Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Gift for foodie lists rarely include flowers, which has always seemed like an oversight to us, since the best foodies notice everything in a room including what's on the wall. The Buttercup Yellow Gay Paree Peony has a name that implies it has been somewhere and come back with better stories than most flowers manage from a windowsill. We've been making ceramic flowers a long time and this is one of the rare pieces we'd genuinely like to sit across from at dinner. Real peonies bloom for a single glorious week before dropping petals across whatever surface they're sitting on, a real problem in a kitchen. Ceramic solves that permanently, holding the same buttercup color and full ruffled form without shedding onto the counter below it. Every petal is shaped by hand at Chive Ceramics Studio, layered until the peony reads as generous as the real thing. Chive pieces are carried by the Chihuly Garden and Glass gift shop, a pairing built on shared appreciation for anything that turns a bloom into an occasion.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

More Ruffle Than Its Cousin

Some flowers in this collection we're proud of the way you're proud of solid, dependable work. This one we actually like — has opinions, clearly gets invited places, gives off the sense of a flower that's had a more interesting week than we have. The name suggested a certain worldliness from the start, and rather than undercut that with a modest, retiring design, we built the peony as full and unapologetically abundant as the name demanded. That meant more petal layers than almost anything else in the English Garden line, each one shaped and set individually before the next goes on, which is slower work than we'd like but the alternative is a peony that looks like it phoned in the effort. Buttercup yellow wasn't the obvious color choice for something with this much personality — we tried three other shades first and none of them had the same casual confidence. This one does. It sits on a kitchen wall the way a good guest sits at a dinner party: comfortable, a little showy, clearly not planning to leave early, and somehow making everyone else at the table seem more interesting just by being nearby. We'd sit with it too, honestly, if that's an option worth considering for a ceramic object.

Part of the English Garden Collection

The English Garden collection borrows its chaos from cottage beds never pruned into submission — rambling roses, over-full peonies, zinnias that stayed uninvited. Every piece trades one fussy bloom for an overgrown afternoon. The Buttercup Yellow Gay Paree Peony carries more ruffled petal layers than its Big Ben cousin, built for a fuller, rounder silhouette.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as part of a gallery wall that grows one piece at a time, or laid flat across an entryway console or shelf as a tablescape that never needs the water changed. The keyhole on the back handles the wall version; the base handles the surface version. Most people start with one flower and end up needing both configurations before they admit it.

Complete the Look

A peony with this much personality deserves a plant nearby that isn't trying to compete with it, and the Large Dojo Porcelain Pot in white does exactly that — clean, quiet, built to hold something real without stealing focus from the wall above it. The included saucer means it works on a counter or table, not just a windowsill. Set a real plant inside and the kitchen gets a second living element instead of one ceramic flower doing all the work.

The Fuller, Rounder Argument

A studio that's been making flowers since 2004 eventually develops opinions about which ones have actual personality, and we have strong ones. Some pieces are dependable and solid, which is its own kind of good. A few, like this one, feel like they walked into the room already knowing people. We shape every piece by hand and glaze it ourselves, in a process that hasn't fundamentally changed since our first year, because a flower that's going to sit on a kitchen wall for a decade needs to survive steam, grease, the occasional dropped pan, and general kitchen chaos without fading. Along the way, a handful of shops with genuinely good taste picked up our work on their own, which we notice and don't take for granted. Two decades of doing this and we're still slightly delighted every time a flower turns out this fun.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Buttercup Gay Paree Peony need special wall hardware?

A Buttercup Gay Paree Peony needs nothing beyond the single wall hook already required by its reinforced ceramic mounting point, no special hardware or wall anchors involved. It hangs flush and level straight out of the box, without any additional tools beyond a screwdriver. The whole setup takes about a minute, start to finish.

What is a thoughtful gift idea for a passionate foodie?

A thoughtful gift idea for a passionate foodie should notice the same details they notice — texture, color, the small things that make a room feel considered rather than default. This peony was built for exactly that kind of attention, hanging somewhere they'll actually see it daily. It's a gift that assumes good taste rather than explaining it.

Is a Buttercup Gay Paree Peony a good 12th anniversary gift?

A Buttercup Gay Paree Peony makes a genuinely strong 12th anniversary gift, since silk traditionally marks that milestone and this piece captures a similarly soft, layered texture in permanent ceramic form. It nods to the tradition without any of silk's actual fragility or upkeep. Twelve years deserves something that won't fray at the edges.

Does a Buttercup Peony work as warm kitchen decor?

This Buttercup Peony works especially well as warm kitchen decor, holding its full buttercup color through steam, grease, and the general daily chaos a working kitchen throws at anything nearby. It won't fade near a stovetop the way fabric or paper decor eventually does. Warm kitchens need decor that can actually handle warmth.

Does a Buttercup Peony ship in a gift box for an anniversary?

Every Buttercup Peony order ships in a genuine gift box suited for handing over directly at an anniversary dinner, with no separate wrapping required beforehand at all. The packaging survives standard transit without shifting or damaging the delicate ruffled petals tucked inside. It arrives ready for the actual occasion exactly as it left the studio that morning.

What is a 12th silk-anniversary gift for a kitchen-loving couple?

A 12th silk-anniversary gift for a kitchen-loving couple should lean into texture rather than literal silk, which doesn't hold up particularly well anywhere near an actual stove. This peony delivers that same soft, layered look in ceramic form instead, built specifically for kitchen use. It's the silk-anniversary spirit without the dry-cleaning bill.

How long does a Buttercup Gay Paree Peony last versus fresh?

A fresh peony blooms gloriously for about a single week before dropping petals across whatever surface happens to be underneath it at the time. This one holds that same full, generous shape indefinitely, with nothing to shed and nothing quietly wilting on the counter below. One week against forever isn't much of a contest.

Is a ceramic peony a good gift idea for foodies?

A ceramic peony makes a genuinely excellent gift idea for foodies, since it rewards the exact kind of close, deliberate attention foodies already give to everything else around them at the table. It's a small detail worth noticing, hung somewhere they'll actually see it daily. Good taste, it turns out, tends to recognize good taste.
