There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The Pink Lips Ornament renders a small, glossy pair of hand-painted glass lips, the kind of object that's either a beauty symbol or a communication device depending on the day, and has quietly managed to be both for far longer than anyone has kept track of. It hangs light on the branch but reads instantly from clear across the room, which is more than most tree decorations of its size can manage. There's usually one person at every table who has the right words at the right moment, the line that resets a tense dinner or lands the joke nobody else quite could land, and they rarely get thanked for it in the moment it actually happens. Hang this for that person specifically, the one who should be in the room for every hard conversation whether they realize it or not. A TIFF documentary about it would run four minutes flat: one subject, one perfect delivery, and no notes from anyone in the room.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My aunt Renata is the person our family deploys when something has to be said and nobody else can say it. She delivered the toast at my parents' anniversary that made my father cry in front of his brothers, and she delivered the single sentence at my grandmother's funeral that let the whole room finally exhale. I have watched her reset a Thanksgiving with nine words. Nobody thanks her in the moment, because the moment moves on — that is what her sentences are for, moving moments on — and Renata has never once pointed this out, which is itself a kind of eloquence. When Renata opened the box and found the lips — glossy, pink, permanently mid-sentence — she looked at it for a while and then said, well, somebody noticed, and I said somebody did. She hung it at the front of her tree, where the light from the hallway catches the shine, and at her holiday party I watched three separate guests lean in to look at it and then glance at Renata, making the connection on their own. She let them. She refills drinks while people figure out what she is. The lips hang there all December, saying it for her.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Funny Christmas Ornaments

Our Funny collection hangs the household's sense of humor at eye level, one hand-painted glass punchline at a time. The Pink Sneaker Glass Ornament keeps that same energy going one branch away.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. The gloss reads freshly applied from a foot away and stays that way permanently. The rest of the funny ornament collection carries the same easy confidence.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

The right words last longer than the moment; the right flowers should too. Chive's ceramic flowers are hand-built to permanence — blooms that keep their full color without water or maintenance, season after season. They were this studio's first love and remain its best-known work. Long after the ornaments are boxed and the needles swept, the flowers go on saying the thing worth saying, which is: somebody here has taste.

About Chive Studio

In 2004, Chive began with ceramic flowers, and the studio's pigment shelf has been growing ever since — a wall of labeled jars that our painters guard like a spice cabinet. The pink on these lips comes from a pigment we buy from the same small supplier we found in our first year, in quantities that embarrass us at ordering time and justify themselves completely by December. Certain colors cannot be substituted; the painters have tested the alternatives and registered strong objections to each one. So the jar gets reordered, the supplier gets a holiday card, and the gloss stays exactly the gloss it has always been. Some relationships in this business are transactional. That one is a marriage.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a Pink Lips ornament online?

You can buy the Pink Lips ornament online right here, hand-painted glass with a permanent gloss. I ordered the first one for my aunt Renata, the person our family sends in when something must be said perfectly. It shipped nested in tissue and arrived flawless. She had it hung within the hour. Front of the tree.

Is the Pink Lips ornament right for yankee swap?

Yes — the Pink Lips ornament is exactly right for yankee swap. At my cousins' game, half the table assumed it broke the spending cap and disqualified itself from picking accordingly, which my aunt Renata announced was incorrect, citing the rules and the receipt. She then took it home under full legality. The rules committee was her. It usually is.

Is the Pink Lips ornament a good hostess gift idea?

The Pink Lips ornament is a lovely hostess gift idea for anyone whose gatherings run on conversation. I gave one to a friend whose dinner party my aunt Renata famously un-sank last spring, and she hung it that same night, before the dishes were dry. She calls it insurance. The wine I brought is long gone. The lips stay.

Is the Pink Lips ornament hand painted glass or plastic?

The Pink Lips ornament is hand painted glass, not plastic — the gloss is layered brushwork sealed to a permanent wet-look shine. Renata asked what the finish was sealed with and then listened to the entire answer, which from Renata is a standing ovation. My lipstick, she noted, survives one coffee, while this survives estates. She plans accordingly.

Is the Pink Lips ornament too heavy for tree branches?

The Pink Lips ornament is not too heavy for tree branches — hollow blown glass, 3.15 inches wide and 2.65 inches tall, lighter than most baubles its size. My aunt weighed it in one palm, approximately, the way she weighs a sentence before saying it aloud. It hangs light and speaks up regardless. Very much like its owner.

What is the best way to store the Pink Lips ornament?

The best way to store the Pink Lips ornament is wrapped in acid-free tissue with its own compartment, away from temperature swings. Renata gives hers a dedicated box, labeled, because nothing is permitted to rub against that gloss between seasons. I adopted the system the following year. My gloss is likewise intact. She checks.

What pairs well with the Pink Lips ornament?

The Pink Sneaker Glass pairs beautifully with the Pink Lips ornament — a coordinated pink corner with two different senses of humor. My sister runs both plus the Rainbow Platform Boot as a trio, and her guests gravitate there without being told. Renata visited once and approved the arrangement out loud, which my sister has quoted ever since. That corner is canon.

Can the Pink Lips ornament be shipped directly as a gift?

The Pink Lips ornament travels in protective tissue inside a rigid carton rather than a gift box, because arrival matters more than packaging theater. Renata's came through winter transit flawless, gloss intact, which she confirmed at the door before greetings. I handed it over with a card in my other hand. The card said you know why. She did.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
