There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

Golden, salted, and gleaming with just the right shine, this french fries ornament renders a paper sleeve of fries in hand-finished glass. Glassblowers form the shape, painters add the color and that particular grease-sheen entirely by hand, then a small metal cap finishes it off, sized to tuck between larger ornaments without disappearing. Nobody has ever eaten a french fry and felt genuine regret about wanting one more, and nobody has ever meant it when they said they probably should not have. The fries arrive hot and salted and vanish before any real decision gets made about them, and the only open question was ever how many, and the answer was always more than originally planned. Buy this for whoever intends to have just a few and never quite does, and has never once been sorry about it. The Royal Ontario Museum has never displayed a fry, but it would understand the appeal of something devoured on sight.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My sister Nadia orders a large fries at every restaurant regardless of what else is on the table, treats them as a given rather than a side dish, and has never once regretted the decision even when the fries in question turned out disappointing, because to her the disappointment is still part of the ritual, and a ritual doesn't stop being one just because the execution wobbles. She has strong, specific opinions about the correct ratio of crisp to soft that she will share unprompted, and will not apologize for holding them, and honestly, why should she. When we formed this ornament, we went back and forth on the color for a while, since too uniform a gold read as artificial and too varied read as burnt, and the version we settled on took three separate glassblowing sessions to get the gradient right, pale at the base and darker toward the tips, the way an actual fry looks under a heat lamp. We wanted the salt visible without looking dusted-on. Nadia would eat this if it were edible, and has said as much, more than once, with complete sincerity and zero embarrassment about it. This one's for anyone who treats a side dish as the whole point.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ornaments Are a Great Gift. We Have Opinions About the Rest.

More Food Christmas Ornaments

Our Food & Drink collection is a menu of the things people love without apology, rendered in hand-painted glass. The fries never last long here, and the Take Out ornament waits close by for whoever orders next.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. That gradient survives a close look, pale at the base and darker toward the tip, just like the real thing. Plenty more dishes nobody apologizes for are waiting in our Food Christmas Ornaments .

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Glass has its single month on the tree. The rest of the calendar belongs instead to our ceramic flower arrangements , holding its color for good — no water needed, no wilting permitted, no exceptions made. Someone who treats a side dish as the main event might also appreciate a flower arrangement that refuses to play a supporting role either, holding center stage on a counter for as long as anyone cares to look at it.

About Chive Studio

Chive Studio has made the case since 2004 that novelty and craftsmanship were never actually opposites, whatever certain skeptics assumed back when the studio doors first opened for business. Most of the calendar belongs to pots, vases, and ceramic flowers, a seed season arriving with every spring in its turn, and then the weather changes and so does the studio, straight over to glass ornaments people genuinely want hanging on their tree. We refuse to treat dignity as a design requirement, because the things people love without apology deserve exactly as much craft as the things they're supposed to love instead, maybe more, honestly speaking, if we're being direct about it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a french fries ornament for the christmas tree?

Yes — this french fries ornament is in stock now at chive.com, hand-blown glass, golden and salted with the shine done right. My sister Nadia, who orders a large fries regardless of what else is on the table, examined the gradient and said only, correct. She does not say correct lightly. It counts.

Would the French Fries ornament make a great secret santa pick?

It's a reliable secret santa pick — affordable, instantly recognizable, and funny without straining for it. I gave one to Nadia's coworker last year on Nadia's advice, and the coworker reportedly held it up and said, this is so me, which is the entire secret santa victory condition. Nadia took full credit. Naturally.

Who should I buy the French Fries ornament for?

Buy it for whoever treats the side dish as the main event and has never apologized for it. Nadia has been asked to share her fries exactly twice in her life, and both people are still spoken of in our family the way other families discuss minor criminals. The ornament is for her kind. They know who they are.

How is the French Fries glass ornament actually made?

Glass first, color after — the gradient hand-painted pale at the base and darker toward the tips, the way fries actually look under a heat lamp. Nadia audited an early sample against a real order she'd brought for reference, side by side on the counter. The sample passed; the reference did not survive the audit. Fair outcome.

What are the dimensions of the French Fries ornament?

It measures 2.76 inches long, 1.77 wide, and 4.53 tall — small enough to tuck between larger ornaments without vanishing. Nadia pointed out that this is smaller than an actual large fries, which is true, and also the only complaint she has filed to date. One complaint in three seasons of ownership. From Nadia, a rave.

How do I clean and care for the French Fries ornament?

Dust it with a soft, dry cloth and keep water and sprays away from the painted finish. Nadia cleans hers exactly once a year, the day the tree goes up, with the focus of someone restoring a painting, and it has looked new for three seasons running. Once a year is enough. Do it her way.

What food and drink ornaments pair well with the French Fries?

The Fast Food Combo is the natural pairing — the same order, split across two branches. Nadia and our uncle Walt discovered their orders overlap almost entirely, a fact that stunned them both into a rare moment of mutual respect. The two ornaments hang side by side now. The truce holds.

Does the French Fries ornament ship in protective gift packaging?

It ships in protective transit packaging, not a presentation gift box — the priority is the glass arriving whole. Nadia unboxed hers like she was defusing something, then admitted the packing was overkill in the best way. If it's a gift, wrap it yourself after it arrives. She used a takeout bag. Genuinely.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
