There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The VW Green Van Ornament is the vehicle that has been parked at every farmers market and trailhead since 1967, rendered in blown glass with green panels painted on and chrome accents lined in by hand, a cord at the top sized for a standard limb. The green van finds the gathering before it becomes a crowd. My cousin Jess bought one in college and drove it to a music festival nobody had heard of yet. The festival is famous now. Jess sold the van in 2009, which she considers a mistake she raises at Thanksgiving with a regularity that has become its own annual tradition. Her children have heard the story enough times to recite it, but they will never need to because Jess will tell it again unprompted and with the same conviction she brought to the original trip. This ornament captures the quality of arriving first. The Royal Ontario Museum catalogs objects that defined entire generations; some of those objects had wheels and windshields.

The Story Behind This Ornament

The green VW van has been parked at every farmers market and every music festival and every trailhead parking lot since 1967 and has never once looked out of place in any of those locations because it belongs wherever something good is happening. My cousin Jess bought one in college with money she had saved from three summers of waitressing and drove it to a music festival nobody had heard of yet. The festival is famous now. Jess sold the van in 2009, which she considers the defining mistake of her adult life and discusses at Thanksgiving with a regularity that has made it its own holiday tradition. Her children, who were not born when the van existed, have heard the story so many times they can recite the route from memory. They know the mile marker where the transmission made the noise. They know the campsite number. They know that Jess cried when she drove away from the buyer's house and again six months later when she saw another green van on the highway and again at Thanksgiving when she told the story for the fourth time. She does not need the van anymore. She needs the story of the van, and the story is enough. This ornament gives it a place on the tree.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ornaments Are a Great Gift. We Have Opinions About the Rest.

More Travel Christmas Ornaments

Our Travel collection maps the places people carry with them — lighthouses, landmarks, and coastlines — in hand-painted glass. The Trolly Ornament maps a hillside route that even the van never attempted.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. The VW Green Van rewards that same distance with panel colors that shift subtly as the tree lights move. See more of the Travel Christmas Ornaments collection parked along the same branch.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

The VW Green Van ornament arrives on the tree once a year. For the walls, Chive's Ceramic Flowers arrive permanently: porcelain blooms shaped by hand, mounted flat, holding pigment year after year without asking anything of their owner beyond a nail and a surface. Both lines exist because we believe handmade objects carry a weight that mass-produced alternatives cannot replicate, no matter how close the photographs make them look.

About Chive Studio

Chive showed up early. The studio opened in 2004 when handmade ornaments were a niche most retailers had not noticed, and we have been here since, blowing glass and painting it by hand and shipping ornaments that reward the kind of inspection most holiday decorations are not built to survive. Our artisans shape each piece from gathered glass, paint the details that make a green van a green van and not merely a green shape, and attach the loop that sends it to the tree. Jess found the festival before it was famous. We found the ornament market before it was crowded. The parallel is not accidental, and we have never pretended otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

Do you make a VW Green Van ornament in blown glass?

We make exactly that. The VW Green Van Ornament is blown glass with green panels and chrome accents painted on by hand, finished with a cord at the top for hanging from the branch. It captures the van that has been parked at every farmers market and trailhead since 1967 and has never once looked out of place. Jess would have recognized it across a parking lot.

Would the VW Green Van ornament make a great secret santa pick?

A VW Green Van Ornament at a secret santa exchange is the gift that tells whoever opens it that you brought something worth stealing, which is the highest ambition any secret santa participant can hold. Blown glass, hand-painted panels, the rounded silhouette of a vehicle that belongs wherever something good is happening. Jess says the best gifts arrive before anyone expects them.

Who would enjoy getting the VW Green Van ornament?

The person who shows up early. The friend who found the restaurant before the review. The relative who brings a dish nobody asked for and it becomes the one everybody talks about. If someone in your life has a quality of arriving that improves wherever they land, this ornament is for them. It captures the vehicle that carried people like that since 1967.

Is the VW Green Van ornament real glass?

The VW Green Van Ornament is real glass, blown from gathered material at the bench and painted by hand once cooled. The green panels, chrome accents, and window outlines are applied with brushes, one layer at a time. Glass has a weight and a transparency that synthetic materials do not reproduce. You feel it the moment light passes through.

How tall is the VW Green Van christmas tree ornament?

The VW Green Van Ornament measures 3.31 inches long, 1.42 inches wide, and 1.89 inches tall, compact enough to share a branch and detailed enough to hold attention from a few feet away. The painted chrome line catches tree lights at an angle that makes the van look like it is about to pull away from the curb. Jess says that checks out.

How should I store the VW Green Van ornament?

Wrap it in tissue or soft cloth, place it in a rigid compartment, and store the container somewhere dry and stable. The painted chrome accents are the finest detail and benefit from padding that prevents anything from pressing against them during storage. This version only requires a box, some tissue, and a shelf away from heat. Jess stored her actual van in a garage.

What pairs well with the VW Green Van ornament?

The VW Green Van Ornament pairs naturally with the rest of the Travel Christmas Ornaments collection, where every piece maps a vehicle or landmark that people carry with them. A green van next to a red van next to a trolley creates a branch that looks like a road trip curated by someone who was paying attention.

Does the VW Green Van ornament arrive gift boxed?

The VW Green Van Ornament does not arrive in a gift box. It ships in protective packaging that prioritizes safe delivery of blown glass over presentation, which is the correct priority when breakable objects are involved. If gifting it, you handle the wrapping, which Jess would say is the fun part. She once wrapped a van key in seven layers of paper for fun.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
