Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

The great star protea resembles, above all other things, a decision that has been made and is now simply radiating the result. Pink sand is the color of the desert at six in the morning, before the day has decided what it wants to be. The Pink Sand Great Star is a ceramic wall flower, 4.5 inches across, one screw, no water. It is the most geometrically decisive object in the Japan Collection. Everyone in the room eventually walks toward it. They are usually not sure why. They do not need to be sure why.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The Story Behind This Piece

This piece carries an unusually high point count for a protea, each radiating point glazed on its own before the whole star gets assembled, rather than glazed as one continuous piece the way a simpler flower would be. That method meant dozens of small components had to line up correctly at assembly, since a single point set at the wrong angle throws off the symmetry of the entire radiating pattern. We built a template specifically to hold each point at a consistent angle during assembly, since doing it by eye produced a noticeably lopsided star more often than a genuinely even one. Pink and sand together came from wanting a form this geometric to still read as organic rather than manufactured, and the two tones settle differently across the many small facets each point creates, avoiding the flat, uniform look a single glaze would have produced.

Part of the Japan Collection

The Japan collection learned its patience from rooms built around one object instead of a crowded shelf — an off-center bloom, an asymmetrical bract, a glaze left looking unfinished. Every piece trades abundance for one flower a room needs. The Pink Sand Great Star radiates an unusually high point count, each one glazed separately before assembly. A many-pointed bloom stands out sharply beside it.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Pink Sand Great Star's radiating points catch light most dramatically mounted vertically, each point casting its own small shadow down the wall, and settle into a dense, star-shaped cluster laid flat on a shelf. Either way the individually glazed points stay exactly aligned to how they were assembled. Shop the full Japan Collection.

Complete the Look

A Triceratops Ceramic Plant Pot nearby covers the actual drainage a living plant needs, something this many-pointed protea was never designed to manage on its own. Both pieces share a confident, sculptural presence that holds up from across a room. Shop the Triceratops Ceramic Plant Pot.

About Chive Ceramics Studio

Chive has assembled its most complex radiating forms from individually finished components since 2004, rather than trying to sculpt the whole shape from one continuous piece of clay. A high point count like this one raises the stakes on that method considerably, since a single misaligned piece is now competing against dozens of correctly placed ones for the eye's attention. The studio built dedicated assembly templates for exactly this kind of piece, a level of tooling that would be unnecessary for a simpler bloom. Two decades of assembling multi-part forms is why a star this intricate can leave the studio looking genuinely symmetrical rather than approximately so.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Pink Sand Great Star hang on the wall?

The Pink Sand Great Star hangs on a single screw using the keyhole mount on the back. The screw, wall anchor, and instructions are all included. Installation takes about ninety seconds. The mount sits flush against the wall once hung, leaving no visible hardware. It can be repositioned without wall damage

What does a protea flower mean?

The Great Star is a variety of protea, and the protea carries a meaning of courage, transformation, and resilience -- it is one of the oldest flowering plants on earth and has outlasted most of what originally grew alongside it. In Japanese botanical tradition the protea is an adopted flower that arrived and was taken more seriously than it was in its country of origin. Pink sand adds the layer of something early and unhurried, before the day has positions

Is the Pink Sand Great Star a good gift for an architecture lover?

The Pink Sand Great Star is an excellent gift for an architecture lover because the great star form is inherently architectural -- it is all geometry, all deliberate structure, all outward movement from a resolved center. The pink sand glaze is warm and unusual. It ships in a gift box to over forty countries. For someone who notices structure and thinks about it, this is a gift that will go on the wall and stay there

What room suits the Pink Sand Great Star?

The Pink Sand Great Star works particularly well in office walls, entryways, and any room that can support a piece with strong geometric presence. The radiating form holds the eye from a distance, which makes it effective on longer walls and in rooms where one strong statement is preferable to several smaller ones. The pink sand glaze sits well against white, off-white, and deep grey walls

What style does the Pink Sand Great Star suit?

The Pink Sand Great Star suits minimalist, organic modern, and Japandi interiors well -- the great star form is geometric and the pink sand glaze is restrained. It also works as a statement piece in more layered interiors where the geometry functions as a point of clarity. the Japan Collection was developed from Japanese botanical principles, so the piece sits naturally in spaces that have thought about negative space and what sits in it

Is the Pink Sand Great Star a good gift for a teacher?

The Pink Sand Great Star works well as a teacher gift because it is specific and unusual -- it is not a generic item and it does not suggest a last-minute decision. The great star form is botanical and architectural. The pink sand glaze is warm and calm. It ships gift-ready in a gift box. For a teacher who will put it on a wall at home rather than in a drawer, this is a gift that will last considerably longer than the school year

Does the Pink Sand Great Star come in a gift box?

The Pink Sand Great Star ships in a gift box that is included with purchase. No additional wrapping required. It ships to over forty countries. The gift box is designed to be presented directly, which removes one decision from the process

Has the Pink Sand Great Star ever been confused with an actual star?

Not by anyone over the age of seven. The name refers to the great star variety of protea, which in turn refers to the radiating form of the flower rather than to celestial objects. This has not been a source of confusion at the Royal Ontario Museum, where it has been on display
