Jade Green English Rose

The centuries of symbolism did not survive the color choice.

Regular price $34.65

The English rose has been a symbol of something for so long that the something has changed four times without anyone notifying the rose. We made it jade green. The centuries of accumulated symbolism did not survive the color. The rose survived the color completely and looked better and has not commented on any of this, which we find either very healthy or very English and are not sure those are different things. The Jade Green English Rose Jade green is the green of the stone — warm, slightly translucent in quality, with depth that reads differently up close than from across the room.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The English rose that read its mythology and made a decision

The English rose has been a symbol of something for so long that the something has changed four times without anyone notifying the rose. We made it jade green. The rose has not objected. The rose has, if anything, seemed relieved.

This is the thing about jade green on an English rose: it is the color of a rose that has read its own mythology and made a considered decision about it. The jade green English Rose arrived in this color and has not changed its position. We made it ceramic. The decision is final. The mythology is the mythology's own problem.

Eclectic home decor for a rose that changed its mind

Eclectic home decor is the accumulation of objects that each have a point of view and have agreed to share a room. The Jade Green English Rose has a very clear point of view. It is an English rose — the most traditionally symbolic flower in this collection — in jade green, which is the color of a rose that has read its own mythology and made a considered decision about it. In an eclectic room this registers immediately as the correct kind of object.

It works alongside mid-century pieces, vintage finds, art prints, plants, and the other independently chosen objects of an eclectic interior. It does not compete. It contributes. It is the object that eclectic rooms were built to contain — something with a history and a position and no interest in explaining either.

How to Hang Ceramic Flowers?

In 60 seconds or less

One discovers these flowers, each bearing a secret: a tiny keyhole nestled in the back, waiting for its destiny. The ritual feels almost predetermined - reaching into that dusty jar of orphaned screws, the ones squirreled away over countless home projects. Those odd bits of metal, collected like precious coins, finally finding their purpose. A quick twist of the drill, and there hangs beauty, supported by hardware whose previous life remains a mystery.

Frequently asked questions

How do I hang a ceramic wall flower using command strips or screws?

The jade green English Rose has a keyhole slot on the back and hangs with one screw — the whole installation is ninety seconds. For a sunroom or a wall where you'd prefer not to put a screw directly into the surface, a small finish nail works identically. The keyhole accommodates both. The screw or nail you provide. The ceramic rose was already made.

What does a rose mean?

A gift for a sister is one of the gifts where you actually know the person and the gift should reflect that. The jade green English Rose is ceramic, from a studio in Toronto whose flowers are in museum shops internationally, and it is the color that will work in the specific room you are picturing when you think about where she would put it. You know her walls. This is the gift for them.

What is a good gift for a sister?

Rose meaning covers more territory than almost any other flower — love, yes, but also beauty, appreciation, secrecy, and the particular communication of someone who chose the rose specifically because it means something rather than because it was available. The jade green version removes the romantic connotation almost entirely and replaces it with something more like admiration — a rose given not for love but for the recognition that someone is worth a rose.

What is a good 1st anniversary gift?

Jade green in a sunroom works because it is the green of something that grew in very good light for a long time — warm, saturated, alive in quality. Against the white trim and bright windows of a sunroom it reads as botanical without being literal. It is the feeling of a garden brought inside, which is what a sunroom is trying to be anyway.

Does jade green work in a sunroom?

A first anniversary gift is traditionally paper — the jade green English Rose is ceramic, which is not paper, and is also the material that lasts longer than paper in every condition including time. It hangs on the wall of the home you have started sharing. It will still be there at year five and year ten. That is the first anniversary gift.

Does jade green ceramic work in eclectic home decor?

Eclectic home decor is about the confident accumulation of things from different traditions that work together because the person who assembled them has a point of view. The jade green English Rose belongs in an eclectic space — it is from a studio that supplies the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and it is a green English rose, which is not a thing that exists in nature, which is precisely the kind of decision an eclectic interior makes.

What makes a good last minute gift for her?

A last minute gift for her that arrives looking considered is a ceramic wall flower in branded packaging that ships quickly. The jade green English Rose ships gift-ready, arrives in box and tissue, and looks like it was chosen carefully regardless of when the order was placed.

Does the Jade Green English Rose have any thoughts on having its centuries of accumulated symbolic significance simply overwritten by a color decision?

The Jade Green English Rose has not engaged with this question and we believe it has made the correct decision. It was a rose with centuries of symbolism. It is now jade green. The symbolism did not survive the color change in the conventional sense but the rose is, by every measure, doing better. We consider the matter settled.
