The Virago Large Style I is a matte porcelain plant pot sized for statement plants, with a center drainage hole and a detachable saucer. The Virago line began in white because Chive was tired of watching color get ignored, and the white promptly became the bestseller. Color came anyway. Style I is available in White, Black, Blue Grey, Olive and Soft Pink.

Style I is the third textured pattern in the Large, and it comes in 6, 7, 8 and 10 inch sizes, each roughly as tall as it is wide. It suits a ZZ plant, a dracaena, a mature pothos trained up a pole or a rubber plant heading for the ceiling. Porcelain this dense is heavy by design, so the pot stays put when the plant gets ambitious. Water drains through the center and lands in the saucer, not on the floor.

Potting Tips

  1. Repot in the evening.
  2. Wait 1–2 days after watering, then repot.
  3. Buy potting mix. Not backyard dirt.
  4. Move the top layer of soil from the old pot into the new one. It's a little ecosystem.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger.
  6. Soil line sits an inch below the rim. Leca or small rocks at the bottom for drainage.

Pot Care instructions
  1. Dishwasher-safe. Can also be hand-washed with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
  2. Glazed pots are dipped and fired in the kiln — they are sealed, durable, and not looking for trouble. No special cleaning products required.
  3. For pots with saucers empty the saucer periodically. Standing water in the saucer defeats the purpose of having a drainage hole, which is a thing we feel strongly about.
  4. Not frost-safe. Designed for indoor use and covered outdoor temperate weather use. Freezing temperatures are not recommended.

Virago 3.5" Porcelain Pot With Drainage Hole And Saucer - Chive Ceramics Studio - Pots - Chive Ceramics Studio

The Biggest Virago, Built for the Biggest Plants

Every Virago size exists because customers asked for it, and the Large exists because they asked loudly. We designed it in 2022, years after the smaller pots had turned a protest against boring white into our most popular white pot. Somewhere in there is a lesson about marketing. We have chosen not to learn it.

A large plant needs a pot that will not flinch. At 6 to 10 inches, the Large holds enough soil for a plant with real height, and porcelain gives it the weight to keep that plant upright when a dog, a vacuum or a guest gets too close. Style I carries the third of the Large's textured patterns, a surface that gives the matte color some shadow without turning the pot into the main event. The plant is the main event. The pot is there to make it look like you planned this.

Underneath, the center drainage hole does the quiet work, and the saucer collects whatever comes through. Large pots hold water longer than small ones, so drainage matters more as size goes up, not less. We sized the hole to let water out without losing soil, then tested it until we stopped worrying. That took longer than anyone budgeted. It usually does.

Potting a plant with Chive

  1. It's best to repot your plant in the evening. Trust us, we know.
  2. Repot 1–2 days after watering — keeps the same rhythm going and won't shock it.
  3. Potting soil is not the dirt from your backyard. Go buy good, nutrient-rich soil.
  4. The top layer of soil in your current pot should be the top layer in the new pot too. It's a little ecosystem your plant likes.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger than your existing pot. "It'll grow into it" is not correct, and you will kill it.
  6. Keep the soil line about an inch below the top of the pot. Add some leca or small rocks to the bottom for better aeration.

The Ultimate Repotting Guide

For those who have killed a plant. Or several. Or, frankly, many.

Before you put a plant into your new pot, you have to get it out of the nursery pot — a process that ends badly more often than any gardening influencer will admit. We wrote a full guide: when to repot (early spring, and not when you're feeling impulsive in October), which soil to use, how to tell your plant is root-bound, and how to avoid the three mistakes that kill perfectly healthy plants within a week of a well-intentioned repotting.

Indoor Plant Pots That Drain Properly

Every pot in the drainage collection follows the same rule as the Virago Large: water goes out the bottom, not into the roots. Browse the rest when the next plant arrives.

Pots with drainage by chive studio

Stocked at the Huntington and Longwood Gardens

Chive Studio has designed ceramics in Toronto since 2004, and every pot in the range still begins as a pencil sketch. Shapes are drawn, argued over, made, lived with and revised, which is a slow way to build a catalog and the only way we know to make something worth keeping. The large sizes always take longest. Every flaw grows with the pot.

The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens stocks Chive, as does Longwood Gardens, and both shops know the difference between a pot made for plants and one made for photographs. Exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show since 2013; twice awarded the 5-star booth award — only two are given each year. Chive ships to 40+ countries and has never sold to a big-box retailer.

Frequently asked questions

What plants suit the Virago Large Style I?

The Virago Large Style I suits most indoor plants with real height or spread, including ZZ plants, dracaenas, rubber plants, snake plants and pothos trained up a pole. As a large indoor pot in 6, 7, 8 and 10 inch sizes, it covers everything from a big tabletop plant to a floor plant. Choose by the size of the nursery pot, not the leaves.

Does the Virago Large porcelain pot have a drainage hole?

Yes, the Virago Large porcelain pot has a drainage hole in the center of its base, paired with a detachable saucer. Water the soil cannot hold drains straight through, so roots never sit in a pool at the bottom of the pot. That matters more in large pots, which hold more soil and dry out more slowly than small ones.

How big is the Virago Large Style I?

The Virago Large Style I comes in four sizes: 6, 7, 8 and 10 inches in diameter, each about as tall as it is wide. The smaller sizes suit larger tabletop plants, and the 10 inch size suits most floor plants. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger. Plants grow, and pots rarely shrink to keep up.

Is the Virago Large a good ZZ plant pot?

The Virago Large is a good ZZ plant pot because ZZ plants store water in their thick rhizomes and need soil that drains well. The center drainage hole keeps those roots from staying wet, and the heavy porcelain steadies the tall, upright stems. Most mature ZZ plants suit the 8 or 10 inch size, with room for a few years of slow growth.

Is the Virago Large a good gift for a plant lover?

The Virago Large is a good gift for a plant lover because most of them have at least one plant that has outgrown its pot. It arrives with its own saucer, comes in five matte colors and suits almost any room. A gift that solves a real problem gets used every day. That is rarer than it should be, and it tends to be noticed.

How do I clean a matte porcelain plant pot?

To clean a matte porcelain plant pot like the Virago Large, wipe it with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then dry it. The glazed surface does not absorb water, so soil marks and drips come off easily. Avoid abrasive pads, which can polish matte finishes unevenly. Empty and rinse the saucer now and then to keep it fresh.

When should I repot into the Virago Large?

Repot into the Virago Large when roots start circling the nursery pot or growing out of its drainage holes, usually in spring or early summer. Choose the size one step up from the current pot, loosen the root ball gently and use fresh potting mix. Water thoroughly afterwards and let the excess drain into the saucer before emptying it.

Is the Virago Large a good housewarming present?

The Virago Large is a good housewarming present because a new home almost always has a bare corner and a plant that needs somewhere better to live. It comes as a pot and saucer set in five colors, so it suits most interiors without guesswork. It is practical, it lasts and it will be in use long after the boxes are unpacked.

Shido Vegetable and Flower Seeds Vacuum sealed for peak freshness

The pot is sorted. Now what goes in it?

Shido seeds come vacuum-sealed, non-GMO, and packaged well enough that people keep the packets after the seeds are gone. Which is either a design success or a problem, depending on how you look at it.

Your new pot is waiting.
