Coreopsis sounds like a medical procedure that your doctor mentions in a tone suggesting you should have been doing something about it earlier. It is not. It is a wildflower that grows along roadsides in North America with the energy of something that has decided the roadside is as good a place as any. The Orange Yellow Coreopsis — 5.25 inches across, ceramic, one screw, no water — is orange yellow, which is the color of something still deciding between two good options and taking its time about it. The wall does not mind waiting.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Coreopsis meaning and what orange yellow does for it

The coreopsis has been growing wild across North American prairies and meadows for longer than most things have been doing anything. It requires almost no maintenance, blooms all summer, and returns every year without being asked. Orange yellow is the color it chose for itself, which means the ceramic version is staying exactly true to the original while improving on the name.

The France Collection uses the coreopsis as its smallest bright accent -- a 3-inch piece in the warmest color in the collection. It works at the corner of a gallery wall arrangement, in a group of three, or as the single warm note in a room that has otherwise committed to neutral.

Frequently asked questions

How do I hang a ceramic wall flower with one screw?

One screw at the desired height, 90 seconds total. The ceramic has a hanging loop on the back for the screw head. At 3 inches, the installation is identical to the larger France Collection pieces -- proportionally scaled but the same process. The hole patches with spackle.

What does coreopsis mean as a flower?

Coreopsis means cheerfulness and always cheerful in the language of flowers. The name comes from the Greek koris (bedbug) and opsis (view or resemblance) -- a reference to the seed shape rather than the flower, which is unfortunate but has not affected the flower's disposition in the slightest. In North American wildflower tradition, coreopsis is associated with the prairie and the kind of cheerful persistence that grows back every spring without asking. Orange yellow expresses all of that at exactly the right volume.

Is this a good coworker leaving gift?

A coworker leaving gift they will actually keep needs to not require maintenance, not be a candle, and not be something that will be in a donation box within six months. The Orange Yellow Coreopsis is 3 inches, handmade ceramic, from a studio in the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium gift shop. It arrives in a Chive gift box, hangs in 90 seconds, and produces a small burst of orange yellow on whatever wall it lands on. It is from a wildflower named after a bedbug. The story alone is worth giving it.

What is a good housewarming gift under fifty dollars?

A housewarming gift under fifty dollars works when it looks more expensive than it is and arrives already looking like a gift. The Orange Yellow Coreopsis is a handmade ceramic wall flower from a 25-year-old Toronto studio, in a France Collection featured in French Vogue, stocked at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. It ships in a Chive gift box. It hangs in 90 seconds. It does not require the new house to have a specific wall color or an available surface.

Is coreopsis actually a medical term?

No. Coreopsis is not a medical term -- it is the genus name for a group of wildflowers in the daisy family, derived from the Greek for 'resembling a bedbug' in reference to the seed shape. It sounds medical because Latin and Greek genus names often do, and because the pattern of the word falls in the same rhythm as words like 'diagnosis' and 'prognosis.' Your doctor has no interest in coreopsis unless they also garden, in which case they are probably growing it in their backyard and are fine.

What room suits orange yellow small wall art?

Orange yellow small wall art suits kitchens, entryways, home offices, and children's rooms -- anywhere that warmth, energy, and a small amount of cheerfulness are all welcome. Orange yellow reads as active rather than serene, which means it works best in rooms where something is happening rather than rooms that are primarily for quiet. At 3 inches, the Coreopsis brings this energy without overwhelming the space.

Does it come in a gift box?

Every Chive piece ships in a gift box at no additional cost. The 3-inch pieces ship in appropriately scaled boxes -- small, considered, looks like a gift rather than an afterthought.

What other France Collection pieces work with orange yellow?

Orange yellow in the France Collection pairs best with the warmer pieces: the Gay Paree Peony at 5 inches provides a larger warm anchor, the Paris Daisy at 4 inches echoes the orange-yellow register at a slightly different tone. Together, these three pieces form the warmest cluster in the France Collection palette. For contrast, the robin's egg blue and milk teal pieces provide the cool note that makes the warm tones read warmer. The Coreopsis is the warmest and most saturated single element in the collection.
