The 3-inch Matte Green is a glazed ceramic plant pot with a center drainage hole and a matching saucer, and it is proof we kept trying long after it stopped making commercial sense. We have always loved combining gloss and matte finishes, a preference that did not serve us well in the early years of this studio, when nobody else was particularly interested in a pot that could not decide on a single sheen. The early failures were instructive, mostly in teaching us how badly a half-committed sheen can go wrong before it goes right.

Glazed ceramic holds moisture more evenly than raw terracotta, and the finish resolves a little differently on every pot. We tried the matte-and-gloss idea anyway, and it failed, repeatedly, in ways we do not need to detail here. The three-inch Matte Green exists because we believed in the combination past the point of good business sense, and at this size you can see exactly what we were so stubborn about.

Potting a Plant in a Minute

  1. Place a 1-inch layer of small stones or LECA pebbles at the bottom of the pot. Optional, but it helps with airflow.
  2. Add well-draining potting mix appropriate to your plant. Not garden soil. We know your grandmother used garden soil. She was wrong about this one thing.
  3. Transplant from the nursery pot, leaving about ½ inch at the top for watering, in a 3-inch pot, every bit of space counts.
  4. Set the pot on the matching saucer.
  5. Water thoroughly until water runs out the drainage hole into the saucer. Empty the saucer once the plant has absorbed what it needs. This is the entire system.

Potting Tips

  1. Repot in the evening.
  2. Wait 1–2 days after watering, then repot.
  3. Buy potting mix. Not backyard dirt.
  4. Move the top layer of soil from the old pot into the new one. It's a little ecosystem.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger.
  6. Soil line sits an inch below the rim. Leca or small rocks at the bottom for drainage.

  2. Glazed pots are dipped and kiln-fired — they are sealed, durable, and not looking for trouble. No special cleaning products required.
  3. For pots with saucers empty the saucer periodically. Standing water in the saucer defeats the purpose of having a drainage hole, which is a thing we feel strongly about.
  4. Not frost-safe. Designed for indoor use and covered outdoor temperate weather use. Freezing temperatures are not recommended.

Matte Green: The Idea We Refused to Drop

We have always been drawn to the interplay of gloss and matte on a single pot, which sounds like a small aesthetic preference and was, for years, a genuine commercial liability. In the early days of the studio nobody wanted a finish that could not commit to one sheen. The pots did not sell. We made them anyway, and they failed, repeatedly, in ways that were educational at the time and are not worth reciting now. We have a long memory for the years this finish embarrassed us commercially, and a longer one for the exact moment the tide turned, which we replay more often than is healthy.

Matte Green is what survived that stubbornness. The three-inch is the most concentrated version of an idea we refused to abandon when abandoning it would have been the sensible move. Each pot resolves on its own, the matte body and its glossier passages catching light differently every time. A center drainage hole and a matching saucer sit underneath, the practical part beneath a finish we kept making out of conviction rather than strategy. We were early on this, which at the time felt like being wrong. It turns out there is a difference, and the small Matte Green is where we started to suspect it.

Potting a plant with Chive

  1. It's best to repot your plant in the evening. Trust us, we know.
  2. Repot 1–2 days after watering — keeps the same rhythm going and won't shock it.
  3. Potting soil is not the dirt from your backyard. Go buy good, nutrient-rich soil.
  4. The top layer of soil in your current pot should be the top layer in the new pot too. It's a little ecosystem your plant likes.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger than your existing pot. "It'll grow into it" is not correct, and you will kill it.
  6. Keep the soil line about an inch below the top of the pot. Add some leca or small rocks to the bottom for better aeration.
