July Birth Flower - Water Lily

July's flower. The pool is gone. The wall remains.

Regular price $32.15

July birth flower ceramic gifts have the water lily to work with, which is the flower that requires a pond and receives no credit for this. Chive made a ceramic version in chartreuse — 5 inches, which is the largest in the birth flower range and earns it. The water lily does not need a pond in this form. It needs a wall and one screw, and it will occupy that position with the same composure it has had since the Monet paintings, which were painted in a pond garden and not in a Shopify catalog.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

July birthday gift from a studio with a pool it no longer has

Ryan's sister spent fifteen years trying to get her water lily to bloom. It did. It lasted four glorious days and she took five hundred pictures of it. The same sister spent fifteen years on the rose. Same four days. Same five hundred pictures. The ceramic version does not have a departure date. It is chartreuse, five inches, and does not require the specific patience that growing water lilies demands from people who own ponds.

Chive ceramic flowers are stocked in the New York Botanical Garden, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and more than 200 galleries and museum shops worldwide. The Birth Flower Collection was designed in Toronto, made by hand since 1999.

July birthday gift ideas for the person who has everything except a water lily on the wall

The chartreuse water lily is the largest of the twelve birth flower ceramics at five inches, which makes it a statement piece on any wall. It ships in a Chive gift box. It does not require a pond, a shaded area, or the specific patience that growing water lilies demands from people who own ponds. The New York Botanical Garden stocks it.

Birth flower gifts, designed by hand

Every Birth Flower piece begins as a sketch in our Toronto design studio. Each month's bloom is drawn from botanical tradition — not a generic floral shape, but the specific flower historically tied to that birth month, studied and refined until the ceramic holds its character. Snowdrop for January. Poppy for August. Narcissus for December. Drawn by hand, glazed by hand, made to be kept.

Birth flower gifts work because they're personal in a way most objects aren't — tied to a date, a person, a month that means something specific. A ceramic birth flower is a gift that doesn't expire, doesn't wilt, and doesn't need a vase.

These are pieces made for milestone birthdays, for mothers, for the person who already has everything. Birth flower gifts for grandma, for a best friend, for anyone worth giving something original. Designed by Todd Newgren, Chive Studio founder, over 25 years.

How to Hang Ceramic Flowers?

In 60 seconds or less

One discovers these flowers, each bearing a secret: a tiny keyhole nestled in the back, waiting for its destiny. The ritual feels almost predetermined - reaching into that dusty jar of orphaned screws, the ones squirreled away over countless home projects. Those odd bits of metal, collected like precious coins, finally finding their purpose. A quick twist of the drill, and there hangs beauty, supported by hardware whose previous life remains a mystery.

Frequently asked questions

How does a ceramic wall flower hang?

The chartreuse water lily hangs with a single screw . The keyhole mount on the back sits flush against the wall. At 5 inches, it is the largest flower in the Birth Flower Collection, so the single screw carries a bit more ceramic than the 3-inch versions, and it does this without complaint. The process takes 90 seconds. The screw is not supplied. For plaster or tile, a small anchor handles it. After 90 seconds the water lily is on the wall and that is a permanent state.

What is the July birth flower?

The July birth flower is the water lily — the aquatic bloom that has been floating on ponds and appearing in Impressionist paintings since before Impressionism was a category. It represents purity, enlightenment, and rebirth in the symbolic tradition, which is an impressive range of meanings for a flower that requires a specific depth of water to function. Chive's ceramic version is chartreuse, 5 inches, made by hand. It does not require water, a pond, or a landscape plan. It requires one screw.

What is a good gift for a woman born in July?

A gift for a woman born in July is strongest when it references the month specifically. The chartreuse ceramic water lily — July birth flower, 5 inches, made by hand, stocked in the New York Botanical Garden — is the July birthday gift that arrives in a gift box, hangs in 90 seconds, and is still on the wall at the next birthday. It is not a candle, not a print, and not a fresh flower that will be gone before the birthday week ends. It is the largest flower in the Birth Flower Collection and carries itself accordingly.

What is a good gift for someone born in the summer?

A good gift for a summer birthday is one that acknowledges the specific month rather than the general season. July gets the water lily — 5 inches in chartreuse, made by hand in Toronto, stocked in the New York Botanical Garden and Longwood Gardens. It ships gift-ready in a Chive box, hangs in 90 seconds, and does not have an expiration. The summer birthday gift problem is usually that summer birthdays get the least creative gifting of the year. The water lily is the correction for July.

What is a good plant for a living room with indirect light?

Plants for living rooms with indirect light have a reasonable list: pothos, snake plants, ZZ plants. None of them are water lilies, which require direct sun and still water. The ceramic water lily requires neither — it requires a wall and one screw. At 5 inches in chartreuse, it reads as a botanical statement in a living room without the maintenance that botanical statements usually demand. The New York Botanical Garden stocks the Birth Flower Collection. The living room does not need to know this but might appreciate it.

What is a good anniversary gift for July?

A July anniversary gift works best when it references the month specifically — in this case the water lily, which is the July birth flower. The chartreuse ceramic water lily — 5 inches, made by hand, stocked in the New York Botanical Garden and Longwood Gardens — is the anniversary gift that acknowledges both the occasion and the month. It ships gift-ready, hangs in 90 seconds, and is still on the wall at the next anniversary. Longwood Gardens has one of the finest water lily collections in the world. Chive's ceramic version does not require their level of infrastructure.

How long do water lilies bloom?

Fresh water lilies bloom for approximately 3–5 days per flower before closing, with new blooms continuing across a season of 8–12 weeks. Maintaining a water lily requires a pond, warm temperatures, full sun, and the willingness to manage an aquatic plant. The ceramic water lily has been in the New York Botanical Garden's gift shop for considerably longer than 12 weeks without any of these requirements. Chive's chartreuse version hangs on a wall and blooms indefinitely, which is the botanical upgrade nobody asked for but several people ordered.

What is the best gift for a July birthday?

The best gift for a July birthday is specific to July, which is the water lily. The chartreuse ceramic water lily — 5 inches, the largest in the Birth Flower Collection, made by hand in Toronto, stocked in the New York Botanical Garden and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston — is the gift that will be on the wall at the next July birthday and all subsequent ones. It ships in a Chive gift box. It requires one screw and 90 seconds. The Museum of Fine Arts Boston stocks it, which is either a credential or a detail, and both are accurate.
