There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

A dinosaur ornament asks for a decision most ornaments never face: how to pose something nobody living has ever seen. This one stands upright and confident in hand-blown glass, tail balanced, head high, painted in a green that the fossil record can neither confirm nor deny. The body is blown full and round so the silhouette carries across a room, the eye and the grin arrive last, in the finest strokes of the day, and a capped loop at the spine keeps the whole animal level, mid-stride, clearly going somewhere. My nephew Thaddeus corrected a museum docent at age seven, turned out to be right, and has never once allowed the family to forget the vindication. Every skeleton in the ROM's dinosaur halls is a reconstruction, and every reconstruction is an argument — bones plus a claim about how they stood — revised whenever better evidence walks in. This dinosaur makes its claim in glass, and never has to update it.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My nephew Thaddeus corrected a museum docent at age seven, in front of a tour group, on a matter of species identification, and the docent — to her lasting credit — checked the placard and conceded. The family has litigated the moment ever since, not because Thaddeus was right, which he was, but because he has managed to reference the vindication at every gathering for years without once technically bragging. He calls it the incident. He lets other people supply the details. When we began this dinosaur, Thaddeus appointed himself scientific consultant, unpaid and unstoppable, and delivered opinions on posture that we mostly took, because his central argument was sound: nobody living has seen this animal stand, so the pose is a claim, and a claim should be made with confidence. Hence the lifted head, the balanced tail, the mid-stride set of the legs, an animal going somewhere on purpose. The green he declined to certify, noting only that the fossil record could not rule it out, which he considers the highest available standard of proof. He introduces it to visitors before they have thought to ask, a sequence he engineered. Once they ask, he explains the pose. When they ask about the color, he explains the limits of evidence. Either way, they get the tour.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Animal Christmas Ornaments

Our Animal collection is a census of the creatures who actually run our households, taken in hand-painted glass. Every census needs its improbable entries, and the Purple Poodle ornament files the most flagrant paperwork of all, in violet.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. The animal ornaments get studied harder than most, and this dinosaur openly invites the attention. The grin arrives in strokes fine enough to require the second step closer.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

A dinosaur is a botanist's cautionary tale — an entire world of vanished green, known now only by imprint — which gives our ceramic flowers a certain gallows charm. They are blooms modeled in clay, hand-glazed, and engineered to skip extinction entirely: no wilting, no shedding, no fossil phase. Stand a ceramic fern beside this animal for the full prehistoric tableau. One of them remembers the era personally.

About Chive Studio

You learn certain freedoms slowly in a studio like this one — ours opened in 2004 and is still learning — and the dinosaur teaches the best of them: the extinct need no approval. Paint a robin the wrong red and a birder will write to you. Paint a dinosaur any green you can mix and the only rebuttal is a fossil, and fossils are famously quiet on the subject of color. That freedom is not laziness; it is the rare invitation to decide, rather than to match, and the painters treat it with more care than any field guide would demand. The green on this animal was chosen, defended, and voted on. No committee of the living could overrule it.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes a quality dinosaur ornament in blown glass?

We do — this dinosaur ornament is hand-blown glass, made and painted in our studio and sold directly from this page, posed upright with the confidence the fossil record permits. My nephew Thaddeus, who once corrected a museum docent and won, served as self-appointed consultant on the posture. He has personally certified the stance. The color remains unfalsifiable.

Is the Dino ornament a good secret santa gift?

Yes — an outstanding secret santa gift, with one long-term consequence: it resets the baseline. Thaddeus received his in a office-style family exchange, and the following year every participant privately tried to clear the bar the dinosaur had set. Nobody did. The exchange now has an unspoken era system, before-dino and after. Give it understanding what you start.

Who would love the Dino ornament as a gift?

Anyone who has ever recited facts at a dinner table uninvited — which is to say, give it to the household's resident expert, whatever their age. Thaddeus greets arriving guests with the posture lecture, visual aids included, invitation optional. The dinosaur is the rare gift that comes with its own speaking engagement. Experts understand this instantly.

What material is the Dino ornament made of?

Hand-blown glass, blown full and round so the silhouette carries, then painted by hand: the green built up in coats, the eye and grin set last in fine strokes. Thaddeus inspected the finish against his considerable reference library and found no inaccuracies, largely because none are possible. He calls it the perfect specimen. Peer review is closed.

How big is the Dino ornament on the tree?

Substantial enough to hold a silhouette from across the room, small enough to share a branch peacefully — a presence somewhere between a plum and a legend. Thaddeus insists it reads bigger than it hangs, which he considers the mark of good museum design. It sits level from one standard hook, mid-stride, clearly going somewhere.

How should I store the Dino ornament after christmas?

Wrap it in soft tissue, box it rigid, and store it away from temperature swings — treat it, in short, better than the fossil record treated the original. Thaddeus stores his beside his field guides, filed under reference. Sixty-six million years is the durability standard this animal was raised on. The paint asks nothing of you.

Do you have more animal ornaments like the Dino?

We do — the animal collection runs the full spectrum, and this dinosaur organizes it neatly: the extinct on one side, the still-with-us on the other. Thaddeus hangs his beside the living animals as what he calls a survivorship exhibit, then narrates it to anyone slow enough to be caught. The dinosaur anchors the display. Attendance is mandatory.

Does the Dino ornament come in a gift box?

No — it does not come in a gift box; it arrives in protective packaging designed to move hand-blown glass safely, and the wrapping is your commission. Thaddeus wrapped his own once, for a cousin, in paper covered with the wrong era's animals, purely to see who would notice. Nobody at the party noticed the substitution. He has never recovered.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
