Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Poppy flower meaning covers more territory than almost any other flower — sleep, remembrance, oblivion, roadside weed, bagel topping — which says something about the poppy's approach to staying on brand, which is that it doesn't. Milk teal achieves a color that exists at the exact border between teal and something else, and this piece at Chive Ceramics Studio translates it into ceramic without softening it. The poppy form here is the garden variety's fragile open cup, not Flanders fields — held in ceramic for far longer than the three days a fresh poppy actually cooperates. Year-round display with no water and no vase arrangement — it mounts flat against any wall or rests on a surface and continues being milk teal indefinitely. Artisans shape these pieces by hand at Chive Ceramics Studio, and the milk teal glaze varies slightly across each piece in the way a color this specific has to. The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. carries Chive ceramic wall art in its museum shop.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The Poppy That Stopped Being Fragile

The poppy has a reputation to manage and it manages it poorly and this is why I respect it. It is associated with sleep and death and remembrance and the kind of oblivion that gets romanticized in poetry by people who have not personally experienced oblivion but have strong feelings about it aesthetically. It is also a roadside weed. It is also a bagel topping. The poppy contains multitudes and has never once been asked if this is comfortable.

The milk teal variety achieves something that should be in a legal gray area. Milk teal is not a natural color — it occurs in the dreams of people who work in boutique hotel design and wake up at three in the morning with a certainty about throw pillows. It is teal that has been talked down from something. It is teal in the key of beige. It is teal at a frequency you recognize but have been declining to name for several decades.

Ceramic was the obvious choice — the poppy deserves a surface that cannot be metabolized. The roadside weed and the bagel topping and the object of someone's very serious aesthetic feelings all deserve to be on a wall at the same time. Ceramic makes that available. The milk teal stays exactly as it arrived.

English Garden Curated Collection - Fulham - Chive Ceramics Studio - Chive Ceramics Studio

Part of the English Garden Collection

The English Garden collection borrows its chaos from cottage beds never pruned into submission — rambling roses, over-full peonies, zinnias that stayed uninvited. Every piece trades one fussy bloom for an overgrown afternoon. The Milk Teal Poppy softens the poppy's usual papery fragility into something that holds its shape permanently, teal replacing the expected red.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as part of a gallery wall that grows one piece at a time, or laid flat across an entryway console or shelf as a tablescape that never needs the water changed. The keyhole on the back handles the wall version; the base handles the surface version. Most people start with one flower and end up needing both configurations before they admit it.

Complete the Look

The Mini Mofo in light grey is the specific neutral that milk teal is most comfortable next to — not white, which would make the teal look like it's trying to be something it isn't, but grey, which lets the milk teal be exactly what it is without comment. The Mini Mofo hangs from a single hook, holds a trailing plant or small air plant, and stays out of the way of whatever is happening on the wall behind it.

Teal Where Red Used to Be

Milk teal is the glaze that took longest to develop in the English Garden collection. The challenge is that it sits in a range where the component colors — blue, green, grey — are each pulling in a different direction, and the specific combination that reads as milk teal rather than any of its neighbors requires precision in both the formula and the firing temperature. Chive Ceramics Studio has been developing glazes in this range since 2004, and the milk teal on the poppy is the result of that full run of experience.

The poppy form itself presented the open-cup problem — a form with almost no structural depth, which means the internal layering has to create the read of depth that the shape cannot provide on its own. Forming is entirely by hand at the studio, and milk teal varies slightly across pieces in a way the color requires.

Frequently asked questions

Do ceramic wall flowers need command strips for poppies?

The Milk Teal Poppy hangs with a single standard screw in drywall — no command strips, no adhesives, no mounting hardware beyond what you already own. The keyhole slot on the back fits a standard picture-hanging screw and installation takes approximately ninety seconds once the screw is placed. Command strips work as an alternative on non-drilling walls. Ships with an installation guide card.

What does a poppy mean as a bold decor gift?

Poppy flower meaning covers more territory than almost any other bloom — sleep, remembrance, oblivion, roadside persistence — which says something about the poppy's relationship with staying on brand, which is that it doesn't. The Milk Teal Poppy brings all of this to a wall in a color that lands somewhere between teal and something else entirely. Bold decor. Quietly specific. No interpretation required.

Is a Milk Teal Poppy good maximalist decor for bold rooms?

Maximalist decor works when the objects are specifically chosen rather than accumulated, and the Milk Teal Poppy qualifies — milk teal is a color that required genuine development to achieve, and the poppy form is the one that carries the most associative weight per square inch of any bloom in this collection. Ships gift-ready. No water, no arrangement. Stays on the wall indefinitely.

Does a Milk Teal Poppy work as bathroom wall decor?

Bathroom wall decor benefits from pieces that can handle humidity and don't require care in an environment that already has enough ongoing maintenance — ceramic handles both, and the milk teal on this poppy reads well in the bathroom's typical light range, which runs from the harsh and overhead to the specifically flattering. No maintenance, no removal requirement. Stays correct under all bathroom lighting conditions.

Does a Milk Teal Poppy arrive gift-wrapped and ready to give?

The Milk Teal Poppy ships in protective gift-ready packaging — no vase, no arrangement, no additional preparation on either end. It arrives looking considered regardless of the timeline it was ordered on, which is what a maximalist decor gift should accomplish. Holds the full poppy bloom indefinitely without care on the receiving end. The recipient gets the credit for the wall looking this intentional.

What is a maximalist decor piece with a calming color?

Maximalist decor with a calming color is the specific category that milk teal occupies — it is bold enough to make a statement and muted enough not to escalate one. The Milk Teal Poppy brings the poppy's associative weight — remembrance, depth, a reputation it manages imperfectly — in a glaze that suggests the room has strong opinions delivered quietly. No water. Stays indefinitely.

How long does a Milk Teal Poppy last versus a fresh poppy?

A Milk Teal Poppy in ceramic lasts indefinitely — no vase, no water, no three-day window. A fresh garden poppy gives approximately three to four days in a vase before the petals release, which is a short return on a bloom with this much associative weight, and a milk teal fresh poppy is not available at any price. The ceramic version holds exactly as shaped.

Is a ceramic poppy a good bathroom decor gift idea?

Bathroom wall decor as a gift works when the piece can handle the environment without requiring care — ceramic holds up in bathroom conditions, milk teal reads well under the full range of bathroom lighting, and the poppy form is specific enough to read as chosen rather than filled-in. Ships protected. Arrives ready. Stays on the wall as long as the recipient keeps it.
