There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

A crab ornament has to solve one problem immediately: crabs move sideways, and everyone treats that like a punchline the crab has never once accepted as one, not even politely. This jeweled version is hand-painted glass with faceted detailing worked across the shell and claws, built for a creature that gets where it's going by the route that makes sense to it, arriving exactly on schedule regardless of which direction the trip appeared to take. The jeweled crab has additionally decided the journey itself should look good along the way, which was never a requirement but became an option it took completely, without apology, and without slowing down. Hang this for whoever takes the scenic route on purpose and still shows up looking better dressed than everyone who went straight there instead. TIFF's red carpet has hosted less committed sparkle than this, and it has certainly, over the years, hosted considerably worse posture.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My cousin Leo has never taken a direct route anywhere in his life, and he has never once been late. This should not be mathematically possible, and yet I have watched him leave for a restaurant by way of a record store, a tailor, and a pier, and arrive before the party that took the highway. He drives coastal roads on principle. He gets dressed the way other people pack for trips, deliberately and with contingencies, and when he shows up — always exactly on time, always inexplicably — he looks like the evening was designed around him. When I saw this crab, faceted and jeweled and permanently mid-scuttle, I did not think of Leo so much as recognize him. I gave it to him in January, out of season, because waiting eleven months felt dishonest. He examined the shell, approved of the claw detailing, and observed that the crab was clearly headed somewhere excellent by a route only it could see, which is the closest Leo has ever come to describing himself out loud. It hangs from Leo's tree at a slight angle, sideways-bound, catching candlelight from two directions. He repositions it each December until the sparkle sits right. It always takes him a while. He always arrives.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

The crab takes the long way; our ceramic flowers simply stay. Hand-crafted bloom by bloom, they hold their color and form indefinitely — no water, no seasons, no slow decline on the windowsill. They are the line this studio was built on, and the reason people found us in the first place. When the ornaments retire to their boxes in January, the flowers keep the house looking inhabited by someone with intentions.

About Chive Studio

Chive has been making things by hand since 2004, and every painter who joins the studio starts the same way: with the crab. Faceted detailing is the hardest skill on the bench — each highlight has to sit exactly where light would land, and there is no disguising a miss — so the crab became the studio's unofficial entrance exam. New painters practice on blanks until a senior painter stops finding things to say. Some pass in a week. One took an entire summer, and she is now the person who trains everyone else, which the studio considers the correct ending to that story. The crab you hang was painted by somebody who earned the shell. The claws are where it shows.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes a quality crab ornament in blown glass?

Chive makes a quality crab ornament in blown glass, hand-painted with faceted jeweled detailing set highlight by highlight. I bought the first one for my cousin Leo, who has never taken a direct route anywhere and never once been late. He examined the claw work and called it correct. From Leo, correctness is the whole review.

Would the Jeweled Crab ornament win a white elephant exchange?

The Jeweled Crab ornament would win a white elephant exchange from the very first pick. At my in-laws' game, a grandmother with no previous record chose it in round one, passing over three larger boxes on the theory that sparkle does not need volume. She was right. Nobody ever opened the biggest box. It went home unclaimed.

Is the Jeweled Crab ornament a good gift idea?

Yes — the Jeweled Crab ornament is a wonderful gift idea for the friend who treats directness as one option among many. Mine is my cousin Leo, who has never once used the entrance everyone else uses and cannot explain why, or will not. He recognized himself in the crab immediately. He was not offended. He was flattered.

What is the Jeweled Crab ornament made from?

The Jeweled Crab ornament is made from hand-blown glass with painted detailing and faceted jewel accents placed individually across the shell and claws. My cousin ran a thumb over the facets, slowly, and reported that every single one of them had actual edges, which mattered to him enormously. Then he bought a second one. For himself.

What size is the Jeweled Crab ornament out of the box?

Out of the box, the Jeweled Crab ornament measures 4.33 inches wide and 3.54 inches tall, with claws that read clearly across a room. Leo gave his a branch with clearance on both sides, because the crab, he says, uses both. I measured his placement once at his insistence. Dead level. Naturally.

How do I keep the Jeweled Crab ornament safe in storage?

Keep the Jeweled Crab ornament safe in storage by wrapping it in soft tissue, claws padded individually, in a rigid box somewhere climate-stable. Leo assigns his crab a private compartment with the claws wrapped separately, a ritual he performs each January with a drink nearby. No roommates, he says, and the crab concurs. So do I.

Do you have more animal ornaments like the Jeweled Crab?

Yes — we have more animal ornaments like the Jeweled Crab, including the Pink Glittery Dog Bone for the household's actual ruler. My cousin Leo added the bone for his terrier, who has claimed it by staring. The two hang a branch apart in what Leo calls the shine wing, admission by invitation only. The terrier invites no one. I checked.

Does the Jeweled Crab ornament ship gift ready?

The Jeweled Crab ornament ships gift ready in the sense that matters — nested in protective tissue inside a sturdy carton, not a decorative gift box. Every facet on Leo's arrived intact, which he verified facet by facet, lamp on. I supplied the bow in his doorway and he straightened it immediately. Of course he did.
