There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The Rainbow Bolt Ornament is a hand-painted glass lightning bolt that has decided storms should also be beautiful, striped in full spectrum across 3.54 inches of height, 1.57 inches of length, and a lean 0.79 inches of width. The zigzag is pulled from hot glass in one continuous motion, because any hesitation at all softens the angles, and the rainbow bands are painted in seven separate passes once it cools. Some objects are excessive. Some are exactly right. This one files confidently under both. Felix enters every room the way this bolt enters a tree: at full brightness, unapologetic, and somehow improving the lighting for everyone else present. Rooms are measurably different after he has been in them. So are trees after this has been on them. Hang it where it can do that work. Think of it as a TIFF red carpet compressed into something that weighs less than a letter.

The Story Behind This Ornament

Felix enters rooms the way weather enters a forecast: announced, unavoidable, and dressed for the occasion. He wore a sequined jacket to my book club, which does not have a dress code, and by the end of the evening two members had asked where he got it and one had ordered her own. Rooms are different after Felix has been in them. Brighter, mostly. Louder, certainly. He does not try to be noticed, which is the crucial distinction; he simply operates at full brightness and lets the rest of the room adjust its exposure. When we pulled this lightning bolt from the glass, one continuous motion, no hesitation, and striped it in seven painted passes, I set one aside for him before it had fully cooled. He opened the box, held it up against the window light, and said, finally, an ornament with the courage of its convictions. It hangs on his tree between two tasteful silver balls, which he keeps there, he says, for contrast. Guests notice the bolt first. Guests notice the bolt only. The silver balls have accepted their role. Felix maintains that every tree needs one object that refuses to whisper. His has never whispered once.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Felix's decorating philosophy does not observe an off-season, which makes him a natural for our ceramic flowers. Chive glazes them in saturations that hold their nerve straight through the beige months — a red that stays red, a pink with the bolt's own conviction. He fills a tall vase with them every January, the day the tree comes down, a ceremony he calls the handoff. The brightness never actually leaves. It just changes rooms.

About Chive Studio

Chive mixes its own colors and has since 2004, when the first ceramic flowers demanded a red the team could describe only by pointing at things. The library now runs to hundreds of glazes and paints, each one filed with the piece it was built for, and saturation is treated as a design decision rather than a decoration. A color either commits or it goes back on the shelf. The rainbow on this bolt drew seven entries from that library, carefully sequenced so that no single band dulls its neighbor. Timid color is easy and forgettable. Committed color takes a library and a steady hand. We keep both of them here on the premises.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell a Rainbow Bolt ornament for christmas trees?

We do — a hand-painted glass lightning bolt striped in a full seven-pass rainbow, pulled from hot glass in one continuous motion. Felix, our most reliable field-tester of conspicuous objects, reports that his has already prompted three separate doorway conversations this season alone. It is loud, precise, and completely committed. Exactly as designed.

Would the Rainbow Bolt ornament win a white elephant exchange?

It tends to end the exchange rather than win it — Felix's host had it hanging on their own tree before dessert, mid-party, against every rule of the format. A white elephant gift is supposed to stay in play; this one gets adopted on sight and leaves the game entirely. Felix considers this the highest possible score. The scoreboard disagrees, quietly.

Is the Rainbow Bolt ornament a good hostess gift idea?

For the right host it is the best one — specifically the host whose home has a point of view and whose parties have a soundtrack. Felix brings one wherever the decor shows courage, and he claims a perfect record of delighted recipients, though his sample admittedly skews bold. Match the bolt to the host. The bold ones exist everywhere.

Is the Rainbow Bolt ornament hand painted glass or plastic?

Hand-painted glass, without question — the seven rainbow bands go on in seven separate passes, and the zigzag itself is pulled in one motion because hesitation softens the angles. Felix held his to the window on arrival and pronounced the stripes honest, his word for visibly human work. Plastic cannot hesitate or commit in that way. This one committed.

Is the Rainbow Bolt ornament too heavy for tree branches?

Not remotely — at 3.54 inches tall and a lean 0.79 inches wide, it weighs less than a letter. The zigzag spreads what little weight there is, so even slim branches hold it without sagging or spinning. Felix has hung his from growth he describes as decorative at best. No sag, no drama.

What is the best way to store the Rainbow Bolt ornament?

Sleeve it in tissue along its full zigzag length and lay it flat in a compartmented box — the points want support, not pressure. Felix stores his in a sunglasses case lined with felt, which fits so precisely he suspects fate. Keep it somewhere temperate and dim until November. The brightness keeps without maintenance.

What pairs well with the Rainbow Bolt ornament?

Company from our Funny christmas ornaments keeps the energy honest — Felix pairs his bolt with the Pink Sneaker Glass, an object with an equally uncompromising sense of self. The two of them hold one side of Felix's tree like a small argument the tree is winning. Humor hangs best in clusters. His cluster is thriving.

Can the Rainbow Bolt ornament be shipped directly as a gift?

Yes — we ship straight to your recipient in secure protective transit packaging; there is no gift box inside, so the wrapping remains your moment. Felix has sent four this way, each with a note reading simply, you know why. All four arrived intact and were correctly understood. He is already shopping for a fifth. Lightning, apparently, repeats.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
