Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Akita is a prefecture in northern Japan where the winters are long and the things that survive them have a specific quality. The Oatmeal Akita Dahlia is a ceramic wall flower, 3.5 inches across, one screw, no water — open, structured, a form that has made a decision about how large it wants to be and is completely comfortable with that decision. Oatmeal is the color of something that has been through something and arrived at warmth rather than caution. Akita produces winters that identify what is worth keeping. The dahlia made the list.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The Story Behind This Piece

Dahlias carry more individual petals than almost any flower we build, and the Akita variety in particular packs them into dense, overlapping layers that hide their own structure under bright color if you're not careful. We chose oatmeal specifically because it does the opposite: a neutral glaze catches shadow between each petal layer rather than competing with it, showing the actual construction of the flower instead of flattening it into a single colored mass. Building the layered structure by hand at this small scale meant working from the center outward, adding petal after petal until the form closed in on itself the way the real variety does. The oatmeal glaze pools slightly differently in each fold as it fires, which means every finished piece shows a very slightly different pattern of shadow, something we noticed only after several were finished side by side.

Part of the Japan Collection

The Japan collection learned its patience from rooms built around one object instead of a crowded shelf — an off-center bloom, an asymmetrical bract, a glaze left looking unfinished. Every piece trades abundance for one flower a room needs. The Oatmeal Akita Dahlia packs its densely layered petals into a neutral that shows every fold the brighter dahlias tend to hide. A denser, more neutral dahlia sits well beside it.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Oatmeal Akita Dahlia's densely layered petals show every fold most clearly mounted vertically, where shadow travels down each layer, and read as a single compact rosette laid flat on a shelf. Either way the neutral oatmeal glaze holds the same restrained tone in either position. Shop the full Japan Collection.

Complete the Look

A Minute Ceramic Pot in Green Layers nearby handles the actual drainage a living plant needs, a job this densely layered dahlia was never designed to take on. The green layers give the dahlia's neutral tone something quietly complementary to sit beside. Shop the Minute Ceramic Pot in Green Layers.

About Chive Ceramics Studio

Chive has treated densely petaled flowers, dahlias especially, as structural problems as much as color ones since 2004. A neutral glaze on a form this layered is a specific choice: it reveals the underlying construction rather than hiding it under saturation, which the studio has come to prefer for varieties where the structure itself is the more interesting story. Building a form this dense by hand, petal by petal from the center outward, takes considerably longer than a simpler bloom, and the studio has never found a shortcut that doesn't show in the finished piece. Two decades in, structurally demanding dahlia forms remain some of the slowest pieces in the catalog to produce, and also some of the ones the studio is most particular about getting right.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Oatmeal Akita Dahlia hang on the wall?

The Oatmeal Akita Dahlia hangs on a single screw using the keyhole mount on the back. Screw, wall anchor, and instructions are included. Installation takes about ninety seconds. The mount sits flush against the wall. No visible hardware. It can be repositioned without wall damage

What does a dahlia flower mean?

The dahlia carries meanings of commitment, elegance, and the celebration of diversity -- it was introduced to Europe from Mexico in the eighteenth century and became one of the most extensively cultivated flowers in botanical history. In Japan the dahlia is an autumn flower, associated with dignity and good taste. The Akita variety carries the name of a northern Japanese prefecture known for endurance, which adds its own layer of meaning to the form

Is the Oatmeal Akita Dahlia good organic modern wall decor?

The Oatmeal Akita Dahlia is a strong organic modern wall decor piece. The oatmeal glaze is warm and natural, the dahlia form is botanical and structured, and the combination reads as deliberately chosen rather than decoratively reflexive. For an organic modern interior that favors natural materials, warm neutrals, and botanical forms with structural clarity, the Oatmeal Akita Dahlia provides all three

What room suits the Oatmeal Akita Dahlia?

The Oatmeal Akita Dahlia works well in living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices -- rooms where warm neutral botanical pieces read as grounding. The oatmeal glaze sits well against white, cream, and warm natural-tone walls. The Florence Griswold Museum carries Chive ceramics, which has evaluated botanical art seriously since the early twentieth century

What interior style suits the Oatmeal Akita Dahlia?

The Oatmeal Akita Dahlia suits Japandi, organic modern, and warm-minimalist interiors particularly well. The oatmeal glaze is warm and restrained, the dahlia form is botanical and structured, and the Akita origin gives the piece a quiet cultural grounding. It works in cottagecore interiors where autumn botanicals in warm tones read as part of a larger language

Is the Oatmeal Akita Dahlia a good gift for someone with a warm neutral interior?

The Oatmeal Akita Dahlia is an excellent gift for someone with a warm neutral interior. The oatmeal glaze sits in those rooms without disrupting anything -- it adds a botanical element that reads as if it was always there. The dahlia form is structured and specific. It ships gift-ready in a gift box. For a warm neutral interior that wants one considered botanical piece that does not introduce a new color into the conversation, this is the piece

Does the Oatmeal Akita Dahlia ship gift-ready?

The Oatmeal Akita Dahlia ships in a gift box included with purchase. No additional wrapping needed. Ships to over forty countries. The box is designed to be given directly

Does the Oatmeal Akita Dahlia know that Akita is also a dog?

It knows. The Akita dog breed is from the same northern Japanese prefecture and shares the name. The Florence Griswold Museum, which carries this piece, has not been asked to adjudicate between the flower and the dog. It carries the ceramic flower. The dog has not been submitted
