There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

An eggplant ornament is a glass vegetable, blown by mouth and painted by hand, designed to hang on a Christmas tree and say exactly what you think it says, which is either a sincere tribute to Mediterranean cooking or something else entirely, and the ornament is content with both readings. Chive's version stands nearly five inches of deep purple glass, shaped from a molten gather and painted while the surface is still warm enough to bond pigment to silica at the molecular level. The calyx is a separate green element, applied by hand so no two sit at the same angle. A single metallic cap anchors the hanging loop. The stem tapers to an anatomical point because the painters referenced actual aubergines from a market in Kensington, and the aubergine does not simplify itself for decorative purposes. It would hold its own alongside objects in TIFF's lobby cases that take their material seriously and their subject with appropriate humor.

The Story Behind This Ornament

Simone grew eggplant in her backyard for eleven years and spoke about the plants the way other people speak about children who are doing well in school, which is to say with a specific pride that included dimensions. She knew the circumference of her best specimen from the summer of 2019 and would tell you if you asked and sometimes if you did not ask, and the eggplant did not mind the attention because the eggplant was, by any measure, extraordinary. When we gave Simone this ornament she held it at arm's length and rotated it slowly and said the color was right, which from Simone is the highest compliment available, higher than beautiful, higher than interesting, delivered with the quiet authority of someone who has compared a lot of purples in her life and knows which ones are correct. She hung it on the lowest branch of her tree where the kitchen light hits in the morning and said it looked like a vegetable that had earned its place, which is exactly what Simone would say about a vegetable and exactly what she means when she says it about anything. The calyx was particularly good, she noted. The calyx was accurate.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Chive built its reputation on ceramic flowers that look alive without water or sunlight, and the same painters who shape those petals paint the glass ornaments by hand. The eggplant's purple is mixed from the same pigment library as the studio's ceramic lavender. If a vegetable can share a color palette with a flower, it belongs in the same conversation. About Chive Studio

Chive has been making objects by hand since 2004, and the eggplant is the kind of design that reminds the studio why it chose hand-built over factory-line. A machine can produce a thousand identical shapes in an afternoon. A painter studying an actual aubergine on the reference shelf before starting a new batch cannot, and the difference shows in the calyx angle and the taper of the stem. Holiday runs for this ornament are sized to what the painters can finish without rushing, which means smaller batches and a longer wait than the calendar encourages. The studio decided early that the schedule would follow the craft, and that decision has held for two decades because the alternative was a faster eggplant that looked like it had been painted by someone who had never held one.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find a well made eggplant ornament?

Chive's eggplant ornament is a hand-blown glass piece painted to replicate the deep purple skin and green calyx of a real aubergine. Simone found it while shopping for tree ornaments and stopped because the purple was accurate enough to match the specimens in her garden, which she considers the only standard that matters. She bought it before leaving the page. The calyx alone convinced her.

Would the Eggplant ornament make a great secret santa pick?

The Eggplant Ornament makes a strong secret santa pick because the double meaning is immediately understood and immediately funny, and nobody has to explain the joke, which is the best kind of joke for a workplace exchange. Simone says the person who receives it will either laugh or try not to laugh, and both responses confirm the gift was correct. The ambiguity does the work for you.

Is the Eggplant ornament a good gift idea?

This ornament is a good gift for anyone who takes food seriously, grows vegetables, or appreciates an emoji reference they can hang on a tree with a straight face. Simone gave one to her neighbor who grows aubergines in a community plot and the neighbor hung it on the tree the same evening, which Simone took as the highest available endorsement. The purple matched the neighbor's best harvest.

What material is the Eggplant ornament made of?

The Eggplant Ornament is made from hand-blown glass, shaped from a molten gather at the furnace and painted with pigment that bonds to the glass surface while it is still warm. Simone turned hers upside down to inspect the base and said the weight felt correct for solid glass, which is how Simone evaluates most things, by whether they feel like what they claim to be. The glass holds the color permanently.

How tall is the Eggplant christmas tree ornament?

The Eggplant christmas tree ornament stands approximately 4.69 inches tall and measures 1.81 inches across at its widest point. Simone compared it to a small Italian aubergine from her garden and said the proportions were close enough that she approved, which from Simone means the dimensions passed a test she administers without announcing. It hangs comfortably on a standard branch.

How do I keep the Eggplant ornament safe in storage?

Store the Eggplant Ornament in a padded box or wrapped in tissue paper in a cool, dry place away from direct pressure. Simone keeps hers in the original packaging between seasons because the foam insert holds the shape securely and she does not trust improvised solutions when glass is involved. The calyx is the most delicate element. Protect it from side pressure.

Do you have more food and drink ornaments like the Eggplant?

Chive offers a full range of food and drink ornaments that bring the kitchen, the bar, and the garden to the tree in hand-painted glass. Simone has browsed the collection twice and reports that the produce section alone would fill a tree, which she considers a compliment to the catalog and possibly a goal. The eggplant started her collection.

Does the Eggplant ornament come in a gift box?

The Eggplant Ornament does not come in a gift box but ships in protective packaging designed to keep the glass secure during transit. Simone received hers with the calyx intact and the purple unmarked, which she verified before acknowledging the delivery had gone well. The studio wraps each piece individually rather than boxing it for presentation.

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
