The Story Behind This Ornament

My father Cyrus kept a tin robot on his workbench for fifty years, a blue one from 1957 with a wind-up key that stopped working during the Johnson administration and was never repaired, because repairing it was never the point. The robot was there when he built our bookshelves, there when he fixed the neighbors' radios, there through every project that promised more than it delivered. He got it the Christmas he was nine, the year the future was arriving any minute, and I believe some part of him kept the appointment even after the future clearly wasn't going to. When I found this ornament — the same boxy chassis, the same dial face, the same blue that appeared on appliances and concept cars and nothing in nature — I bought it without checking the price, which would have disappointed Cyrus and delighted the nine-year-old inside him. He placed it on the tree the way he did everything at the bench: precisely, once, no adjustments. It caught the lamplight and he looked at it longer than he looks at most things. The original robot still stands on the workbench, key frozen, mission ongoing. This one hangs twelve feet away every December. They are, he says, in contact.

About Chive Studio

Chive dates to 2004, and the studio treats period detail as a promise to the buyer: if a design says 1950s, the blue has to agree with the decade, the dials have to survive close inspection, and the antenna has to look ready for signals that never came. Our painters keep reference files for exactly this reason — photographs, advertisements, the occasional borrowed tin toy that gets returned reluctantly. An era is a set of facts, and the difference between right and approximately right stays invisible until the ornament stands next to the real thing, at which point it becomes the only thing visible.
