There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The Green Robot Ornament has clearly been on duty since long before anyone started keeping track, and shows zero interest in clocking out now, all rendered in hand-blown glass. Glass is gathered and shaped into the boxy little body first, every seam and dial gets outlined afterward in careful hand-applied color, and a metal cap seals the piece off before it ever leaves the studio floor. What is not up for debate is this robot's reliability, its steady presence, its complete lack of drama, none of which has ever wavered, because some machines are simply built for the single job they perform and never once complain about performing it. Get this for whoever shows up every single time, the one you call first, who has never once let the room down when it counted. TIFF screens plenty of stories about robots who eventually turn on everyone; this one has clearly never read that particular script.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My nephew Oscar named his robot Steven, after a substitute teacher he liked in the fourth grade, and has maintained for six straight years that Steven the robot and Steven the substitute teacher share a personality, which is calm, reliable, and completely unbothered by chaos happening directly around them. Steven the robot has survived two moves, one flood in the basement, and an incident involving a dog that nobody in the family discusses in any real detail anymore. Through all of it Steven just sat there, green and steady, doing the one job a shelf robot has, which is existing quietly and looking slightly amused about it, no matter what is happening in the room. Oscar is twenty-two now and has a job and an apartment and strong opinions about interest rates, and Steven still sits on a shelf in his childhood bedroom because his parents have long since made peace with the fact that Steven is not going anywhere, structurally or emotionally. Every visit home, Oscar checks on Steven first, before he greets anyone else in the house, which everyone finds slightly insulting and completely understandable, because some loyalty just runs that steady, and some robots earn the exact shelf they get to keep.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Space & Alien Christmas Ornaments

Our Space & Alien collection is crewed by the loyal, the launched, and the unexplained, all in hand-painted glass. Overhead on the same tree, the UFO ornament is the one this robot has still never identified.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. The Green Robot holds its post admirably, night after night, without ever once complaining about it. Meet the rest of its crew in the Space & Alien ornament collection.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

An ornament celebrates something for a month; a ceramic flower does it all year. Chive's ceramic flowers are hand-built stems that never wilt, never need water, and never stop being the thing people comment on when they visit. If the Green Robot is for whoever shows up every single time, the flowers are for the person who shows up with something that lasts. Same shelf, different season, zero maintenance. The two get along better than you would think.

About Chive Studio

Machines do the same job the same way every single time, which is useful, and also the exact opposite of what happens on our studio floor. Every ornament we have shipped since the studio's first year in 2004 gets shaped by a real set of hands at a torch, never poured from a mold, so no two pieces turn out perfectly identical. We consider that a feature, not a flaw to fix. Ceramic flower stems get the same treatment come spring, hand-shaped one at a time by somebody paying attention. A robot would never tolerate that kind of inconsistency. We built an entire studio specifically to allow that kind of small, honest variation to survive.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Green Robot ornament for the christmas tree?

Yes, the Green Robot ornament is available for the tree, in hand-blown glass with a slightly worn-in green finish. My nephew Oscar named his own robot Steven, after a substitute teacher he liked in fourth grade, and has maintained the resemblance for six straight years running now. This ornament carries the same calm energy Steven does.

Would the Green Robot ornament win a white elephant exchange?

It tends to do well at white elephant, mostly for the moment somebody actually unwraps it and the whole table leans in close. Oscar's robot Steven has survived two moves and one basement flood without ever once losing that same steady, unbothered look on his little plastic face. This one gets a similar reaction, minus the flood.

Is the Green Robot ornament a good gift idea?

It makes a strong gift idea for the reliable, unbothered person in your life. Oscar is twenty-two now, with a job and an apartment, and still checks on Steven first every single time he visits his parents, before greeting anyone else in the house. That's the specific kind of loyalty this ornament is built for.

What is the Green Robot ornament made from?

It is made from hand-blown glass, shaped into the boxy little body first and detailed afterward entirely by hand. Oscar's robot Steven is plastic and has needed exactly zero repairs in over a decade, a fact he brings up more often than is strictly necessary at family dinners. This glass version asks for gentler handling.

What size is the Green Robot ornament out of the box?

The Green Robot ornament measures about 4.3 inches tall, sized to hold its own on a crowded branch. Steven, Oscar's actual robot, sits on a childhood bedroom shelf that has not changed in over a decade despite Oscar himself changing considerably in that time. This one asks for a lot less shelf space overall.

How do I keep the Green Robot ornament safe in storage?

Wrap it individually in tissue and store it upright, kept clear of anything heavier nearby. Steven has survived a flood and two house moves without a single crack, a fact Oscar repeats at every family gathering like a genuine personal achievement. This glass version needs gentler handling than Steven ever did.

Do you have more space and alien ornaments like the Green Robot?

Yes, the UFO ornament makes a natural neighbor on the same branch. Oscar would insist Steven and the UFO have a whole history together, entirely invented, oddly detailed, and completely uncheckable by anyone else in the family. Browse the Space & Alien ornament collection for the rest of that same universe.

Does the Green Robot ornament ship gift ready?

It does not ship in a presentation gift box, but it does travel in secure, padded packaging. Oscar, for the record, has never once wrapped Steven in anything, gift-worthy or otherwise, across twenty-two years of steady ownership. Wrapping here is entirely up to you. Steven never really needed one either.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
