There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The VW Red Van Ornament is the van that committed to being seen, reproduced in blown glass with the paint job that was never going to be mistaken for anything quieter. Windows and chrome are trimmed in by brush, a silver hook at the roofline for the tree. The red van said visibility out loud. Whoever drove it made a choice that was not about attention but about honesty — being exactly as present as they were, in a color that announced their arrival before they appeared around the corner. My aunt Pauline had a red van in 1974 and she drove it to a beach in Oregon and when people asked about the trip she said the van was the trip and left it there. Some journeys do not require a postcard. They require the right ornament, and this is the right ornament. The Royal Ontario Museum preserves vehicles that defined entire decades; this one hangs from a branch instead.

The Story Behind This Ornament

The red VW van committed to being noticed in a way that the standard van in its more modest finishes was somewhat ambivalent about. It moved through landscapes that were already beautiful and added itself to them without apology, in a shade of red that was never going to blend in and was never trying to. My aunt Pauline drove one in 1974. She drove it to a beach in Oregon that did not have a name anyone used and she parked it facing the water and sat on the roof and watched the Pacific until the sun went down and then she drove home and when people asked about the trip she said the van was the trip, which was not an evasion. She meant the driving. The hours on the coast highway with the windows open and the engine doing its particular thing at its particular volume and the color of the van in the side mirrors, which was the same color as the confidence she felt behind the wheel. Pauline sold the van eventually. She has never bought a red car since, not because she stopped liking red but because she said the van used it all up. There was a finite amount of red available to her and the van consumed it, happily and completely.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. The VW Red Van commands that distance with chrome trim and window outlines that reward a second glance from any angle. The full Travel Christmas Ornaments collection rewards the same kind of look.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

The VW Red Van ornament brings one season of color to the tree. For year-round color on the walls, Chive's Ceramic Flowers are porcelain blooms shaped at the bench, mounted flat, holding their pigment indefinitely and needing nothing from their owner except the decision to hang them. The ornament line and the flower line share a single conviction: handmade objects earn a kind of attention that factory pieces simply do not.

About Chive Studio

Chive launched in 2004 believing that handmade objects carry a different weight than anything stamped from a production line. The ornaments arrived after the ceramic flowers and proved the belief correct at tree-branch scale. Every piece is blown by mouth, painted by hand, and capped with the hardware for hanging where it belongs. We produce in batches at the pace the glass demands, which is the only pace that results in detail you can see from across the room and confirm at arm's length. Pauline's van was built at a factory, but people remember it for the color, which was a deliberate choice. Our ornaments are that same kind of choice.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a VW Red Van christmas ornament?

We do. The VW Red Van Ornament is the iconic van reproduced in blown glass with brush-painted windows and chrome trim, a silver hook at the roofline for hanging. It captures the vehicle that committed to being seen in a shade of red that was never going to be mistaken for anything quieter. Pauline would recognize it immediately and without hesitation.

Is the VW Red Van ornament a good stocking stuffer?

A VW Red Van Ornament fits inside a stocking and looks better than anything else you could put in there, which is the definition of a stocking stuffer that over-delivers. Blown glass, painted by hand, shaped like a vehicle that defined a generation. The recipient pulls it out, sees the red, and understands immediately. Someone was paying attention to what they care about.

Who should I buy the VW Red Van ornament for?

Buy it for the road-trip person. The one who considers the drive part of the destination. The friend who owns a vinyl collection and a floor lamp from 1971 and describes their aesthetic as arrived at rather than purchased. If someone in your life has ever said the journey is the point, this ornament was made for them.

How is the VW Red Van glass ornament actually made?

An artisan gathers molten glass, shapes the van body by breath and hand tools at the bench, and sets it aside to cool. A painter then applies the red body, window outlines, and chrome accents using fine brushes. A silver hook is attached at the roofline for hanging. The entire process is done by hand in a studio. Pauline's van differed, but the color was exactly right.

What are the dimensions of the VW Red Van ornament?

The VW Red Van Ornament measures 4.33 inches long, 1.85 inches wide, and 2.64 inches tall, roughly palm-sized and scaled to sit on a branch without crowding the ornaments on either side. The proportions follow the original van's silhouette closely enough that anyone who has seen one will recognize it before they read the description. Pauline says recognition is the test.

How do I clean and care for the VW Red Van ornament?

Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth after the season and before storage. Avoid water or solvents on the painted surface. Wrap it in tissue, place it in a rigid container, and store it somewhere dry and stable. The red paint is applied by hand and holds up well to normal handling. It just wasn't built for dishwashers or opinionated five-year-olds.

What travel and landmark ornaments pair well with the VW Red Van?

The VW Red Van pairs naturally with the full Travel Christmas Ornaments collection, which includes buses, vans, lighthouses, and landmarks in blown glass. A red van next to a green van next to a London bus creates the kind of miniature road trip. That's a branch that feels like an itinerary, assembled with intention.

Does the VW Red Van ornament ship in protective gift packaging?

The VW Red Van Ornament ships in protective packaging engineered for safe transit, not in a presentation gift box. The packaging absorbs shock and keeps the glass intact from our studio to your door. If you are sending it as a gift, you handle the wrapping. Pauline would say that's the better arrangement.
