Pink Boombox Ornament

My niece Josephine has never owned a cassette tape in her life and has no interest in starting now — she wanted this ornament entirely for the color, full stop, the same way she'd pick out a jacket or a phone case. That put a different kind of pressure on the studio than the usual nostalgia pieces get: nobody was going to forgive an off pink the way they might forgive an inexact dial. Early batches came out either too pale or too purple, the glaze shifting under the kiln's heat in a way plain red and blue never did. The chemist reworked the mix three times before the color held true edge to edge, matte-free and unfading, on a curved glass surface that wants to scatter light rather than hold a flat tone. Josephine's arrived, and her only comment was that it matched her phone case exactly, which she considers the entire point of owning anything. She hung it front and center, angled so the color catches the tree lights directly. She has still never asked what a cassette actually does. The studio keeps a running list of colors that fought back before holding true, this pink near the top of it — Josephine just knows it's the one she wanted, which is, in the end, the entire job.

The studio has mixed its own glazes by hand since 2004, and pink has always been the hardest color to get right, prone to going chalky or shifting toward lavender the moment the kiln's heat sets in. A boombox this saturated meant solving that problem specifically rather than reaching for a safer, paler pink the way a less stubborn studio might. The color had to read as a decision, not a compromise. Three reworked batches later, it holds evenly across a curved surface without a single patch of drift toward gray or purple. Getting a color exactly right matters here as much as getting a shape right, and this piece is the proof the studio keeps on hand.
