There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The hot dog ornament is a hand-blown glass Christmas ornament shaped like a fully dressed hot dog on a bun, mustard painted on and ketchup pointedly absent. Each one is mouth-blown and hand-painted in the traditional method, finished with a metal cap and hanging loop, and scaled to hold its own on a full tree. My father ate hot dogs at every sporting event he attended for forty years and called it dinner, with the serene confidence of a man who never once questioned a food decision. Mustard only. Offer him ketchup and he would look at you the way you look at someone who has revealed something about themselves at a party. You already know a person exactly like this. You have known them your entire life. Hang this for them. It is the kind of small, exact object you would expect to find in the gift shop at the Royal Ontario Museum, which is precisely the point.

The Story Behind This Ornament

He kept a mental ranking of stadium hot dog stands that he updated across four decades and would recite, unprompted, in the car. The rankings were not about the hot dog, exactly. They were about line speed, mustard placement, the structural integrity of the bun, and one vendor in section 114 who he believed — sincerely, till the end — remembered him. She did not remember him. She was being professional. He knew this and chose not to know it, which is its own kind of faith. When we designed this ornament we argued about the mustard. A thin line reads elegant; a wide ribbon reads honest. We went honest, because nobody who loves a hot dog loves it elegantly. They love it standing up, at an event, holding a drink in the other hand, shouting something at a field. The ornament hangs there all December quietly containing all of that: the lines, the rankings, the vendor who was just being nice. People will see a glass hot dog on your tree and laugh. Then one of them will go quiet, and you will know exactly who they are thinking about, and that is the entire point of hanging food on a tree.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Food & Drink Christmas Ornaments

Our Food & Drink collection is a menu of the things people love without apology, rendered in hand-painted glass. The hot dog earned its place here first; the Sandwich Cookie ornament hangs beautifully beside it, four branches apart.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. The hot dog becomes a conversation the moment it goes up, every single year. See everything else worth arguing over in the food and drink ornament collection.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

An ornament celebrates something for a month; a ceramic flower does it all year. Chive's ceramic flowers are hand-built stems that never wilt, never need water, and never stop being the thing people comment on when they visit. If the hot dog is for the person who loves food, the flowers are for the person who loves things that last. Same shelf, different season, zero maintenance. The two get along better than you would think.

About Chive Studio

Chive Studio has been designing objects with a sense of humor since 2004, back when we were told, repeatedly and with concern, that nobody wanted a serious company making unserious things. Two decades later we make ceramic flowers, garden pots, and vases through the year — seeds too, in season — and when winter comes, glass ornaments shaped like the things people actually love — which turn out to be hot dogs and dogs and bottles of gin far more often than angels or snowflakes. Every ornament is drawn up in our own studio, made by the old methods, and built to come out of the same box for twenty Decembers running. We believe a Christmas tree should tell the truth about the household underneath it, and the truth is usually delicious.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a hot dog ornament online?

You can buy the hot dog ornament right here at chive.com, shipped straight to your door in its own protective box. We would call it our most dignified glass frankfurter, but it is also our only one, and it has never needed the title. It knows what it is. It has always known.

Is the Hot Dog on a Bun ornament a good stocking stuffer?

Yes — at under four inches long, the Hot Dog on a Bun ornament slides into a stocking with room left over for the orange nobody eats. It is the rare stocking stuffer that gets hung up immediately rather than set aside in a drawer, and the drawer is where gifts go to think about what they did. This one skips the drawer entirely. Straight to the tree.

Who should I buy the Hot Dog on a Bun ornament for?

Buy it for the person who has strong opinions about condiments and defends them annually, at volume, at the grill. Every family has one: the stadium loyalist, the purist who believes ketchup on a hot dog is a confession of something. This ornament tells them you have been listening all these years. They will be genuinely moved, briefly. Then they will explain mustard.

What material is the Hot Dog on a Bun ornament made of?

The Hot Dog on a Bun ornament is hand-blown glass, shaped over a flame and painted entirely by hand, from the bun's toasted edges to the mustard line. No two come out perfectly identical, which feels right for a food that has never once been assembled the same way twice in human history. The glass is sturdier than it looks. So is the hot dog, frankly.

What size is the Hot Dog on a Bun christmas ornament?

It measures 3.58 inches long, 1.38 inches wide, and 1.97 inches tall — about the footprint of an actual cocktail wiener, scaled up with real ambition. That is large enough to read clearly from across the room, and small enough not to bully the ornaments around it. A tree has politics, and every branch is a negotiation. This one gets along.

How should I store the Hot Dog on a Bun ornament?

Store it in its original box, wrapped in tissue, on a shelf where nothing heavier will migrate on top of it between now and next December. Glass ornaments mostly die in storage, not on trees — the attic is statistically far more dangerous than the cat. Treat it like leftovers you actually intend to eat. Top shelf, protected, remembered.

What other food and drink christmas ornaments do you make?

The hot dog hangs alongside a full food and drink ornament collection — sandwich cookies, cupcakes, gin bottles, and other things people love without apology or moderation. Trees decorated entirely in food have a warmth that the color-coordinated designer trees never quite manage. We are not neutral on this question. We make the food.

Is the Hot Dog on a Bun ornament packaged ready for gifting?

It ships securely packed to protect the glass in transit — sturdy shipping packaging rather than a presentation gift box, so plan on a minute with tissue or wrapping paper. At under four inches long, it wraps faster than anything else on your list. The hot dog travels safe and arrives ready for its close-up. You handle the bow.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
