How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

One Dense Globe, Organized Complexity

Every collection needs one flower that refuses to share attention gracefully, and in ours that's the hydrangea, full stop, no further discussion required. We built this one intentionally oversized relative to everything else on the wall — more individual blossom clusters packed into the same footprint than any other piece we make — because a modest hydrangea misses the entire point of the flower. Champagne Pink took real trial and error to nail; too warm and it reads as dusty rose, too cool and it loses the champagne entirely and just becomes generic pink. We rejected several glaze batches before the color finally split the difference correctly. The layering process is genuinely time-consuming, each small cluster built and attached individually rather than molded as one solid mass, because a hydrangea that isn't visibly made of many small blooms just isn't a hydrangea. It's a blob with delusions. What's currently on the wall earns its footprint the same way the real flower always has, spreading wider than a modest arrangement would ever allow and making everything nearby look slightly better by comparison, doing all of it without apologizing once for the amount of attention it's clearly expecting to receive from whoever walks past.

Twenty years into this, we've settled into a specific belief at Chive Ceramics Studio: a flower this good deserves more than a week in a vase before someone throws it out. That belief has shaped everything since 2004 — every piece shaped by hand, glazed and tested in-house, built for actual walls in actual sunlight rather than a studio photo. Households with pets, forgotten watering schedules, general chaos — that's the real test, not a controlled shoot. Recognition has come along the way from gift shops with genuinely excellent taste, which continues to be a small, pleasant surprise each time it happens. We haven't changed the process much since our first year, mostly because hand-building every petal still produces the fullest bloom we know how to make, indefinitely, without asking anyone to keep it alive.
