The Virago Large Style E is a large porcelain plant pot with a center drainage hole and detachable saucer, built for plants that have stopped fitting on a windowsill. It belongs to a line Chive made in white first, on principle, because color kept being ignored. The white sold out. Color followed anyway, and Style E now comes in White, Black, Blue Grey, Olive and Soft Pink.

Style E is the second of three textured patterns in the Large, pressed into a dense matte finish that reads differently in morning and evening light. It comes in 6, 7, 8 and 10 inch sizes, each about as tall as it is wide, which suits a bird of paradise, a large snake plant or a ZZ plant that has filled its nursery pot. The weight of porcelain keeps tall plants steady. The saucer keeps your floors out of it.

Potting Tips

  1. Repot in the evening.
  2. Wait 1–2 days after watering, then repot.
  3. Buy potting mix. Not backyard dirt.
  4. Move the top layer of soil from the old pot into the new one. It's a little ecosystem.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger.
  6. Soil line sits an inch below the rim. Leca or small rocks at the bottom for drainage.

Pot Care instructions
  1. Dishwasher-safe. Can also be hand-washed with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
  2. Glazed pots are dipped and fired in the kiln — they are sealed, durable, and not looking for trouble. No special cleaning products required.
  3. For pots with saucers empty the saucer periodically. Standing water in the saucer defeats the purpose of having a drainage hole, which is a thing we feel strongly about.
  4. Not frost-safe. Designed for indoor use and covered outdoor temperate weather use. Freezing temperatures are not recommended.

Virago 3.5" Porcelain Pot With Drainage Hole And Saucer - Chive Ceramics Studio - Pots - Chive Ceramics Studio

Porcelain, Because Tall Plants Fall Over

The Large Viragos arrived in 2022, years after the smaller ones had made their case in white. We designed the line to prove a point about color, and the market responded by asking for the same pot, only bigger. We are not proud people. We made it bigger.

The problem with a large plant is physics. Leaves grow up and out, roots stay where they are, and eventually the whole arrangement leans toward the window like it is trying to leave. A light pot loses that argument. Porcelain, fired dense at 6 to 10 inches, wins it. Style E carries its own textured pattern, so the surface has depth up close and reads as calm from across the room, which is how most people see a floor plant anyway.

The drainage hole sits in the center, where water actually collects, and the saucer detaches for easy cleaning. We spent an unreasonable amount of time on that saucer. It is the part nobody photographs and everybody uses. If the Large looks simple, that is because the complicated parts were settled long before it left the studio, after more rounds of revision than any of us would like to count.

Potting a plant with Chive

  1. It's best to repot your plant in the evening. Trust us, we know.
  2. Repot 1–2 days after watering — keeps the same rhythm going and won't shock it.
  3. Potting soil is not the dirt from your backyard. Go buy good, nutrient-rich soil.
  4. The top layer of soil in your current pot should be the top layer in the new pot too. It's a little ecosystem your plant likes.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger than your existing pot. "It'll grow into it" is not correct, and you will kill it.
  6. Keep the soil line about an inch below the top of the pot. Add some leca or small rocks to the bottom for better aeration.

The Ultimate Repotting Guide

For those who have killed a plant. Or several. Or, frankly, many.

Before you put a plant into your new pot, you have to get it out of the nursery pot — a process that ends badly more often than any gardening influencer will admit. We wrote a full guide: when to repot (early spring, and not when you're feeling impulsive in October), which soil to use, how to tell your plant is root-bound, and how to avoid the three mistakes that kill perfectly healthy plants within a week of a well-intentioned repotting.

Longwood Gardens Carries It. Brooklyn Too.

Chive Studio has designed ceramic flowers and plant pots in Toronto since 2004. Each design goes through more drafts than anyone budgets for, and color takes the longest, because a glaze that looks right on a test tile can look strange on a curved surface under a living room lamp. We would rather miss a deadline than ship a pot that looks almost right.

Longwood Gardens carries Chive, and so does Brooklyn Botanic Garden, two shops staffed by people who know at a glance whether a pot was made for a living plant. Exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show since 2013; twice awarded the 5-star booth award — only two are given each year. Chive ships to 40+ countries and has never sold to a big-box retailer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Virago Large a good large indoor pot for floor plants?

The Virago Large is a good large indoor pot for floor plants because its porcelain body is heavy enough to keep tall plants upright. The 10 inch size suits most floor plants sold for living rooms, while the 6 to 8 inch sizes suit larger tabletop plants. A center drainage hole and detachable saucer handle watering without marking the floor.

Is the saucer included with the Virago Large?

Yes, the Virago Large comes with a matching detachable saucer, so it arrives as a complete pot and saucer set. The saucer catches the water that drains through and keeps floors and furniture free of rings. Because both pieces share the same matte finish, the Virago Large reads as a single object rather than a pot sitting on a mismatched tray.

Which Virago Large size do I need for my plant?

Pick the Virago Large size one step wider than your plant's current nursery pot. The Large comes in 6, 7, 8 and 10 inch sizes, each as tall as it is wide. Going much larger leaves extra soil that stays wet too long. When in doubt between two sizes, measure the nursery pot across the top and size up by an inch or two.

Can the Virago Large work as a bird of paradise pot?

The Virago Large works well as a bird of paradise pot for young and mid-sized plants, since its weight steadies the tall, fanning leaves. Most indoor bird of paradise plants will suit the 10 inch size. They like evenly moist soil, so the drainage hole and saucer let you water thoroughly without leaving the roots sitting in water.

Does the Virago Large make a good apartment warming gift?

The Virago Large makes a thoughtful apartment warming gift because it gives a new place its first proper plant without taking over the room. The detachable saucer protects rental floors and windowsills, and the five colors suit the neutral walls most apartments come with. It is a practical present that will move with them to the next place, and the one after.

Why choose a porcelain pot for a large plant?

A porcelain pot is a strong choice for a large plant because porcelain is fired harder and denser than standard ceramic. That density makes the Virago Large heavy enough to keep a tall plant steady, and it helps the matte finish resist chips over years of use. The glazed surface also wipes clean, which matters on a pot that sits at floor level.

Will the Virago Large tip over with a tall plant?

The Virago Large is unlikely to tip over with a tall plant, because porcelain is heavy and the pot is as wide as it is tall. That balance keeps the center of gravity low even when leaves spread well beyond the rim. For very tall plants, choose the 10 inch size and rotate the plant now and then so it grows evenly rather than leaning toward the light.

Is the Virago Large one of the more unique gardening gifts?

The Virago Large is one of the more unique gardening gifts because it is a Chive design you will not find in big-box stores. Its textured porcelain and matte colors look considered rather than generic, and it is practical for anyone growing plants indoors. It needs no assembly, batteries or instructions. Most gardening gifts cannot make all three claims.

Shido Vegetable and Flower Seeds Vacuum sealed for peak freshness

The pot is sorted. Now what goes in it?

Shido seeds come vacuum-sealed, non-GMO, and packaged well enough that people keep the packets after the seeds are gone. Which is either a design success or a problem, depending on how you look at it.

Your new pot is waiting.
