchange?

It rarely gets stolen, which in white elephant terms is its own sort of win. Theft goes after the broadly desirable: the bottle, the candle, the thing anybody would take. A waffle is so specific that the room decides within seconds it belongs to whoever opened it, and nobody moves on it. Constance opened one. Nobody moved.

Is the Breakfast Waffle ornament a good gift idea?

Yes, and it works best for someone who owns a piece of equipment they hardly use and will not discuss getting rid of. That is a very large group of people. Constance owns a waffle iron she has used twice, keeps it because it works and she has the space, and regards disposing of functional objects as a fashion. She is unmovable.

What is the Breakfast Waffle ornament made from?

Blown glass with the grid pressed into the form while it is still workable, then hand-painted, with the pat of butter applied separately and set deliberately off center. Pressing the grid rather than painting it is why the wells hold a real shadow. Constance asked why the butter was not centered. Because centered looked wrong. She stopped asking.

What size is the Breakfast Waffle ornament out of the box?

It is a true square at 3.35 inches on both sides, which makes it one of the broader pieces here and the only one where the width and the height are the same number. Hang it with the flat face turned out to the room rather than edge-on, or the grid disappears altogether. Constance turned hers within a minute. It had been edge-on.

How do I keep the Breakfast Waffle ornament safe in storage?

Store it flat with the gridded face up and nothing stacked on top, since the raised edges between the wells are the first thing to chip under pressure. A shallow divided box beats a deep one. Constance stores hers with the other square things, in a box of square things, which she assembled deliberately. It works perfectly.

Do you have more food and drink ornaments like the Breakfast Waffle?

Plenty, and one useful way to sort them is by whether the food needs a utensil. Some of the range is cut, forked and eaten sitting down, and some of it is picked up in one hand. Grouping the cutlery pieces together gives a branch a formality that the handheld ones undo. Constance sorts by this, as she sorts by most things. I find it restful.

Does the Breakfast Waffle ornament ship gift ready?

It ships in protective transit packaging, built to get a flat square of glass through the post without pressure across the face. That is not presentation packaging and you would rewrap it before giving it to anybody. Constance rewrapped hers in paper she had saved, cut precisely to size, with the grain running one way. Of course she did.

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
