Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

A Rose Warmed Past Its Usual Register

Four roses, four colors, one original, and this is it — the first version of a design we've since repeated in three other shades without ever quite matching the specific confidence of the first attempt. There's a looseness to how the petals fold on this particular piece that we've tried and mostly failed to replicate exactly in the later colors, something about how the clay behaved differently on the earliest test batches that later production never fully recaptured. We've stopped trying to force an exact match and started treating it as a feature instead — this one has a texture the others don't, a small tell that gives away which rose came first if you know to look for it. The soft, understated pink was never meant to be the showy choice among the four, and that turned out to be exactly right; it's the rose people keep circling back to precisely because it isn't performing for anyone. Everything about it feels unhurried and a little assured, the way people get once they've stopped needing to prove they were first. She doesn't bring it up. She's never had to. The other three roses know exactly which one started this, whether or not they're willing to say so out loud at dinner.

We made exactly one rose when Chive Ceramics Studio opened in 2004, in exactly one color, because we figured the world needed at least one flower that didn't quietly vanish a week after being given. Twenty years on, that single rose became four, each one still shaped entirely by hand and tested in-house against real walls instead of a single flattering photograph.
