Sea urchins have been around for hundreds of millions of years and have spent most of that time being stepped on by surprised swimmers. The Chartreuse Sea Urchin has retired from that line of work. It is a glazed ceramic urchin for the wall, 4.5 inches wide and 3 inches deep, mounted on a single screw. The spines are short, dense and bright yellow-green, a color that sits somewhere between a lime and a highlighter. It needs no water and no tank, and it will not move to a different rock overnight. It stays where it is put.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Keeping Chartreuse Underwater

Chartreuse was the color we were least sure about for the urchin. It sits between yellow and green, and on a form this spiky it risked looking more like a seed pod or a cactus than anything from the ocean. What kept it underwater was the shape: a round body with spines radiating evenly from the center, the same structure every sea urchin shares whatever its color. We kept the spines short and dense so the outline stayed compact, and tested the glaze until it settled bright at the tips and slightly deeper at the base of each point. In person it reads as electric rather than sour, the kind of green that shows up under clear, shallow water when the light is strong. Next to the softer pieces in the collection, it is the one that makes a wall look awake.

Silhouette Carries the Identity

Testing the color that seems wrong for a form, before ruling it out, has been a Chive habit since 2004, because the risky option occasionally turns out to be the right one. Chartreuse on a spined body was one of those cases. The concern was that the color would pull the piece toward the garden, and the answer turned out to be structural rather than chromatic: keep the radial spines regular enough and the form reads as marine whatever the glaze does. That lesson, that silhouette carries identity and color carries mood, shaped how the whole Coral collection was colored, with each glaze chosen for a room rather than for accuracy to the reef.

Spines protect sea urchins from predators, and in many species they also help with movement and wedging into rock crevices. The Chartreuse Sea Urchin keeps the spined outline because without it the form would read as a ball rather than an urchin
