There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

A rainbow ornament in hand-blown glass — an arc of color painted stripe by stripe onto shaped glass, each band applied individually and the whole piece finished with its hook ready for the branch. The result is a Christmas tree ornament that catches light the way an actual rainbow does, except this one stays. My aunt hung a glass rainbow on her tree the year everything had been terrible, and when she was asked about it she told the room: because I needed the reminder, and it went quiet in the specific way rooms go quiet when someone has said the exact right thing. Everyone has a year that needed a rainbow. Some years the decoration is the declaration. This is the ornament you hang when the color itself is the message. File it alongside the most vivid specimens in the Royal Ontario Museum's collection — small, bright, and doing more work than its size suggests.

The Story Behind This Ornament

The rainbow appeared over the parking lot of a grocery store in New Jersey at approximately four-fifteen on a Tuesday in October, and the woman who told me about it said she sat in her car for eleven minutes watching it because she had nowhere to be for the first time in three years and the rainbow seemed like something she should not rush past. She did not take a photograph. She said she considered it and decided the photograph would not be the thing — that the thing was sitting there, in a parking lot, watching colors that had arranged themselves in the sky for no particular reason other than physics and timing and a willingness to look up. We designed this ornament with that kind of weight in mind. It is an arc of color on glass, seven bands painted individually, and it does what a rainbow does: it arrives after something difficult and reminds you that the light was always there, it just needed the right conditions to show itself. The glass carries the color differently depending on where the tree sits in the room. Morning light gives you one version. Evening lamp light gives you another. The rainbow adjusts. It always has.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Funny Christmas Ornaments

Our Funny collection hangs the household's sense of humor at eye level, one hand-painted glass punchline at a time. The rainbow arrived in color; the Seafoam Sneaker ornament arrived in seafoam and questions.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

The rainbow goes up in December and comes down in January; a ceramic flower stays put regardless of what the calendar says. Chive's ceramic flowers are crafted from clay into permanent stems — no water needed, no wilting possible, no expiration to track. If the rainbow creates the conditions, the blooms reward the room year-round. Same studio, different season, equally lasting once placed.

About Chive Studio

Chive Studio started in 2004 with a handful of designs and the stubborn idea that color was a serious material, not a decorative afterthought. For three seasons we make flower stems from ceramic, plus pots, vases, and packets of seeds — then winter brings glass ornaments modeled on the real contents of people's lives, not the ones a catalog imagines. Each piece is drawn up in our own workspace, blown from glass by mouth, and painted entirely by hand, because that process gives every ornament the weight it needs to hold a branch properly. We think a tree should look like the people underneath it: vivid, specific, and completely unapologetic about what brings them joy.

Rainbow Ornament

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a rainbow ornament for the christmas tree?

Chive carries this rainbow ornament at chive.com and ships it across the country. My coworker found it while looking for something she could not quite describe and said this was it, which is either the best product review or the vaguest. The colors show up vivid out of the box. Ships quickly.

Is the Rainbow ornament right for yankee swap?

It is a strong yankee swap pick because the rainbow appeals to everyone and offends nobody, which is a rare combination in a gift exchange and an even rarer one on a tree. The person who unwraps it will hold it up and the room will agree, which almost never happens at a yankee swap. Consensus is the gift.

Is the Rainbow ornament a good gift idea?

It makes an excellent gift for anyone who responds to color, which is most people, and especially for anyone who has had a difficult year and could use something vivid on their tree. My neighbor gave one to her sister after a long winter and the sister hung it at the front of the tree where visitors see it first. Statement placement.

What material is the Rainbow ornament made of?

The Rainbow ornament is mouth-blown glass, shaped over an open flame, with each color band painted on by hand using the traditional method. The glass has a weight and clarity that photographs approximate but holding it confirms. It is not plastic, not resin, not printed — it is the real material doing real work. You can tell immediately.

What size is the Rainbow ornament out of the box?

It measures 3.27 inches long, 0.79 inches wide, and 2.76 inches tall — compact enough to tuck among branches without crowding but vivid enough that you spot it from across the room. My uncle hung his near a window and the morning light turns the whole corner into a color lesson. Scale is modest. Impact endures.

How do I keep the Rainbow ornament safe in storage?

Wrap it gently in tissue or soft fabric and lay it in a container with a lid, preferably padded and away from heavier ornaments that could shift in the box. The glass is durable for what it is but appreciates a thoughtful January. I use a small compartmented box with dividers. The rainbow keeps its shape. Storage rewards patience.

What other funny christmas ornaments do you make?

Chive makes a full collection of funny ornaments including sneakers in seafoam, high heels in magenta, lightning bolts in rainbow, and fire hydrants that exist purely because someone decided they should. The category is broad on purpose — funny means whatever makes your household laugh, and the tree should reflect that. Browse and discover your punchline.

Does the Rainbow ornament come in a gift box?

It does not come in a gift box — it ships in sturdy protective packaging designed to keep the glass safe in transit, not to serve as wrapping. Plan on a minute with tissue paper and the ribbon of your choice. At under four inches across, it wraps quickly and fits easily in a stocking. You handle the reveal.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
