Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

A gift for a daughter in law should thread a needle between thoughtful and safe, and Ceramic Flower Lettuce Purple Medium threads it by simply being strange enough to be memorable. It belongs to the same ruffled-lettuce design family as several other Chive pieces, though this particular run of ten colorways and three sizes rarely produces anything quite this purple or quite this medium. It resembles less a flower than a garnish a very particular chef might add to a plate and refuse to explain. Every piece is still shaped and finished by hand in small batches at the studio, ruffle by uneven ruffle. Hang it with one picture hook and mostly forget it exists; no water, no maintenance, and nothing green to worry about. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts carries this piece alongside genuinely old vintage wall pieces it does not have to be confused with, purple lettuce being difficult to mistake for anything else.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Purple Lettuce, Medium Build

This one comes from the same lettuce-shaped color study as several other pieces in the catalog — one ruffled silhouette, ten colorways, three sizes, an entire spreadsheet's worth of studio time spent asking "but what if it were purple" about a shape that already had strong opinions about being green or teal instead. Purple, medium, turned out to be one of the stranger results of the whole experiment: it reads less like a flower at this point and more like a garnish some very serious chef would place on a plate and then refuse, on principle, to explain to the table. We mean that as a compliment, genuinely. It's memorable in the specific way that "correct" flowers rarely are, and it looks nothing like the thing a well-meaning relative might otherwise send for no particular occasion. It hangs from a single picture hook and requires no further attention once it's up: no soil, no water, no seasonal check-in to see how it's holding up under the circumstances. It's holding up exactly as it did the day it left the studio, still faintly confusing, still purple, still refusing every request to explain itself further, which is frankly the most consistent thing about it in its entire short life.

Part of the Classic Collection

The Classic collection never bothered chasing whatever trend was passing through — a rose that looked correct in 1974 and will look correct in 2074, glazed in colors that refuse to change. Every piece trades novelty for something worth keeping. This purple medium belongs to the identical ten-colorway lettuce study responsible for several of the studio's stranger, more memorable results to date.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. Mounted, Lettuce Purple Medium groups naturally with its ruffled color-study siblings into a wall arrangement that reads as a considered set rather than a mismatched collection. Laid flat, it sits unexpectedly well on a kitchen counter or dining surface, doing a strange, deliberate garnish impression that never actually needs replacing or refrigerating.

Complete the Look

Lettuce Purple Medium already reads like an odd, deliberate garnish, so pairing it near the Joe Metal Pot with Drainage Hole on a kitchen counter or dining surface leans further into that impression instead of fighting it. A small potted herb nearby completes a display that looks intentional rather than like two unrelated objects that simply happened to end up on the same shelf together.

A Color This Shape Doesn't Usually Wear

Since 2004, Chive Ceramics Studio has run its lettuce-shaped color line through more combinations than most studios would attempt twice, spanning a full run of colors and a few different sizes along the way. Purple was one of the later additions to that lineup, added mostly because someone asked "why not" and nobody had a good enough reason to say no. The studio still tests every new colorway against the same standard the very first lettuce shape had to meet: even color, held consistently across every uneven ruffle. Every piece is still shaped and finished by hand in small batches here, checked individually before it ships. Odd results happen occasionally. The studio ships them anyway, on the theory that odd and wrong aren't the same thing.

Frequently asked questions

How does a Ceramic Flower Lettuce Purple Medium hang on the wall?

A Ceramic Flower Lettuce Purple Medium hangs on the wall with a single picture hook, no additional hardware required. The ruffled shape sits close to the surface, so it groups easily with other pieces without casting an odd shadow. It stays exactly where it's placed. No adjusting after the fact.

Is a Lettuce Purple good gift for daughter in law?

A Lettuce Purple makes a good gift for a daughter in law because it's distinctive enough to feel personally chosen rather than generic, without veering into anything too sentimental or presumptuous this early. It's memorable, low-pressure, and asks nothing of her going forward. That balance is genuinely hard to find elsewhere.

Is a Lettuce Purple a good vintage wall decor?

A Lettuce Purple works well as vintage wall decor since the ruffled silhouette echoes the kind of hand-formed ceramics that were common decades ago, well before mass production flattened most of that texture out entirely. It looks appropriately aged in spirit, without actually being fragile or old. Character, without the risk.

Does a Lettuce Purple Medium work as classic home decor?

A Lettuce Purple Medium works as classic home decor because purple this considered doesn't rely on a passing design moment to feel relevant. It reads as a deliberate choice rather than a trend purchase made on impulse. Ten years on, it'll still make sense on the same wall. No refresh required.

Does a Ceramic Flower Lettuce Purple Medium ship in a gift box?

Yes — a Ceramic Flower Lettuce Purple Medium ships in a Chive gift box, ready to give without extra wrapping on your end whatsoever, straight out of the shipping box. The ruffled edges are protected during transit so nothing chips or cracks in the mail. Unbox it, hand it over. That's the whole process.

What is a good gift for a daughter in law?

A good gift for a daughter in law should feel thoughtful without crossing into overly personal territory too soon, and a Lettuce Purple Medium threads that particular needle by simply being distinctive rather than sentimental. It works regardless of how well you actually know her taste yet. A safe, memorable bet.

How long does a lettuce purple medium last versus a fresh one?

A Lettuce Purple Medium lasts indefinitely, while a fresh purple bloom of similar size and ruffle typically wilts within a week under normal indoor conditions, sometimes faster near a heater vent. There's no stem to trim, no water to change, no compost bin waiting at the end. It simply remains this purple. Every day after.

Is a Lettuce Purple Medium truly worth buying, not just decent?

A Lettuce Purple Medium is worth buying, not just decent, because it turned an odd, slightly confusing color experiment into something genuinely memorable rather than merely strange for its own sake. It doesn't look like anything sent by accident or grabbed in a hurry. It looks chosen, deliberately, on purpose.
