There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The Croc Ornament reproduces the most argued-about shoe of the century in hand-blown glass: the perforated clog, strap swung back in the relaxed position, molded holes dimpled across the top in a grid the paint refuses to apologize for. The body is blown plump and rounded, the color goes on in one bright coat that nobody will mistake for leather, and the gloss is heavy enough that the silhouette announces itself before a guest has fully entered the room. A capped loop rises from the heel, and the shoe hangs toe-down, mid-step. My cousin Fergus owns four pairs, wears them to occasions that specify otherwise, and describes the resulting arguments as seasonal. The ROM has always put the feared things behind glass — spiders, serpents, the odd preserved jaw — so the public can study what unsettles them from a comfortable distance. This shoe now performs the same service for its many opponents, annually, in December.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My cousin Fergus owns four pairs of the shoe this ornament depicts and wears them to occasions that specify otherwise. Weddings, mostly. One funeral, defensibly, since the deceased had introduced him to the shoe. His position, delivered whenever the subject arises and occasionally when it does not, is that comfort is a principle and principles do not observe dress codes, and the family has responded with a decade of seating him near the back of group photographs, an editorial decision he has noticed and does not mind. Fergus considers the arguments part of the shoe. A comfortable object that offended no one, he says, would just be a sock. When the studio decided to blow the clog in glass, Fergus was consulted the way one consults a controversial expert — privately, and with the door closed — and his brief was specific: do not soften it. Keep the holes. Keep the strap in the relaxed position, which he calls sport mode with a straight face. Keep a color no one could describe as apologetic. The finished piece is all of that, glossed to a shine the original never had, and Fergus mailed photographs of it to his critics, unprompted. They responded at length. He counts every response as the ornament working.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Funny Christmas Ornaments

Our Funny collection hangs the household's sense of humor at eye level, one hand-painted glass punchline at a time. Footwear jokes travel in pairs, and the Magenta High Heel ornament supplies this clog's formal counterargument.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. The funny ornaments take their craftsmanship as seriously as any solemn piece in the building. On this clog, every dimpled hole in the grid is placed by hand, completely deadpan.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Comedy and horticulture share one rule: timing is everything, and this studio practices both. Our ceramic flowers play the straight man of the catalog — clay-stemmed, hand-glazed, composed, dignified, permanently in season — and they make every joke around them land harder. A ceramic orchid beside this clog is a double act the mantel did not know it needed. The orchid never breaks character. The clog never stops.

About Chive Studio

Confident as this studio was in 2004, it took years to admit what the flat files eventually proved: the divisive designs outsell the agreeable ones, and more importantly, they outlast them. There is a folder here — unofficial, well-thumbed — of pieces that split the room at the sketch stage, half the bench lobbying for cancellation, and the folder has produced more of our long-running designs than any harmonious meeting ever has. Agreement, we have learned, is often just fatigue. The pieces people argue about are the pieces people remember arguing about, and memory is the entire business of an ornament. The clog went into the folder on day one. It has never left the catalog since.

Frequently asked questions

Do you make a Croc ornament in blown glass?

We do — the Croc ornament is genuine hand-blown glass, made and painted in our studio, holes and all, and sold directly from this page. My cousin Fergus, who owns four pairs of the original and wears them to weddings, reviewed it in his capacity as the family's most committed practitioner. His ruling arrived before the box was fully open. Do not soften it. We had not.

Is the Croc ornament a good secret santa gift?

Yes — a spectacular secret santa gift, particularly for a recipient with strong footwear opinions in either direction. Fergus watched a giver open with an apology, the way people do, and the recipient overruled the apology mid-sentence and hung the clog on the office tree before the meeting resumed. The apology was never completed, or needed. It remains the exchange's best.

Is the Croc ornament a good gift idea?

Yes — it is a great gift idea precisely because everyone already knows where they stand on the shoe. Fergus gives it in both directions: to fellow wearers as a decoration, and to the shoe's loudest critics as a small act of theater. Both groups display it prominently, he reports, for opposite reasons. Either way it gets the best branch.

What material is the Croc ornament made of?

Hand-blown glass, blown plump and rounded, with the strap and the dimpled hole grid painted by hand and the whole shoe glossed to a shine the foam original never managed. Fergus rates the glass version above his wearable pairs on finish and below them on comfort, a trade he calls fair. Nobody has argued with the finish. Nobody has tried it on.

How tall is the Croc christmas tree ornament?

Scaled like the rest of the tree's residents — a clog that fills a cupped hand, hangs toe-down from one standard hook, and reads unmistakably as itself from across the room, which is the only measurement that has ever mattered to this shoe. Fergus calls the scale life-sized in spirit. His critics call it plenty.

How do I keep the Croc ornament safe in storage?

Wrap it in soft tissue, box it rigid, and store it away from temperature extremes — the gloss will keep its shine and the arguments will keep their edge. Fergus stores his in an actual shoebox from one of his four pairs, which he considers the manufacturer-intended solution. The box says sport mode on the side. In marker. His.

Do you have more funny ornaments like the Croc?

We do — the funny collection is full of them, and this clog sorts the room on arrival: the worn-versus-feared axis, Fergus calls it, since every household contains people who wear the shoe and people who fear its spread. He hangs his beside the collection's other provocations and lets guests self-identify. The sorting happens on first sight. The debates are seasonal.

Does the Croc ornament come in a gift box?

No — it does not come in a gift box; it arrives in protective packaging built to move hand-blown glass safely, and the wrapping stays in your jurisdiction. Fergus wraps his gift copies in shoe-store tissue for verisimilitude, complete with a fake size sticker. Recipients fall for the ruse every single year. The reveal is the gift.

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
