Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

A 47th anniversary gift needs to acknowledge decades most calendars have stopped printing greeting cards for, and the Metallic Frikartii Aster arrives already built for that kind of quiet math. Frikartii is named after a Swiss nurseryman named Frikart, who spent the 1920s deciding the world needed an aster that bloomed longer than any other and then simply made it happen, a piece of ambition that never once made the history books and probably should have. Metallic showed up afterward, doing its level best to sound futuristic and Swiss simultaneously, and somehow succeeding at both. Artisans shape these pieces by hand at Chive Ceramics Studio, one bloom at a time, so the metallic glaze catches differently depending on the angle of the wall it hangs on. It reads as considered rather than ornamental, the kind of gift that doesn't need a card explaining what year it marks. Norfolk Botanical Garden has carried this piece in its shop for years, proof that even a flower named after a modest Swiss ambition eventually finds an audience.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Ceramic wall flowers in 200+ museums and design institutions worldwide

We test-fired the metallic glaze four times before it stopped looking like a poorly welded fender and started looking like something a Swiss engineer would actually sign off on, which felt appropriate given the flower. Frikart bred this aster to outlast every other aster in bloom time, an achievement that, as far as we can tell, earned him exactly one grateful footnote and nothing resembling fame. We've always liked that kind of ambition, the sort that solves a real problem and expects no parade for it. The metallic finish took longer to get right than any other glaze currently in the lineup, partly because metallic finishes on ceramic have an unfortunate tendency to look cheap the moment they catch direct light, and partly because we kept second-guessing whether a flower needed to look industrial at all. It does, as it turns out. The petals hold a cool sheen that shifts from pewter to something closer to gunmetal depending on the hour, and the effect reads considered rather than accidental, which is the only kind of accident worth leaving on a shelf. Nobody in the studio has been to Switzerland. We did, however, spend an unreasonable number of afternoons arguing about whether this particular grey had enough blue in it. It did, eventually.

Minute Ceramic Pot and Saucer

The Japan collection learned its patience from rooms built around one object instead of a crowded shelf — an off-center bloom, an asymmetrical bract, a glaze left looking unfinished. Every piece trades abundance for one flower a room needs. The Metallic Frikartii Aster holds its cool sheen under almost any light, catching pewter tones in the morning and gunmetal by evening. A dramatically larger dahlia anchors the opposite end of the shelf.

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Metallic Frikartii Aster catches light differently depending on where it lands, cooler and more pewter-toned mounted on a shaded wall, warmer and closer to gunmetal laid flat under a reading lamp in the evening. Either surface keeps the sheen intact, since nothing about a fired glaze dulls the way an actual metal finish eventually would with handling.

Chive Ryan white self-watering ceramic planter styled with a variegated monstera on a wooden side table.

The Metallic Frikartii Aster never needs watering, obviously, but plenty of actual plants nearby still do. The Ryan Self Watering Plant Pot handles the living side of the equation with a built-in reservoir that takes the guesswork out of a forgetful week, while the Frikartii handles the side that never wilts regardless. Together they cover both categories of plant ownership on the same shelf.

The Wall Wants More. You Know What to Do — Japan Collection

Chive started in 2004 with a fairly narrow complaint: fresh flowers looked incredible for about four days and then became a small chore nobody had budgeted time for. Ceramic solved the timing problem completely. Every bloom is formed and glazed by hand, one piece at a time, which means the studio has spent two decades getting comfortable with the fact that no two pieces will ever be perfectly identical, and treating that as the entire draw rather than something to correct. Metallic finishes in particular get pulled and inspected individually right off the shelf, since an uneven sheen is the kind of flaw that only becomes visible once the glaze has actually cooled. The studio still tests combinations that look wrong on paper and keeps the ones that survive contact with an actual kiln.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Metallic Frikartii Aster hang on the wall?

How does the Metallic Frikartii Aster hang on the wall? It uses a single keyhole cutout on the back, so it mounts flush with one nail or screw already in your wall. No wire, no bracket, no extra hardware run. The Frikartii goes up in about the time it takes to find a level spot, which is usually the harder part.

What is a good 47th anniversary gift idea?

What is a good 47th anniversary gift idea? A 47th anniversary gift idea works best when it skips the traditional material list entirely, since nobody's tracking gemstones or metals by year forty-seven anyway. The Metallic Frikartii Aster sidesteps the question by simply being a flower that outlasts the actual anniversary by several decades. It doesn't need a theme to justify itself.

Is a ceramic aster a good 47th anniversary gift?

Is a ceramic aster a good 47th anniversary gift? Yes, a ceramic aster works especially well for a year this far past the traditional milestone list, when a couple has generally stopped expecting elaborate gestures. The Metallic Frikartii sits on a wall and asks for nothing further, ever. That's the whole pitch.

Does a aster work as organic modern decor?

Does a aster work as organic modern decor? A ceramic aster fits organic modern decor the moment its metallic glaze is given space to actually catch light against a plain wall. It reads as sculptural rather than floral, which is most of what the style asks for. Nothing about it needs a second opinion.

Does the Metallic Frikartii Aster ship in a gift box?

Does the Metallic Frikartii Aster ship in a gift box? Yes, the Metallic Frikartii Aster ships in a branded gift box, ready to hand over without a stop at the wrapping paper aisle. There's no assembly instructions inside, because there's nothing to assemble. Open it, hang it, done. The color never fades toward anything duller, either.

What is a good ceramic aster gift for friend?

What is a good ceramic aster gift for friend? A ceramic aster makes a genuinely good gift for a friend who has already vetoed another candle and has real opinions about their walls. The Metallic Frikartii fits into most rooms without needing to match anything specific. It's the rare gift that skips the follow-up return trip.

Does a Metallic Frikartii ceramic aster outlast a fresh one?

Does a Metallic Frikartii ceramic aster outlast a fresh one? A fresh aster gives you a little over a week before the petals start dropping their opinions on your table. The Metallic Frikartii version skips that negotiation completely and holds its exact color indefinitely. No compost bin required, ever. The color holds steady no matter how long it sits there.

Is a ceramic aster a good gift for friend?

Is a ceramic aster a good gift for friend? A ceramic aster works well as a gift for a friend precisely because it never turns into their responsibility to keep alive. The Metallic Frikartii asks nothing of them, no watering schedule, no guilt when it sits ignored for a month. Low maintenance, permanently.
