May Birth Flower - Hawthorn

May's flower. The bees did not follow it inside.

Regular price $29.65

May birth flower ceramic gifts have the hawthorn to work with — the blossom most people recognize as the thing covering hedgerows in white every spring, now in a blue white glaze. Three inches. Designed for a wall. The hawthorn does not have a strong following in the birthday gift market, which is the point. Chive made this one because the market had not bothered, and spite remains a valid creative driver.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

May birthday gift from a studio that knows what hawthorn does

Todd's mother loved hawthorn because bees love hawthorn. His love for his mother dwindled a little because of this. The blue white hawthorn is the May flower: specific enough that the person receiving it will know you looked it up, unusual enough that no one else at the birthday will have brought one. The ceramic version hangs with one screw in 90 seconds and has never once attracted a bee. This is the primary design improvement over the original.

Chive ceramic flowers are stocked in Denver Botanic Gardens, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, SFMOMA, and more than 200 galleries and museum shops worldwide. The Birth Flower Collection was designed in Toronto, made by hand since 1999.

May birthday gift ideas for the person who has been receiving roses for years

The blue white hawthorn ships in a Chive gift box, ready to hang. It is the May birthday gift that does not arrive wrapped in the assumption that roses are the default. It is hawthorn — the actual May flower — in a glaze that matches nothing in the standard gifting aisle and stays on the wall long after the birthday has been converted into a memory.

Birth flower gifts, designed by hand

Every Birth Flower piece begins as a sketch in our Toronto design studio. Each month's bloom is drawn from botanical tradition — not a generic floral shape, but the specific flower historically tied to that birth month, studied and refined until the ceramic holds its character. Snowdrop for January. Poppy for August. Narcissus for December. Drawn by hand, glazed by hand, made to be kept.

Birth flower gifts work because they're personal in a way most objects aren't — tied to a date, a person, a month that means something specific. A ceramic birth flower is a gift that doesn't expire, doesn't wilt, and doesn't need a vase.

These are pieces made for milestone birthdays, for mothers, for the person who already has everything. Birth flower gifts for grandma, for a best friend, for anyone worth giving something original. Designed by Todd Newgren, Chive Studio founder, over 25 years.

How to Hang Ceramic Flowers?

In 60 seconds or less

One discovers these flowers, each bearing a secret: a tiny keyhole nestled in the back, waiting for its destiny. The ritual feels almost predetermined - reaching into that dusty jar of orphaned screws, the ones squirreled away over countless home projects. Those odd bits of metal, collected like precious coins, finally finding their purpose. A quick twist of the drill, and there hangs beauty, supported by hardware whose previous life remains a mystery.

Frequently asked questions

How does a ceramic wall flower hang?

The whitish blue hawthorn hangs with a single screw . The keyhole mount on the back sits flush against the wall once hung. The process takes 90 seconds. The screw is not supplied — standard household size works. For plaster or tile, a small anchor handles it without drama. After 90 seconds the hawthorn is on the wall. The wall's opinion on this has not been solicited.

What is the May birth flower?

The May birth flower is the hawthorn — the hedgerow blossom that covers most of the British and European countryside in white every spring and has been a symbol of hope and good luck since before good luck had an official flower. It is not the most famous birth flower in the calendar, which is either a problem or an opportunity depending on whether the giver wants to give something specific. Chive's ceramic version is whitish blue, 3 inches, made by hand. It is the only ceramic hawthorn in the Denver Botanic Gardens gift shop.

What is an unusual birthday gift?

An unusual birthday gift is one that requires the recipient to tell the story of how they got it. A whitish blue ceramic hawthorn — the May birth flower, 3 inches, made by hand in Toronto, stocked in Denver Botanic Gardens — is unusual in the way that requires explanation: it is the actual birth month flower, in an unexpected glaze, made by hand, stocked in institutions, and it hangs with one screw in 90 seconds. The explanation takes about 30 seconds. The flower is on the wall for the rest of it.

Is a ceramic flower a good Mother's Day gift?

A ceramic birth flower is one of the better Mother's Day gift options available, specifically because it references the recipient's birth month rather than a generic appreciation of motherhood. The May hawthorn in whitish blue — made by hand, stocked in Denver Botanic Gardens, ships gift-ready — is the Mother's Day gift for the mother born in May who has been receiving tulips for years. It hangs in 90 seconds, requires nothing after that, and is still on the wall at the next Mother's Day and all subsequent ones.

What is the best plant for a bathroom with low light?

Plants for bathrooms with low light are a short and largely disappointing list. The ceramic hawthorn requires no light, no humidity, no watering, and no concerned glances from guests who notice the plant is not doing well. It is ceramic and will remain whitish blue on the bathroom wall regardless of what the light situation is. SFMOMA stocks the Birth Flower Collection, which is perhaps the most credentialed endorsement available for putting ceramic flowers in any room, including bathrooms.

What makes hawthorn a good gift for someone born in May?

Hawthorn is the confirmed May birth flower in the traditional floral calendar — specific to the month in the same way that the recipient's birthday is specific to May. Most May birthday gifts ignore this entirely and opt for something seasonal. A whitish blue ceramic hawthorn acknowledges the month specifically, which is a different kind of attention. It ships gift-ready, hangs in 90 seconds, and does not require the giver to explain why they chose it, because the month explains it. Denver Botanic Gardens agrees.

Has the whitish blue hawthorn been told it is the most botanically specific birth flower in the calendar?

The hawthorn has been told. It took the information calmly and continued being a hawthorn in a whitish blue glaze, which is all it was ever going to do. Of the twelve birth flowers in the Chive collection, the hawthorn occupies the category of flowers that require the most explanation to a general audience — snowdrop, primrose, and hawthorn all outrank rose and daffodil in this metric — and the ceramic hawthorn carries this distinction with what can only be described as appropriate indifference. Denver Botanic Gardens stocks it. The hawthorn is unbothered.

What is a good going away gift?

A going away gift works best when it travels well and installs easily in the new location. The whitish blue ceramic hawthorn — 3 inches, ships in a gift box, hangs with one screw in 90 seconds — is the going away gift that arrives at the destination ready to be on whatever wall is available. The person who is leaving has a May birthday, or doesn't, but either way they are getting a ceramic flower stocked in Denver Botanic Gardens and SFMOMA that will be on their new wall within 90 seconds of unpacking.
