Jade Green English Rose

The English rose is a class developed by David Austin, characterized by a full, cupped or quartered arrangement of many petals in a rosette form. In the English Garden Collection there are two English rose forms — the Ivory English Rose and the Jade Green English Rose. Both are the same cultivar form in different glazes. The jade green version takes the classic English rose structure and applies a color that the cultivar does not come in naturally, which is the consistent Chive approach to botanical ceramic design.

The English rose form is fuller and more layered than the standard rose — more petals, more cupping, the specific rosette arrangement David Austin roses are known for. The standard rose forms in the collection have the classic spiral petal arrangement. The English roses have the quartered or rosette arrangement. Both are kiln-fired in Toronto. The difference is the kind that people who have been coming to the Chelsea stand for a decade specifically look for.

Jade green is one of the most versatile colors in the collection — it works with warm whites, cool greys, warm terracottas, and the blues and other greens without competing with any of them. On a wall of mixed colors from the collection it reads as the grounding element. On a wall alone it is the deliberate botanical decision. The Art Gallery of Ontario carries it. The Jade Green English Rose was designed at Chive Studio on Queen Street West in Toronto, approximately three hundred metres from the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Toronto International Film Festival. Whether the ceramic rose finds this geographic proximity meaningful or considers it a coincidence of urban planning is not something we have determined. What we can confirm is that all three institutions have independently decided to carry the collection, and that the studio and the institutions have been neighbors for the entire 25 years the studio has been making ceramic flowers.
