Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

A thoughtful gift for a librarian shouldn't need much justification, and this particular Hawthorn — the second of two blue-and-white pieces sharing that name in the collection — mostly speaks for itself regardless. Naming things at the studio involves meetings and a shared document someone is perpetually mid-edit on; the hawthorn itself has never cared what it gets called, larger or smaller, whichever version lands at someone's door. Mounted for a nautical look, it holds its finish permanently, asking for no watering can and no fuss from whoever hangs it. A quiet, beautiful gift for a book lover works best when it makes no demands in return, asks for no shelf space beyond a single hook, and this piece never does. The studio's artisans have worked this way since the year Chive began, back in 2004. A rotation through the Huntington Library shop has included Chive work before. The naming meetings continue somewhere. The hawthorn remains entirely unbothered.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Ivory Chrysanthemum ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

Unique coastal decor, original flower designs in 200+ art galleries and institutions worldwide

There are two Blue White Hawthorns in this collection, and left to his own devices, one member of the studio would have simply called them Big and Bigger and closed the matter in a single afternoon rather than the several meetings it actually took to resolve. The studio has an entire process for naming things, involving group discussion, consensus-building, and a shared document that someone is perpetually in the middle of updating at any given time. That process is thorough. It is also, by most accounts, more exhausting than the naming decision itself probably warranted. The hawthorn in question — this particular one, the second of the pair — does not participate in any of that deliberation. It simply exists in blue and white, whichever size happens to be in front of you, completely indifferent to what the meetings eventually decided to call it. There's something almost instructive in that indifference. The studio spends real time and real disagreement arriving at a name, and the object itself never once notices the debate happened. It just sits there, glazed and finished, waiting for someone to hang it regardless of what the shared document says its official title is supposed to be.

Designed to Share the Same Room

Ivory Comanche Peony ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

Not every glaze decision gets made before the firing — some only reveal themselves once the kiln's had its say, and this one is a good example of that. This hawthorn shares its exact name with a sibling piece elsewhere in this same Nantucket set, though the Nantucket Tree Peony offers a useful comparison point for how differently two studio decisions can land.

Blue White Lexi Cornflower ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The naming overlap between this hawthorn and its sibling piece makes an interesting pairing point for anyone assembling a themed wall arrangement around the studio's own internal debates. Grouped with the Blue White Cosmos from the same firing sequence, the visual thread across contested-identity pieces becomes its own quiet through-line worth pointing out to guests. Chive Devo ceramic planter with ombre white to teal gradient holding an oxalis on a glass table indoor.

Modern and organic don't often share a shelf, but the Devo Planter's clean lines actually sharpen the contrast against this hawthorn's more debated, natural-looking surface rather than clashing with it outright. One is deliberate geometry through and through. The other resists being pinned down at all, even by its own name. Placed together, the difference becomes the point instead of a problem to solve.

The Safe Color Was Never Safe. — Coastal Collection.

Consensus at a small studio moves slower than anyone would prefer, especially when the disagreement is over something as small as a flower's name. That's been the case since Chive opened its doors back in 2004, and two decades hasn't sped the process up much. What has stayed consistent is the actual making — every piece still shaped and fired by hand, regardless of how long its naming meeting eventually runs. How long any single naming decision takes has never actually slowed down the making itself. This particular hawthorn moved through that same slow consensus process before its name was settled, made in a single afternoon while its name took several separate meetings to settle.

Frequently asked questions

What hardware is needed to hang a Blue White Hawthorn?

This particular Hawthorn mounts with one screw, no bracket kit involved at all — the back has a built-in point positioned to hang level without a helper standing by. A basic drill or a hammer and nail both work fine here. Most walls take under ten minutes from start to finish.

What is a thoughtful gift for a librarian?

A thoughtful gift for a librarian should feel specific rather than generic, and a permanently glazed hawthorn with an actual naming dispute behind it clears that bar easily. It's the kind of story worth mentioning when handing the gift over. Permanent, low-maintenance, and just unusual enough to be memorable in a good way.

Is a ceramic hawthorn a good librarian gift idea?

A librarian's desk or shelf tends to accumulate objects that get looked at daily, so anything given as a gift needs to earn its spot. This hawthorn does that by asking for nothing in return — no watering, no dusting schedule, no eventual replacement once it starts looking tired the way real branches do.

Does a blue and white hawthorn work as nautical decor?

Nautical decor works best when it doesn't lean too hard into obvious rope-and-anchor cliches scattered across every surface. This hawthorn keeps things subtle instead — blue and white glaze, an organic shape, nothing overtly thematic beyond the color palette itself. It fits a coastal room without turning it into a theme park.

Does a Blue White Hawthorn ship in a gift box?

This particular Hawthorn ships finished and padded well enough that the shipping box works as the gift box without modification. A card inside explains the mount in a few short lines. Nothing else needs to be purchased ahead of time before it's ready to open and hang. Setup takes about as long as reading the included card.

What is a quiet, beautiful gift for a book lover?

A quiet, beautiful gift for a book lover should ask nothing of them beyond appreciating it, and this hawthorn's fired glaze delivers on that with zero required maintenance. There's no wilting, no fading, no seasonal swap required down the line. That kind of low-demand permanence tends to suit a quieter personality especially well.

How long does a ceramic hawthorn last versus a fresh one?

A fresh-cut hawthorn branch holds its blooms for maybe a few days before dropping them entirely. This particular piece skips that decline altogether — the glaze and shape stay fixed exactly as fired, with no watering, no pruning, and with nothing eventually thrown out the way an actual branch would need to be.

Is a ceramic hawthorn a good gift for beach house decor?

Beach house decor needs to survive humidity, salt air, and long stretches of inconsistent attention far better than a live arrangement ever could in that environment. This hawthorn tolerates all of it without mildewing, wilting, or needing replacement after a single summer season. That durability matters more here than almost anywhere else.
