Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Mum flower meaning runs deeper than most buyers expect — the chrysanthemum has represented longevity and imperial authority across East Asia for over a thousand years, appearing on seals, in temples, in poetry collections most flowers never come close to. Our Buttercup Yellow Chrysanthemum earned its name in the studio, not the archives, after someone compared the shade to butter left out on the counter too long. The chrysanthemum has survived dynasties; it can survive one employee's opinion about dairy. Ceramic keeps that same staying power literal, with no wilting, no water changes, and no petals dropping onto whatever surface it's mounted above. Group several across a hallway for a display that references centuries of symbolism without anyone needing to read the plaque. Every piece is shaped by hand at Chive Ceramics Studio, glazed to hold its color the way the real flower never could past a week in a vase. Chive pieces are carried by the Monterey Bay Aquarium gift shop, chosen for guests who want something that lasts.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Petals Packed Tighter Than Usual

There's a version of this studio's history where we discover the chrysanthemum's imperial pedigree and treat it with the reverence a thousand-year symbol probably deserves. That is not the version that happened. What happened is somebody held up the buttercup test tile next to a stick of butter left out since breakfast and the two were, structurally, the same color, and from that moment the name was decided by committee vote of one very confident intern. We've made our peace with disrespecting a flower that has outlasted several empires. It seems, frankly, unbothered. What we did take seriously is the shape — the tight, layered petal structure that takes longer to build than most other pieces in this collection, because a chrysanthemum done carelessly just looks like a yellow blob, and we refuse to sell yellow blobs. Each one gets built petal by petal until the layering reads as deliberate rather than accidental, which is the entire difference between a good chrysanthemum and a forgettable one. It goes up fast and stays exactly as bright the day you install it as the day, eventually, you move and take it with you. The dynasty jokes are ours to make. The craftsmanship underneath them is not a joke at all.

Part of the English Garden Collection

The English Garden collection borrows its chaos from cottage beds never pruned into submission — rambling roses, over-full peonies, zinnias that stayed uninvited. Every piece trades one fussy bloom for an overgrown afternoon. The Buttercup Yellow Chrysanthemum packs its petals in tight, overlapping rows that catch light differently depending on the angle of the wall.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as part of a gallery wall that grows one piece at a time, or laid flat across an entryway console or shelf as a tablescape that never needs the water changed. The keyhole on the back handles the wall version; the base handles the surface version. Most people start with one flower and end up needing both configurations before they admit it.

Complete the Look

A chrysanthemum this steady deserves a plant nearby that's equally unbothered, and the Channa Ceramic Planter Pot in the 5-inch size fits that role without competing for attention. It's sized for a real houseplant, not a token succulent, which means it can actually anchor a shelf instead of just decorating one. Set it below or beside the wall piece and the whole grouping starts to look considered rather than assembled in a hurry. Two objects, one clearly intentional wall.

The Yellow That Wouldn't Fade Politely

People assume a studio this focused on flowers must take flowers extremely seriously, and mostly we do, right up until we're naming one after a stick of butter left out too long. That's been the balance since 2004 — genuine craft, not-entirely-genuine reverence. Every chrysanthemum, every rose, every oddly specific ranunculus gets shaped by hand and fired the same careful way it was twenty years ago, because the process hasn't needed fixing. What has changed is scale: a single kiln turned into a studio whose flowers now turn up in shops we never pitched directly, which still catches us slightly off guard. The flowers don't know the difference. They're glazed the same way regardless of where they end up, built to survive far longer than anyone expects a ceramic object to last on a wall that sees actual daily life.

Frequently asked questions

Do ceramic wall flowers need command strips for chrysanthemums?

Ceramic wall flowers, including this Buttercup Yellow Chrysanthemum, skip adhesive strips entirely because the mounting hardware is already built directly into the reinforced ceramic back. A single screw handles the whole job cleanly, without any sticky residue showing up on the wall six months later. Skip the entire hardware aisle and the guesswork that usually comes with it.

What does a mum flower mean as a gift for grandma?

Mum flower meaning centers on longevity and quiet, steady devotion, which happens to describe most grandmothers with fairly uncanny accuracy. It's traditionally the flower people give when they want to say something lasting without turning it into a production or a speech. Grandma will very likely understand exactly what it means the moment she sees it.

Is a Buttercup Chrysanthemum good bathroom wall decor?

A Buttercup Chrysanthemum works genuinely well as bathroom wall decor, since the glaze is fully humidity-resistant, unlike most décor that starts peeling the first week a hot shower gets involved. It holds its full color through steam and condensation without warping, fading, or developing that dull chalky look cheaper materials get. Bathrooms remain one of the most underused walls in most homes.

Does a Buttercup Chrysanthemum work as calm bathroom decor?

Steam and lingering humidity are exactly the conditions this Buttercup Chrysanthemum was engineered to shrug off entirely, making it a genuinely calm choice for a bathroom that could use one confident focal point. There's no mildew risk and no moisture damage to monitor over time. Calm, in this particular case, just means one less thing to think about.

Is a Buttercup Chrysanthemum a good budget-friendly gift for grandma?

A Buttercup Chrysanthemum sits at a genuinely reasonable price point for an object built to last decades instead of days, which quietly changes the math on what counts as budget-friendly here. Compare it to a bouquet grandma would need replaced weekly and the ceramic version wins within a month. It's inexpensive by the only metric that actually matters in this comparison.

What is a lasting gift idea for a flower-loving grandma?

A lasting gift for a flower-loving grandma should skip the vase altogether and go straight to something that doesn't depend on her remembering to keep it alive. This chrysanthemum asks for one screw and genuinely nothing afterward. She gets the flower and the pleasure of it without inheriting a maintenance job disguised as a present.

How long does a Buttercup Chrysanthemum last versus a fresh mum?

A fresh mum lasts a week or two in water at best before the petals start browning at the edges and the whole arrangement starts looking like it's apologizing for existing. This one holds its exact color and full shape for years, with nothing to water, trim, or quietly monitor. A week versus years was never going to be close.

Is a ceramic chrysanthemum a good Mother's Day gift for grandma?

A ceramic chrysanthemum makes a genuinely strong Mother's Day gift for grandma, mostly because it sidesteps the annual repeat-purchase cycle every fresh bouquet quietly locks you into. Buy it once and the gesture is handled permanently, without a yearly reminder notification. Grandma gets the sentiment every single year without you doing the work twice.
