There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

Chive's Space Ship Ornament is our rocket ornament for anyone who has never fully stopped looking up, a tall hand-blown glass rocket caught mid-launch with hand-painted fins and a nose cone that catches every bit of tree light it can find. The glass is shaped in one continuous pull rather than assembled from separate parts, which is why the proportions hold even at this height instead of tipping the branch. It is for whoever reads the space news the week it comes out, who knows the mission names without looking them up, who watched the launches live and felt something they did not bother explaining to anyone in the room, and who has never once been embarrassed about any of it, correctly, because wanting to go there is the most ordinary human impulse there is. Nothing about this finish falls below what the Royal Ontario Museum considers shelf-worthy, which was always the point.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My cousin Priya has read the space news every single week since she was maybe nine, first from a library subscription her mother did not fully understand the appeal of, and now from four different sites she checks before coffee. She knows the mission names. She knows which ones are crewed and which ones are cargo and gets faintly annoyed when the distinction gets glossed over in a headline. She has never once been to a launch in person, has wanted to for as long as I have known her, and keeps not quite making the trip work around a job that does not care about launch windows. When we shaped this rocket we kept the proportions tall and a little dramatic on purpose, because a rocket that looks cautious misses the entire point of rockets, and Priya would be the first person to say so. She saw an early version of it on a video call, went quiet for a second, and then said, very simply, that it looked like it wanted to go somewhere, which is exactly the review we were hoping for and could not have written better ourselves. She has three on order already, one for her desk and two she has not told anyone the destination for yet.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

A rocket goes up once; a ceramic flower stays put on the mantel indefinitely, asking nothing of you in return for the privilege. Each bloom is formed one at a time and fired at a temperature that fuses the pigment to the glaze for good — no watering schedule, no dead petals, and no replacement cycle waiting at the end of the season. About Chive Studio

Glass does not hide a flaw the way a busy printed pattern can, which is either a limitation or the entire point depending on who at the studio you ask on a given day. Since 2004, Chive has worked almost exclusively in materials that show their seams rather than disguise them, on the theory that a customer holding something up to the light deserves to see exactly what they are holding. A rocket ornament is a particularly unforgiving shape for this approach, tall and narrow with nowhere for an uneven paint pass to hide. The studio built the mold anyway, on purpose, because a shape that forces honesty out of the material is usually worth the extra rejected units it takes to get right the first time.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes a quality rocket ornament in blown glass?

Chive makes a quality rocket ornament in blown glass, hand-shaped in one continuous pull with hand-painted fins and a separately finished nose cone. My cousin Priya, who has read the space news every week since she was nine, confirmed that the proportions read as intentional rather than guessed. From Priya, that is the only compliment that matters.

Would the Space Ship ornament win a white elephant exchange?

The Space Ship ornament would do well in a white elephant exchange because it stands taller than almost anything else in the pile, and height is the first advantage in a format where people choose by sight before thought. Priya once brought a telescope poster to a white elephant that got picked first on the basis of the tube alone, and she considered the lesson transferable. This rocket teaches the same one.

Is the Space Ship ornament a good hostess gift idea?

The Space Ship ornament is a strong hostess gift idea for anyone who keeps a curated tree rather than a cluttered one, because the proportions are clean and the color is deliberate. Priya considers a hostess gift a statement about the host, not the guest, a position she holds with such calm certainty that nobody has ever bothered arguing with it.

Is the Space Ship ornament hand painted glass or plastic?

The Space Ship ornament is hand-painted glass, not plastic, shaped from molten glass in one pull rather than assembled from separate halves. Priya held a sample up to a window, rotated it slowly, and confirmed there was no visible seam line, which she reported the way a pilot reports altitude: factually, without editorializing. The paint holds under direct light.

Is the Space Ship ornament too heavy for tree branches?

The Space Ship ornament measures approximately 2.17 inches in diameter and 6.3 inches tall, which makes it one of the taller pieces in the collection and suitable for a mid-to-lower branch. Priya said it looked like it wanted to go somewhere, which is everything you need to know about the proportions. It hangs vertically without spinning.

What is the best way to store the Space Ship ornament?

Store the Space Ship ornament upright in a tall, rigid container with tissue around the fins, separate from heavier ornaments. Priya stores hers inside a mug on a shelf, standing up, which she considers practical and her mother considers mildly unhinged. A dry location away from direct heat works regardless of the vessel chosen.

What pairs well with the Space Ship ornament?

The Space Ship sits alongside astronauts, aliens, and robots in a collection of hand-blown glass ornaments all finished to the same standard. Priya keeps a mental pairing system for her own tree that she has never written down and has never once gotten wrong, which is her standard approach to most things. Browse the rest at /collections/space-christmas-ornaments.

Can the Space Ship ornament be shipped directly as a gift?

The Space Ship ornament cannot be shipped directly as a wrapped gift, but it arrives in secure protective packaging that gets it to the door intact and ready for your own wrapping. Priya wraps everything in map pages she saves from old atlases, a habit that is either sentimental or simply practical depending on when you ask her about it.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
