The 5-inch Boombastic is a glazed ceramic plant pot with a center drainage hole and a matching saucer, and by the time we reached the medium size the name had already gone to print and stuck. Changing it would have meant admitting the original story was not good enough, and the original story was excellent, so Boombastic stayed. Set beside the three-inch, the difference is not the glaze but the confidence, the look of a thing that has stopped explaining how it got its name.

The five-inch has had time to become something more considered than its origin suggests, more room for the glaze to do its work, more time for us to decide we genuinely liked the name we had panicked into using. Glazed ceramic holds moisture more evenly than raw terracotta, and no two pots resolve alike. It still sounds exactly like 1995. We continue to regard that as a feature rather than a confession.

Potting a plant in the Minute

  1. Place a 1-inch layer of small stones or LECA pebbles at the bottom of the pot. Optional, but it helps with airflow.
  2. Add well-draining potting mix appropriate to your plant. Not garden soil. We know your grandmother used garden soil. She was wrong about this one thing.
  3. Transplant from the nursery pot, leaving about 1 inch at the top for watering.
  4. Set the pot on the matching saucer.
  5. Water thoroughly until water runs out the drainage hole into the saucer. Empty the saucer once the plant has absorbed what it needs. This is the entire system.

Potting Tips

  1. Repot in the evening.
  2. Wait 1–2 days after watering, then repot.
  3. Buy potting mix. Not backyard dirt.
  4. Move the top layer of soil from the old pot into the new one. It's a little ecosystem.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger.
  6. Soil line sits an inch below the rim. Leca or small rocks at the bottom for drainage.

Boombastic at Five Inches: The Panic, Reconsidered

By the time the medium Boombastic came around, the name was no longer up for debate. It had gone to print under deadline pressure as a placeholder, and nobody changed it, because changing it would have meant conceding that the original story, the one about a song stuck in the studio and a clock running out, was somehow insufficient. It was not insufficient. It was the best naming story we had. We have noticed that the names we agonize over rarely land as well as the ones an emergency hands us, and we try not to think too hard about what that means.

The five-inch gave the glaze more room than the panic ever allowed, and with the pressure long gone we could finally look at the thing calmly and decide whether we actually liked it. We did. The extra surface lets the layered glaze stretch out and behave the way it could not at three inches, and the result feels deliberate in a way its origin absolutely was not. Each pot resolves on its own, since layered glaze keeps its own counsel. A center drainage hole and a matching saucer sit under the color, the dependable mechanics beneath a pot whose name was an act of pure improvisation. It still sounds like 1995, brash and a little ridiculous and entirely sure of itself. We have stopped apologizing for that and started treating it as the point.
