FRANCE COLLECTION
Pink Sand Starbrite Water Lily
The Starbrite water lily that is pink sand and has been the France Collection's most quietly unusual color.
Description
French country decor has a color that falls between blush pink and warm sand — the specific tone of old French linen, of Provence stone walls in morning light before the shadows shift, of the palette that reads as warm without being clearly pink or clearly beige. The Pink Sand Starbrite Water Lily is a handmade ceramic wall flower from the France Collection, kiln-fired in Toronto in a pink sand glaze that sits in exactly that register, shaped in the Starbrite water lily cultivar — the star-shaped open lily form that radiates outward in narrow pointed petals.
The warm neutral of a collection French Vogue chose to feature
Chive continues to interpret the French Vogue appearance as an endorsement. Pink sand in the France Collection palette is the color that works in every room the other France Collection colors also work in — it is compatible with blush, peach, rose pink, and milk teal without requiring any of them. The Starbrite cultivar's radiating star form holds the pink sand glaze differently than a rounded form would — the narrow pointed petals create lines that distribute the color outward from the center, which makes the piece read as more active than a similarly sized rounded form. The Art Institute of Chicago carries the France Collection. French Vogue ran it.
The Art Institute of Chicago carries the France Collection. The Chrysler Museum of Art stocks it. The Ansel Adams Gallery carries it. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show awarded Chive the 5-star booth award — the highest rating given — for 13 consecutive years. Art institutions from Chicago to Norfolk to California have independently decided this collection belongs in their gift shops. Chive has been designing and making ceramic flowers in Toronto since 1999.

How to Hang Ceramic Flowers?
One discovers these flowers, each bearing a secret: a tiny keyhole nestled in the back, waiting for its destiny. The ritual feels almost predetermined - reaching into that dusty jar of orphaned screws, the ones squirreled away over countless home projects. Those odd bits of metal, collected like precious coins, finally finding their purpose. A quick twist of the drill, and there hangs beauty, supported by hardware whose previous life remains a mystery.
