There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

This whale ornament comes in a shade of pink no actual whale has ever worn, rendered for the tree in hand-finished blown glass. Painters apply that improbable color entirely by hand after the glass is shaped, and a metal hanging loop finishes the piece, generously sized to anchor a lower, sturdier branch. A pink whale does not occur in nature, a fact the pink whale is aware of and does not find remotely limiting, having simply claimed the color without waiting for anyone's permission. That is either the whale's clear right, or, considered honestly, the correct approach to any situation where the available options fall short of what you actually want. Hang this for whoever decided early that the given choices were only a starting point, and has been picking their own ever since. TIFF has hosted plenty of bold, unauthorized color choices on screen, and would approve of this one completely.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My daughter Maren went through a phase around age seven where she insisted every animal she drew needed a color it had never actually been assigned by nature, on the stated grounds that nature had clearly not finished making all the decisions yet and somebody ought to help it along. Her whales were pink, her lions were teal, her foxes were an alarming shade of orange nobody could quite place, and she defended every choice with the complete, unshakeable confidence only a seven-year-old fully possesses, refusing every gentle correction offered by well-meaning adults who should have known better than to try. Landing on the right shade for this one took three test batches, since too pale read as washed-out and too bright read as neon rather than considered, and the result got closer to a considered choice than an accident. We wanted it to look chosen rather than default. Maren, now considerably older, still maintains that her seven-year-old self had the correct instinct about color and the rest of us were simply behind, a position she has never once walked back. This one's for whoever in your life has never needed permission to pick their own palette, and never asked for it either.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ornaments Are a Great Gift. We Have Opinions About the Rest.

More Animal Christmas Ornaments

Our Animal collection is a census of the creatures who actually run our households, taken in hand-painted glass. This one claims its branch in a color nobody asked for, and the Happy Dino ornament roars quietly a few branches down.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. That color survives a close look, chosen on purpose rather than landed on by accident. More creatures running this household exactly the way they please wait in our Animal Christmas Ornaments .

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Glass runs the show for one season on the tree. Our ceramic flower collection run the show for the other eleven, holding whatever color they were made in without asking permission from nature or anyone else in the room. Someone who already believes in choosing their own palette might appreciate a flower that never fades from the shade it started in, holding its chosen color for good.

About Chive Studio

Chive Studio has treated glass since 2004 the way most companies treat porcelain: as something worth getting exactly right, humor and invented colors both fully included in that same standard. Garden pots, ceramic flowers, and vases claim most of the calendar's real estate, seeds arriving right on schedule every spring, and then the weather turns and the entire studio converts to glass, shaped around whatever the household actually loves best that season. We give a household full permission to invent the colors nature apparently forgot to offer, because a tree stocked in only expected colors says considerably less about the people underneath it than one that takes a few genuine chances.

Pink Whale Ornament

Whale of a Time

The pink whale is beyond adorable. My daughter keeps pointing at it and saying it’s her favrit. It adds such a cheerful splash of color among all the greens and reds.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a whale ornament online?

You can buy this whale ornament directly at chive.com — hand-blown glass in a pink no whale has ever been issued. My daughter Maren, whose seven-year-old drawings started this whole color philosophy, saw the finished piece and said it was about time. About time nature caught up, she meant. She's been waiting.

Would the Pink Whale ornament make a great secret santa pick?

It's a secret santa standout — the color gets a reaction before anyone registers the animal. Maren watched one get unwrapped at a school exchange and reported that the room made a sound, her exact words, which is the metric she now applies to all gifts. This one makes the sound. Reliably.

Who would love the Pink Whale ornament as a gift?

It's for whoever picks their own palette without asking permission — the person who was told whales aren't pink and heard it as a dare. Maren defended pink whales at age seven against a table of adults and has never once walked it back, and she was right, and here's the proof. The proof hangs well.

What material is the Pink Whale ornament made of?

It's hand-blown, hand-painted glass, the pink applied entirely by hand after the glass cools — nothing printed, nothing dipped. The shade took three test batches to look chosen rather than accidental. Maren reviewed all three test batches personally and rejected the first two without hesitation. Batch three matched her crayon. Case closed.

What size is the Pink Whale christmas ornament?

It measures 5.51 inches long, 2.36 wide, and 3.74 tall — genuinely big, built to anchor a lower branch. Maren gives hers the lowest, sturdiest branch and calls it the whale's territory, which the rest of the tree apparently respects. Nothing else hangs within a foot. The whale earned it.

How should I store the Pink Whale ornament after christmas?

Wrap it in tissue given the size, store it upright in a padded box, and keep pressure off the paint. Maren retires hers each January with a short ceremony she invented and refuses to describe, and the whale has emerged flawless three years running. The ceremony evidently works, whatever it involves. We don't ask.

Do you have more animal ornaments like the Pink Whale?

More live at /collections/animal-christmas-ornaments — the full census of household creatures, all in hand-painted glass. Maren audits the page carefully each year for animals wearing colors nature never assigned them, which has been her one collecting criterion since age seven. The teal lion remains her white whale. So to speak.

Does the Pink Whale ornament come in a gift box?

It does not come in a gift box — it arrives in serious protective transit packaging, built for the journey rather than the moment. Maren approved, noting that a whale should travel in something sturdy, given the size of the cargo. Wrapping falls to you if it's a gift. She recommends pink paper. Obviously.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
