Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

The hawthorn has been growing in hedgerows for ten thousand years and has developed no opinions about trends in that time, which turns out to be the correct approach. The Oatmeal Hawthorn is a ceramic wall flower, 3.5 inches across, one screw, no water. Oatmeal is the color of rooms that made a decision about warmth and have not revisited it. The hawthorn form arrived at the Japan Collection already finished, which is what ten thousand years in a hedgerow produces. It has no further revisions to offer. It was done before it arrived.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The Story Behind This Piece

This piece shares its five-petaled cluster structure directly with the Blue Brown Hawthorn, built from the same base form but glazed as its quieter counterpart. Oatmeal was never meant to be a bold choice, and that was deliberate: hawthorn blossoms are naturally small and white, closer to this neutral register than to anything saturated, and we wanted at least one version in the pairing that stayed close to how the flower actually grows. Getting oatmeal to look considered rather than simply unfinished on a form this small took more testing than the color's quietness would suggest, since a neutral glaze on a tiny petal cluster can easily read as an undecided color rather than an intentional one. We adjusted the glaze's warmth slightly upward until it stopped looking like a placeholder and started looking like the version of the flower it was always going to be.

Part of the Japan Collection

The Japan collection learned its patience from rooms built around one object instead of a crowded shelf — an off-center bloom, an asymmetrical bract, a glaze left looking unfinished. Every piece trades abundance for one flower a room needs. The Oatmeal Hawthorn keeps the small, five-petaled cluster shape, oatmeal standing in for the flower's usual white. A softer, five-petaled neighbor keeps the pairing balanced.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Oatmeal Hawthorn's small five-petaled clusters group naturally into a fuller gallery wall mounted vertically, and sit just as easily laid flat in a tighter tablescape grouping. Either way the oatmeal glaze stays exactly as quiet as it was designed to be. Shop the full Japan Collection.

Complete the Look

A Large Tika Ceramic Pot nearby covers the actual drainage a living plant needs, something this small hawthorn cluster was never designed to require regardless of how many blooms it carries. Both pieces work at a similarly modest, unfussy scale. Shop the Large Tika Ceramic Pot.

About Chive Ceramics Studio

Chive has kept a genuinely white-leaning flower in most botanical collections since 2004, on the theory that not every piece needs to reach for saturation to earn its place in the range. Getting a neutral glaze to read as a deliberate choice rather than an unfinished one is a specific, recurring challenge, since quiet colors have less room to prove intent than bold ones do. The studio has learned that warmth, even a small adjustment of it, is usually what separates a neutral that looks considered from one that looks accidental. Two decades of small color adjustments like this one is largely invisible in the finished catalog, which is exactly the point of getting it right.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Oatmeal Hawthorn hang on the wall?

The Oatmeal Hawthorn hangs on a single screw using the keyhole mount on the back. Screw, wall anchor, and instructions are included. Installation takes about ninety seconds. The mount sits flush against the wall. No visible hardware. It can be repositioned without wall damage

What does a hawthorn flower symbolize?

The hawthorn carries meanings of hope, protection, and transition -- in Celtic and folk traditions it was planted at the edges of things as both a physical boundary and a protective one, and to cut a hawthorn without cause was considered bad luck in many parts of England well into the twentieth century. In the language of flowers it represents hope and the month of May, when it blooms. Oatmeal is the color of a more settled hope -- not the early spring variety, but the kind that has been confirmed by time

Is the Oatmeal Hawthorn good neutral wall art?

The Oatmeal Hawthorn is among the best neutral wall art pieces in the Japan Collection. The oatmeal glaze is warm and specific -- it is not a generic off-white but a color with depth and grain -- and the hawthorn form is botanical and considered. For rooms that have committed to a warm neutral palette and want a botanical element that does not introduce a competing color, the Oatmeal Hawthorn occupies that space exactly

What room suits the Oatmeal Hawthorn?

The Oatmeal Hawthorn works in almost any room -- the oatmeal glaze is warm enough to read as a considered choice rather than a neutral default, and the hawthorn form is specific enough to be interesting without demanding attention. It sits well against white, cream, warm grey, and natural linen-colored walls. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts carries Chive ceramics, which places this piece in a context that evaluates objects carefully

What style does the Oatmeal Hawthorn suit?

The Oatmeal Hawthorn suits Japandi, Scandinavian, organic modern, and warm-minimalist interiors particularly well. The oatmeal glaze is warm and the hawthorn form is natural and unforced. It works in farmhouse and cottagecore interiors where botanical forms in warm neutrals are part of the visual language

Is the Oatmeal Hawthorn a good housewarming gift?

The Oatmeal Hawthorn works well as a housewarming gift because the oatmeal glaze is warm and neutral enough to sit in any room in a new space without requiring the recipient to have already decided what their walls are doing. It ships in a gift box. For a housewarming gift that goes on the wall on the first day and stays there without ever looking like a decision that needed to be reconsidered, the Oatmeal Hawthorn is that piece

Does the Oatmeal Hawthorn ship gift-ready?

The Oatmeal Hawthorn ships in a gift box included with purchase. No additional wrapping needed. Ships to over forty countries. The box is designed to be given directly

Is the Oatmeal Hawthorn aware that cutting a hawthorn without cause was considered bad luck in England?

It is aware. The ceramic version does not grow and therefore does not need to be cut, which sidesteps the concern entirely. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts carries this piece without incident
