Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Hawthorn flower meaning is tied to a month that doesn't need to make an entrance. May is already agreed upon as the best month, by consensus, without a campaign — and this blue white hawthorn carries that same quiet confidence instead of announcing itself. It doesn't have to. Clusters of small five-petaled blooms, hand-shaped in tight groups the way hawthorn actually flowers along a hedgerow, glazed in a cool white-on-blue that reads differently depending on the light in the room. Each cluster is shaped by hand in the Chive workshop, then mounted to hold its place on a wall the way hawthorn hedges hold theirs along an old property line for generations. Longwood Gardens has cultivated flowering hedgerow trees like this one since the estate's earliest plantings, on the theory that some plants earn permanence rather than requesting it. This one earns its spot the same way, every May, without fail. Chive has trusted quiet confidence since 2004.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Blue White Hawthorn ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

Quiet Confidence, Every May

Everyone agrees May is the best month, without a campaign, without a vote, just quiet universal consensus that this is the one that finally gets it right. The hawthorn doesn't need to announce that it agrees. It just shows up in tight clusters along old hedgerows, the way it's done for generations, carrying that same confidence without ever raising its voice about it. This blue white hawthorn holds that same quiet certainty on a wall — small five-petaled blooms clustered the way hawthorn actually flowers outdoors, hand-shaped in tight groups, glazed in a cool white-on-blue that shifts depending on the light in the room. It mounts to hold its place the same way a hedgerow holds its place along a property line, for years, without needing to be moved or explained to anyone who walks past it. It doesn't have to convince anyone that May is the best month. Everyone already agreed on that a long time ago, and the hawthorn's just been quietly proving it right, every single year, without fail. It's not trying to win anyone over. May already did that job decades ago, and the hawthorn's just been agreeing quietly ever since. That's the whole arrangement, quietly renewed every single May without needing a reminder.

The Birth Flower Collection

The Birth Flower collection built its logic around one fact everyone knows about themselves — the month they were born — turned into a bloom claiming that meaning for centuries. Every piece trades a generic gift for one already assigned. The clustered blooms are shaped in tight groups on purpose, the same way hawthorn actually flowers along a real hedgerow outdoors, cluster by cluster, rather than as a single isolated bloom on its own.

Two Ways to Display It

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. Plenty of people start with a single Blue White Hawthorn for their own birth month, then quietly add more for family later on. Both versions skip water, drainage, and any seasonal swap entirely. It mounts once, holds its place the way a real hedgerow holds its place along a property line, and simply stays there.

Large Tika Ceramic Pot 8 Inch Greenery

May makes almost everyone briefly believe they've developed a green thumb overnight. The 8 Inch Greenery size gives that theory somewhere real to get tested, positioned near the hawthorn on a shelf or windowsill. If the confidence holds past June, it's already the right size. If it doesn't, it still looks entirely finished sitting there empty, no judgment implied. Either way, it sits there looking entirely intentional.

Clustered on Purpose, Never Alone

Nothing at Chive is built to shout, and that's been true since the doors opened in 2004. Quiet confidence photographs better over time than anything designed to grab attention immediately, and the studio would rather bet on that instinct every time. Pieces are shaped by hand, and a color that shifts slightly depending on the light gets treated here as a feature worth keeping, not a flaw to correct before anything ships. This doesn't need to announce itself the way louder decor tends to. It just holds its place on a wall, the same way a hedgerow holds its place along an old property line, for years, without needing anyone's permission to stay.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good teacher gift besides a candle or mug?

A good teacher gift besides a candle or mug should say something more specific than 'thank you for existing near my child' in ceramic form. This blue white hawthorn does that by carrying an actual meaning — hope and protection — instead of a sentiment printed on a mug. It's the rare teacher gift that doesn't quietly get regifted by June.

What does a hawthorn flower mean as a May birthday gift?

A hawthorn flower means hope and protection as a May birthday gift, which happens to be a solid pairing for the one month everyone already agrees is the best of the year. Someone born in May gets assigned a flower that backs up the confidence the month already carries on its own. Not every birth month earns that kind of built-in alignment.

Is a Blue White Hawthorn a meaningful 8th anniversary gift?

A Blue White Hawthorn makes a meaningful 8th anniversary gift, since the cool white-on-blue glaze reads as understated rather than showy, which tends to suit eight years together more than anything flashier ever would. Quiet confidence has simply aged better than most anniversary gifts by year eight. It doesn't need a grand gesture.

Does a ceramic hawthorn work best in a living room or entryway?

A ceramic hawthorn works best in a living room or entryway, mounted somewhere it can hold its place the way hawthorn hedgerows hold theirs along an old property line for decades. Most people find it settles into a room fast, wherever it actually ends up landing first. It doesn't need a dedicated gallery wall to make sense on its own.

Does the May birth flower ship ready for Mother's Day?

The May birth flower ships ready for Mother's Day, which lands squarely inside May most years, making this a rare birth-month flower that quietly doubles as a holiday gift too, without any extra planning required. That's a genuinely good return for a single purchase, timed well in advance. One order, two occasions covered.

Is a ceramic hawthorn a good cottagecore housewarming gift?

A ceramic hawthorn makes a good cottagecore housewarming gift, since the hedgerow-cluster shape reads as pulled-from-a-garden rather than manufactured, which is most of what that whole aesthetic is chasing anyway. It gives a new place instant character without requiring an entire decorating theme built around it first. One piece, and the whole mood is basically established already.

Is a ceramic hawthorn a longer-lasting keepsake than a necklace?

It just stays on the wall permanently, visible every day, doing the one job a piece of jewelry sometimes quietly forgets to do at all: actually being seen by anyone. A ceramic hawthorn is a longer-lasting keepsake than a necklace, mostly because it doesn't require remembering to take it off before a shower or a swim in the ocean.

Is a ceramic birth flower a good Mother's Day gift idea?

A ceramic birth flower makes a good Mother's Day gift idea in general, since it's personalized to an actual date without requiring engraving, monogramming, or a special trip to a jeweler downtown. It says something specific about her without asking her to explain the reference to anyone else in the room. That's rarer in a Mother's Day gift than it really should be.
