There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

A horse ornament belongs on the branch where it catches light first, and this one — crowned, pink, standing at full attention — earns the spot without argument. Chive's Princess Horse is hand-blown glass shaped by a gaffer's breath into a creature that manages to look both regal and entirely approachable, the crown resting on its head the way confidence rests on someone who stopped needing permission a long time ago. The hand-painted detail starts at the hooves, climbs through a body glazed in blush and lavender, and finishes at a mane that catches every nearby bulb. Hang it low enough for a child to study or high enough to surprise a guest reaching for an hors d'oeuvre — the horse does not mind where it stands because the horse already knows what it is. Chive launched in 2004 and now supplies ornaments to the Royal Ontario Museum — this princess earned its place on that résumé and on your branch.

The Story Behind This Ornament

The horse with the crown did not need the crown. This is important to understand before you hang it anywhere, because the horse had already decided what it was long before anyone arrived with headwear, and the acceptance of the crown was an act of generosity toward the people around it who needed the visual confirmation of something the horse had settled internally years ago. My neighbor Margaret has this quality. She walks into the room already knowing the outcome of whatever is about to happen, and the room adjusts to her, not the other way around, and she lets it happen without comment because commenting would diminish the thing she is doing, which is standing completely still while the world rearranges itself in her direction. The Princess Horse ornament is for the Margaret in your life, or for you if you are a Margaret, and if you are a Margaret you already know it and do not need me to tell you, but I am telling you anyway because the tree deserves the horse and the horse deserves the branch and Margaret deserves something that understands what she has been doing quietly, completely, without requiring anyone to say it out loud. Hang it where she can see it. She will know what it means.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Animal Christmas Ornaments

Our Animal collection is a census of the creatures who actually run our households, taken in hand-painted glass. The Hedgehog Ornament joined the herd and has not left, and neither will anything else you find on the shelf.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. Browse the full Animal Christmas Ornaments collection and find the rest of the herd — every creature is mouth-blown glass painted by the same artists who made this horse stand at attention.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

When the ornaments are packed away, the walls stay bare until they do not have to be. Chive's ceramic flowers mount with no water, no maintenance, and no expiration date, which means the wall gets a permanent installation that looks alive twelve months a year without asking anything of you beyond the initial nail. Visit Ceramic Flowers to see the full collection — every bloom is hand-painted and ready to hang the day it arrives at your door.

About Chive Studio

Chive started in 2004 with a conviction that home décor should look like someone specific made it for someone specific, not like it was extruded by a machine that did not know whose living room it was headed to. Every ornament begins as a gather of molten glass at the end of a blowpipe, turned by a gaffer whose breath is the first design decision and whose hands make every subsequent one. The Princess Horse is painted by artists who work from reference and instinct in equal measure, which is how the crown ends up looking earned rather than placed. Chive believes holiday décor should carry the evidence of the hand that made it, because the hand is the difference between an ornament and a souvenir, and the difference matters most on the branch where you hang your best things.

German Glass Ornaments: How They're Made, and How to Keep Them Alive

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a horse ornament for the christmas tree?

Yes, the Princess Horse ornament is a hand-blown glass horse designed specifically for tree display. My niece spotted it on a bottom branch last December, declared it the best horse she had ever seen, and spent the rest of the evening introducing it to every adult who walked past. The hook sits sturdy on outer branches and the crown stays put permanently.

Would the Princess Horse ornament win a white elephant exchange?

The Princess Horse would dominate a white elephant exchange because it is the gift that makes everyone in the circle reconsider their own contribution. A friend brought a glass animal to our office swap and the person who unwrapped it guarded it through three consecutive steal rounds with increasing intensity. Nobody attempted the fourth round.

Is the Princess Horse ornament a good gift idea?

It is an excellent gift for anyone who appreciates handmade glass or horses or both, which covers more people than you might initially expect. My colleague Janet received a glass animal ornament for her birthday and hung it that same evening and texted a photo within the hour. The speed of that sequence tells you everything.

What is the Princess Horse ornament made from?

The Princess Horse is made from hand-blown glass shaped by a gaffer using a traditional blowpipe technique. Each piece starts as a molten gather and gets its final form from breath and gravity and a painter who adds the crown, mane, and blush tones entirely by hand. No two are perfectly identical, which is the point.

What size is the Princess Horse ornament out of the box?

The Princess Horse measures 2.44 inches long, 2.64 inches wide, and 3.35 inches tall, which places it in the mid-size range for tree ornaments — visible enough to anchor a section of branch but compact enough not to overwhelm the neighbors. My aunt would call it a statement piece. She is correct about it.

How do I keep the Princess Horse ornament safe in storage?

Wrap it in acid-free tissue, place it in a compartmented ornament box, and store the box somewhere with stable temperature — a closet shelf beats an attic or garage every time. My family uses the same egg-crate containers for twenty years running and nothing has cracked. Patience during packing is the entire strategy here.

Do you have more animal ornaments like the Princess Horse?

Chive makes a full collection of Animal Christmas Ornaments that includes creatures from hedgehogs to whales to sea turtles and beyond, all produced in hand-blown glass by the same artisans. The collection keeps growing because the animal kingdom is vast and glass remains endlessly patient. Browse and expand the herd.

Does the Princess Horse ornament ship gift ready?

The Princess Horse ships in secure protective packaging designed to survive transit, not in a decorative gift box. This means the ornament arrives safely but the wrapping responsibility is yours to handle. My brother considers this an advantage because he has firm opinions about wrapping paper. The horse arrives intact.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
