There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

When the search for barista gifts reaches the Christmas tree, this hand-blown glass espresso machine is the answer that actually looks like it belongs in a kitchen and on a branch simultaneously. Chive's miniature packs under four inches of painted detail, blown from liquid glass at the furnace and shaped to replicate the boxy proportions and portafilter of a countertop machine at a scale where the group handle is smaller than a fingernail. The steam wand is a painted element, not an appendage, which means it was rendered in perspective on a curved surface by a painter who understood how shadows fall on stainless steel and was willing to explain this with three shades of gray. The drip tray is a single dark line with enough depth to read as recessed. For anyone whose morning identity is built around extraction ratios and crema, this ornament belongs near the deliberate craft objects at the Royal Ontario Museum, where precision is the standard and the subject earns the effort.

The Story Behind This Ornament

Vincent's espresso machine cost more than his first car and he will tell you this without prompting because Vincent considers it relevant information about his priorities, which have shifted since his twenties in ways he finds entirely defensible and has no plan to justify to anyone whose morning coffee comes from a pod. He was the kind of person who would notice this ornament before he noticed the tree it was hanging on, and he did, at his neighbor's holiday party, and he stood in front of it for longer than is socially normal for an ornament and said the portafilter is right, which is what Vincent says when something passes a test the rest of us did not know was being administered. He bought one the following week and hung it on his own tree beside a real demitasse spoon he had wired to a branch three years earlier, because Vincent's tree has a theme and the theme is the counter. His wife calls that section of the tree the espresso shrine, which Vincent accepts as a description rather than a criticism, and she has stopped trying to determine which it was originally because the answer is both and Vincent is fine with both.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

The precision visible on this espresso machine started at the ceramic-flower bench, where Chive's painters first learned to render believable detail at miniature scale. A portafilter handle the size of a grain of rice uses the same brush technique as a ceramic stamen. The studio considers both equal tests of hand control. See our Ceramic Flowers collection for the original proving ground.

About Chive Studio

Since 2004 Chive has priced its pieces by the time they take to paint, not by glass weight or pigment cost, which means a small ornament with high detail costs more than a large one with simple color and the studio considers this fair. The espresso machine is one of the highest-detail designs in the Food collection, with a portafilter, steam wand, drip tray, and control panel rendered on a surface smaller than a playing card. Each element requires a separate brush and a separate hand position. The studio could simplify it. Fewer details would mean faster production. The studio chose not to simplify because the people who love espresso machines love the details, and the details are what make it worth hanging.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find good barista gifts online?

Chive's hand-blown glass espresso machine is a barista gift that actually captures the machine, available at chive.com and shipped in packaging that protects every painted detail down to the portafilter. Vincent found it while browsing for kitchen-adjacent ornaments and stopped scrolling at the steam wand because Vincent recognizes steam wand accuracy the way most people recognize faces. He ordered it without consulting anyone.

Would the Espresso Machine ornament win a white elephant exchange?

The Espresso Machine Ornament would absolutely win a white elephant exchange because the room immediately identifies whose gift it is, and the person who receives it will accept the identification proudly because being known as the coffee person is not a burden, it is a credential. Vincent says the gift confesses your identity for you and you are grateful for the confession. That is its mechanism.

Is the Espresso Machine ornament a good gift for coworkers?

The Espresso Machine Ornament is a strong gift for coworkers who have built a morning ritual around their machine and would appreciate having that ritual acknowledged on the tree. Vincent received his from a colleague who had watched him explain crema to the break room, and he hung it on the tree that evening without irony. It recognizes the person it is meant for.

Is the Espresso Machine ornament made of real blown glass?

The Espresso Machine Ornament is made of real blown glass, shaped at the furnace and painted by hand with enough detail to include a portafilter handle, steam wand, and drip tray on a surface under four inches tall. Vincent held his up to his actual machine for comparison and reported that the proportions were respectful, which is Vincent's word for correct. The glass is substantial.

How big is the Espresso Machine ornament on the tree?

The Espresso Machine Ornament sits at approximately 2.56 inches wide, 2.17 inches deep, and 3.74 inches tall on the tree, which gives it the proportions of a compact countertop model scaled to ornament size. Vincent measured his with a kitchen scale nearby in case the weight was also relevant, and he reports it hangs on a mid-branch without pulling. The portafilter faces outward naturally.

How do I safely pack away the Espresso Machine ornament?

Pack the Espresso Machine Ornament in a cushioned box with the portafilter handle and steam wand protected from side compression, as these painted details are the most exposed elements. Vincent stores his in the foam insert it shipped in, nested beside the demitasse spoon ornament he wired to the branch, because Vincent's storage system mirrors his tree. Keep it dry and out of sunlight.

Do you have more food and drink ornaments like the Espresso Machine?

Chive stocks a full food and drink ornaments collection that covers the kitchen counter, the bar cart, and the bakery display, all rendered by the same painters who built this espresso machine. Vincent has surveyed the lineup and confirms the coffee-adjacent options alone warrant a scroll, which from Vincent constitutes formal endorsement. The espresso machine anchors the collection.

Is the Espresso Machine ornament packaged ready for gifting?

The Espresso Machine Ornament is not packaged ready for gifting in a presentation box but arrives in protective wrapping designed to keep the painted details and glass body intact through shipping. Vincent notes that his arrived without a mark on the portafilter, which he checked first because the portafilter is the detail and the detail is the point. No decorative boxing is included.
