The Story Behind This Ornament

My friend Dave lost his golden, Biscuit, in March, and in November his wife called me with a request she made me promise to execute precisely: find a golden retriever ornament that "looks like a good one, not a cartoon." I understood the assignment completely. Biscuit was not a cartoon. Biscuit was a professional — fourteen years of door greetings performed at full sincerity, zero phoned in, including the last one, when he could only manage to stand halfway and did it anyway, because the door was his post and Dave was his person and some jobs you finish. Dave does not talk about Biscuit much. What he does is pause, every single time he comes home, for about a second and a half in the doorway — a gap in the routine shaped exactly like a dog. His wife hung the ornament at the height Biscuit's head used to be. She did not announce this; Dave noticed on his own, the way you notice these things, all at once and in the chest. He stood there a while. Then he said "yeah, that's him," which from Dave is a eulogy. It is on the tree again this year, same branch, same height. Some ornaments decorate.
