Buttercup Yellow Gay Paree Peony

It has been to Paris. It is not telling anyone what it thought.

Regular price $49.65

Gay Paree is how someone who has very strong feelings about croissants refers to a city they have never visited. The peony has been to Paris. It is not telling anyone what it thought. It came back buttercup yellow and has been on walls ever since with the self-possession of someone who returned from a trip and decided not to explain the trip to people who hadn't taken it. The Gay Paree Peony The peony is already one of the most structurally complicated flowers in the English Garden Collection — hundreds of petals layered into something that looks impossible until you look at it long enough and then it looks inevitable.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The peony that has been to Paris and has opinions about it

Gay Paree is how someone with very strong feelings about croissants refers to a city they have never visited, and the peony named for it has been to Paris, or at least has the energy of something that boarded the train without checking whether there were seats. It is buttercup yellow. It is a peony. It has the layered excess of both.

This is the thing about a peony named Gay Paree in buttercup yellow: it does not need to justify the name. It arrived already correct. We made it ceramic. The trip is permanent. The croissant feelings are the customer's own business.

Grandmillennial decor that has been to Paris at least once

Grandmillennial decor reclaims the maximalism of decorated interiors — rooms that contain objects with history and personality, where traditional forms are not replaced but celebrated. The Buttercup Yellow Gay Paree Peony belongs to this category completely. It is a peony — the grandmillennial flower if there is one — in buttercup yellow, which is warm and specific and the color of rooms that contain many other good things.

It works alongside chinoiserie, floral textiles, framed botanical prints, and the accumulated objects of a room that has been assembled with care over time. It does not try to be grandmillennial. It is a peony named Gay Paree. Grandmillennial rooms recognize it immediately and place it correctly without assistance.

How to Hang Ceramic Flowers?

In 60 seconds or less

One discovers these flowers, each bearing a secret: a tiny keyhole nestled in the back, waiting for its destiny. The ritual feels almost predetermined - reaching into that dusty jar of orphaned screws, the ones squirreled away over countless home projects. Those odd bits of metal, collected like precious coins, finally finding their purpose. A quick twist of the drill, and there hangs beauty, supported by hardware whose previous life remains a mystery.

Frequently asked questions

How do you hang a ceramic wall flower without damaging the wall?

The buttercup yellow Gay Paree Peony hangs with a keyhole slot on the back — one screw into the wall, ceramic flower onto the screw, done. Ninety seconds from box to wall. The screw itself is not included but the confidence that this is the right amount of wall prep for a ceramic flower absolutely is.

What does a peony flower mean?

A 9th anniversary gift for her in ceramic acknowledges that nine years is long enough to have formed actual opinions about what belongs on your walls together. The buttercup yellow Gay Paree Peony is ceramic, hangs in ninety seconds, and doesn't require a vase or a water source. It's been in galleries and museum shops on three continents. It will still be on the wall at twenty years. That's the gift.

What is a good 9th anniversary gift for her?

Peony flower meaning runs deep — in Chinese tradition the peony represents prosperity and honor and has been cultivated for over a thousand years specifically for this. In Western flower language it stands for romance and good fortune and the kind of abundance that isn't performative about itself. Buttercup yellow peonies, specifically, carry warmth without loudness. The Gay Paree has been doing this since before anyone named it after a city.

What is a good thank you gift?

Boho wall decor works best when the colors are warm and the shapes are organic and nothing in the room is trying too hard. The buttercup yellow Gay Paree Peony fits that brief precisely — warm yellow, dense layered petals, ceramic with the surface variation that makes something look individually made in the best possible way. Against macramé, rattan, wicker, warm wood, terracotta — it is exactly where it should be.

What rooms look best with boho wall decor?

A thank you gift needs to be generous without being excessive and interesting without requiring explanation. The buttercup yellow Gay Paree Peony is ceramic from a studio that's been making things since 1999, it hangs with one screw, and it arrives in branded packaging ready to give. It is a complete gesture. It says thank you clearly, warmly, and without a card that says sorry I didn't have time to write more.

Does a buttercup yellow flower work in grandmillennial decor?

Grandmillennial decor is about layering and warmth and the comfortable confidence of someone who decided chintz was never actually out. The buttercup yellow Gay Paree Peony is a natural in that context — a ceramic flower that could have sat in a traditional botanical cabinet for a hundred years but hangs on the wall with a keyhole and a screw in ninety seconds. The aesthetic is old. The hanging system is not.

What makes a good last minute gift for her?

A last minute gift for her that arrives looking intentional is a ceramic wall flower in branded packaging that ships quickly and requires no assembly beyond one screw. The Gay Paree Peony works in every room, reads as a considered choice, and is the kind of gift someone keeps rather than passes along. You had very little time. Nobody needs to know that.

Does the Gay Paree Peony have opinions about people who call Paris Gay Paree?

The Gay Paree Peony has not weighed in on this and we have stopped expecting it to. It came back from wherever it went buttercup yellow, it hangs on walls, and it does not discuss the trip. We respect this. The English Garden Collection has a number of products with strong opinions and a number with quiet dignity. The Gay Paree is in the second group and is perfectly comfortable there.
